Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe has convicted and sentenced 42 year old Yona Mwaungulu to seven years imprisonment for forcing a seven year old girl to perform oral s*x on him.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu has told Times 360 Malawi that Mwaungulu committed the offense in May last year at Mtsiliza during the daytime, around 1:00 PM, when he encountered the victim near her house where she was selling roasted sweet potatoes.

Mwaungulu is said to have purchased K400 worth of sweet potatoes from the girl whom he then commanded her to suck his manhood, taking advantage of the lack of people nearby.

Fortunately, a passerby witnessed the act after hearing the girl's cries for help. This led to Mwaungulu's arrest and subsequent conviction today.

Mwaungulu pleaded for a lenient sentence, stating that he is a family man. However, the Magistrate proceeded to sentence him to seven years in prison, aiming to send a strong message to potential offenders.

The Women Judges Association of Malawi (Wojam) has appointed a 94 year old woman, Alice Kavwenje as a role model for girls education in the association's Nzotheka Programme.

Kavwenje who became a widow in 1982 following the death of her husband, has been appointed for her bravery in raising and training her eleven children up to tertiary education on her own.

Wojam trustee Ivy Kamanga, a Judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal told Times 360 Malawi that Kavwenje's story showcases the possibility of women standing firm to raise their children on their own.

According to Kamanga, the association intends to document Kavwenje's story so that it can be used in empowering children and women.

Kavwenje of Kwendakwina village, Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntchisi district said she managed to train her children through proceeds of farming as she wanted them to be self reliant.

"I am always proud to see my children standing on their own. This is what I wanted, they are even supporting me on a daily basis," she said.
