Cabinet has agreed to the Mauritius Kestrel (𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) being declared as the National Bird of the Republic of Mauritius. The Mauritius Kestrel is an endemic species unique to Mauritius. In the early 1980s, the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, in collaboration with the Government and international conservation organisations, took up the challenge to rescue the Kestrels from extinction.

The current wild population of Kestrels stands at 350 individuals. The rescue of the Mauritius Kestrel is one of the greatest conservation success stories not only in Mauritius but also in the world. The Mauritius Kestrel would be declared ‘the National Bird of Mauritius’ on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the accession of Mauritius to the status of Republic in March 2022.

💦 To all Sea users around the island!

𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽...

We recently received reports of highly COTs (Crown of Thorns - Acanthaster) infested sites in Trou aux biches with more than 80 COTs observed in one dive! If you also observe this phenomenon, let us know and help us set a priority list of infested sites around Mauritius, urgently needing control.

If you have observed COTs recently, you may :

👇🏼

- Fill this google form data sheet:
https://bit.ly/3I7yafD

- Send pictures or videos to [email protected] OR [email protected] with all relevant details pertaining to the site and number of COTs observed.

👀 We really need evidence!

‼️ 3 things to know about COTs or Crown of Thorns- Acanthaster SP:

👉🏼 A large, multi-armed coral eating starfish.
👉🏼 The most well known biological threats to coral reefs.
👉🏼 An outbreak of COTs can reduce the live coral cover by 90% + severely cause harm to reef-associated species (reef fishes and benthic communities).

Will our goverment take action or monitor or do nothing?

The UK has said the variant found in South Africa has a spike protein that was dramatically different to the one in the original coronavirus that Covid-19 vaccines are based on.
