Discover Huvadhu

Welcome to Laabadhoo! Famously known among Huvadhuans as Hathe-fate-Laabadhoo ( ހަތެފަޓެ ލާބަދޫ)- literally translates to "island with seven folds" is another gem and now a protected area in South Huvadhu. The island contains many ponds with unique flora and fauna. According to the locals, these ponds were once safety net for islanders when the weather gets rough, and fishing was poor. Hence these ponds played a vital role in food security of islanders. These ponds inhabit a fish which lives in both freshwater and saltwater called Milkfish- ބޭންގު (Chanos chanos).

The seniors tell the story of catching these fish from the ponds in Laabadhoo for protein when fishing was poor. They use red sail used in traditional sail vessel and spread it on the pond. The fish jumps on the net resulting easy and good yield. The catch of milkfish then gets distributed among the fishers and participants.

From our observations, the bays in the Laabadhoo are excellent ground to do water sports activities such as kite surfing in both monsoons . We hope these spots and locations will be utilised non-destructive way in the future for the prosperity of islanders nearby and all the Maldivians. The mangroves are quite extensive with varieties of true mangrove and mangrove associated species. The shallow bay is nursery ground for many marine organisms such as turtles, sharks, rays and fish species.

Keep following our handles for more interesting facts and stories from various parts of Huvadhu.

Now, raise your hands if you want to visit Laabadhoo and nearby amazing locations. How a barbecued Milkfish and breadfruit rice sounds for Lunch?

Jummah Mubarak to you all! Stay home, stay safe!

1. It is the last island to the south of Farebithu.
2. It has beautiful mangrove with pond.
3. It has hau (ހައު) which is the basic material to weave thundu kunaa (ތުނޑު ކުނާ), traditional met. Most of met weavers obtain raw material from this island.

In Huvadhu Gorgeous Oceanic beings come to greet those who swim and dive into finding them 💙. The mating pairs of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas - ވެލާ) + a witnessing individual, locals refer as (hekiveri velaa- ހެކިވެރިޔާ) are common in the inner atoll of Huvadhu all year round. There are spots in Huvadhu which is nearly confident of meeting a feathery friend like this these.

We met these two greens, one a mature adult male and juvenile male(lookout for the very long tail for adult male and short tail for the juvenile). They take about 15-50 years to reach maturity.

Their primary diet consists of seagrass, algae and jellyfish.

Highlights from yesterday's dives to channels of eastern Huvadhu from Dhaandhoo to Kooddoo channels.

Our team observed diverse marine life including turtles, rays, groupers, Napoleon wrasse, sharks, and some trash of human origin. We need proper waste management practices atoll wise and awareness to preserve these beautiful marine ecosystems.

The good news is, compared to other parts of the Maldives anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems in Huvadhu are low.

Discover Huvadhu divers today observed this beautiful coral garden during dive to channel between Thinadhoo and Kolamafushi. The centre of the frame is an Alcyonacea or commonly known as gorgonian.
The natural beauty of the marine ecosystem needs to be preserved by each and every one of us. As a dealer and supper of marine equipment, our love for this natural beauty is endless. Bravo to the Discover Huvadhu team for putting such a great effort in recording such important data for the greater cause of protecting our environment.

We captured this rare sight of Crinoid, famously referred to as sea Lilly aka feather star moving to find a suitable spot to sit. Our videographer from Raajje Divers captured this shot. Sea lilies are closely related to sea cucumber, sea urchins, starfish and brittle stars. What a lovely sight!

"Iloshi meshun", Making The Traditional ekel broom of Maldives "iloshi fathi" -

The traditional ekel broom of the Maldives is produced from the thin, smooth, flexible, ekel (‘’iloshi’’) of coconut palm fronds. The leaves or fronds of the palm tree crown the top of the tree. Ekel is the leaf stalk (midrib) of the leaflets that are found attached to the spine (rachis) of palm fronds. To make the ekel broom, green fronds from the coconut palm is harvested or the mature fronds that have fallen off are used. These fronds are stripped to their spines by using a knife called ‘’kathivalhi’’ (a knife that resembles a machete but with a broader blade) which is made by Maldivian blacksmiths. This separates the hundreds of leaflets attached to the rachis of palm fronds. The leaflets from two fronds are collected, bundled and used to make the ekel broom. A sharp knife or ‘’fiyohi’’ is used to run along the leaf stalk, approximately, 5 cm above the base of leaflet to shave off the leafy part, separating the woody midribs (eekel). The eekel now looks like an arrow with fletching. This is done in order to save time and expedite the process. The remaining 5 cm is then shaved off leaving the ekel bare. The knife is run again, once or twice, along the length of the ekel to shave off any remaining leafy parts and to smoothen it out. The ekels are then gathered and tied together, 8 to 10 cm from the base of the bundle, by coir rope or string.

In the hands of experienced people, the entire length of the eekel can be removed from the leaflet. But in the hands of an inexperienced person, it is very easy to nick the ekel along its thinner end during the shaving process.

A snippet from the documentary
Coming soon...

A snippet from our upcoming nature-based documentary series on Huvadhu atoll, . We often find birds been held captive as pets despite being illegal. A bird held captive flew from its captivity to natural home only to get stuck. I was in the right place at the right time to save this beautiful black noddy. We should learn to keep the natural life as it is. Only take photographs and only leave footsteps. On this environment day, let all remember that it is time for nature.
