Traditional leaders and residents of Mgona in Lilongwe have opposed a decision by the Mgona Agro Dealers Association to bar foreign business operators from conducting business at the local Mgona Market.

The concerns emerged during a meeting held today in the area where 10 village chiefs gathered to discuss the association’s recent position. The association had called for foreign traders to suspend their operations until they comply with court directives requiring them to obtain valid business licenses. The meeting attracted a large number of residents, many of whom expressed concern over reports that some foreign traders had allegedly been intimidated with panga knives.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Village Headman Pumulani Mwamale said the traditional leaders do not support the association’s actions, arguing that the group failed to follow proper procedures and did not consult local leadership, including the area councilor, before making the decision.

Residents Chisomo Siyabu and Effie Maloya also backed the chiefs’ stance saying foreign traders play an important role in the community by providing easy access to essential goods and services. They described the traders as hardworking and beneficial to local economic activity.

In response, Mgona Agro Dealers Association Chairperson Rabson Chikoya maintained that the association’s actions are peaceful and well intentioned. He denied allegations that members had threatened or used violence against foreign business operators.

The To***co Commission says Malawi's to***co market is showing signs of improvement as rejection rates continue to decline during the 2026 marketing season.

‎According to To***co Commission's spokesperson, Telephorus chigwenembe, rejection rates for auction to***co have fallen to between 20 and 40 percent in recent weeks, compared to between 80 and 98 percent recorded at the beginning of the marketing season.

‎Chigwenembe says the development signals growing demand for auction to***co and is expected to improve market performance in the coming weeks.

‎Its seven-week market report shows that by June 5, farmers had sold 51.5 million kilograms of to***co valued at 106.8 million US dollars at an average price of 2 dollars and 8 cents per kilogram.

‎Meanwhile, the overall rejection rate for both auction and contract to***co stood at 5.2 percent as of June 5, a development that could help boost earnings for farmers as trading continues.

Nevada Pool Club has surged from sixth to second place in the Central Region Pool League (CRPL) following two impressive victories over the weekend in the league which is co-sponsored by PJ Bite Restaurant and Lions Management.

The Biwi based side began their campaign with a convincing 6-2 away victory over Red Sea Pool Club on Saturday before delivering a strong statement on Sunday with a dominant 7-1 home win against then second placed PJ Bite Pool Club.

The back to back wins have propelled Nevada to second position on the table with 29 points, six behind league leaders Members Pool Club who sit on 35 points after 14 matches. Members also enjoyed a successful weekend, recording a 5-0 away win over FIP Pool Club before defeating Old Snipers 6-2 at home in Lumbadzi.

Meanwhile, Lions Den Pool Club moved up from 4th to 3rd place after securing a 6-2 away victory against Old Snipers and a 5-3 home win over Tempo Pool Club. Lions Den now has 28 points from 14 matches. Lucio Pool Club slipped from third place after suffering a 5-3 defeat to ME Pool Club despite having registered a 5-3 home victory over Oriental Pool Club earlier in the weekend. Lucio now sits on 25 points, one behind PJ Bite Pool Club which has accumulated 26 points from 14 games.

At the lower end of the table, Red Sea Pool Club boosted their survival hopes with a 6-2 victory over fellow strugglers Bamboo Pool Club on Sunday. Bamboo's struggles continued after they had also lost 6-2 to Tempo Pool Club on Saturday. Red Sea currently occupies 17th position with 12 points while Bamboo remains rooted at the bottom with just 7points from 14 matches.

The league is being sponsored by PJ Bite Restaurant in Area 3 and Lions Den Management in Biwi, Lilongwe with a tune of K10 million.

A joint press release by the Ministry of Labour, the Employers' Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) and the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) has urged the Professional Drivers Union of Malawi (PRODUM) to pursue its concerns through legal and established labour processes after rejecting the newly gazetted minimum wage for truck drivers.

The statement follows PRODUM's demand for a 100 percent wage increase and its threat to withdraw labour from June 8, citing the high cost of living, job risks and the role truck drivers play in trade and supply chains.

The social partners said the current minimum wage remains legally binding and was determined after considering workers' welfare, economic conditions and employment levels.

They also expressed willingness to continue discussions on issues such as wage harmonisation and occupational grading.
