Official page of the radio station 97Minivan.
97 Minivan is the first independent radio station in the Maldives. Bringing your favorite shows such as Kal Dho Bajey by Susan Ibrahim, 97Minivan aims to provide the people with a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of life in Maldives. The word Minivan in Dhivehi, the national language in the Maldive Islands, means “Independent”.
Minivan Radio, during its brief life span, maintained offices in several different countries, including England & Sri Lanka, and also in Male', Maldives. The first broadcast from Minivan Radio was on August 25th 2004 and the brodacast was sent from Germany to listeners across the world through shortwave. Minivan Radio was the first radio station that was in opposition to the government in Maldives during this era. Because of this it faced many obstacles, the first of which being that it was broadcast from across the world instead of in Maldives. In the 2004 Tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean, minivan radio was essential in informing people in islands in Maldives of what was going on and ensuring peoples safety. On January 1st 2006 Minivan's Sri Lanka office had been raided and the broadcast had to temporarily stop, however it started again shortly afterwards. Minivan Radio finally ended in 2008 after the presidential election that brought in the first democratically elected government in Maldives.
97Minivan started shortly after the event's of February 7th 2012 as we felt that the people once again needed a station that will give Maldivian's updates and explanations of the political situation in Maldives and what is going on. However, this time round it is not a station that is exclusively politics based, we also aim to bring you the lastest songs from around the world as well as golden classics from the years gone by.
