Today in Aviation: 22.02.1993 First Flight McDonnell Douglas MD-90

The MD-90 was an attempt to update the MD-80 and keep it competitive against the rival Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320. With a stretched fuselage and more fuel-efficient IAE V2500 high-bypass turbofans, and the EFIS cockpit already used on the MD-88, the first MD-90 was delivered to Delta in 1995.

A shorter version, the MD-95 as also developed. This would survive the Boeing merger and would be renamed the 717.

Neither were a great success, with their 5-abreast seating configuration making them already less competitive, and with Boeing taking over the programme, there was no real motivation to push the aircraft when the company was already building a best-selling competitor. However, the type remains remembered as one of the last incarnations of the popular DC-9 family of airliners.

The Sukhoi Su-25 Grach is a subsonic, single-seat, twin-engine close air-support aircraft aircraft developed in the Soviet Union by Sukhoi. A number of variants were built, including a navalised version for service aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov, and the aircraft was widely exported, and has seen action in a number of conflicts.

Airbus has attained Type Certification for the Airbus A321XLR powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, after the CFM LEAP-1A powered A321XLR was certified in July 2024. This certification allows customers who ordered P&W-powered A321XLRs to start receiving their aircraft.

The first A321XLR flew in June 2022. After an extensive test programme involving three test aircraft, the aircraft entered service in 2024.

Today in aviation: 22.02.1987 First Flight Airbus A320

When Airbus created the A320, it raised the bar for narrow-body airliners, and introduced new technologies previously unseen on airliners, most importantly fly-by-wire controls, glass cockpit and side-stick controls.

The aircraft has cemented Airbus's position as a major airliner manufacturer and continues to vie with the 737 for the accolade of the most widely-produced airliner.

Today in Aviation: 21.02.1945 - First Flight Hawker Sea Fury

A navalised version of the Hawker Fury, the Sea Fury represented the pinnacle of the piston-engined fighter. Powered by the Bristol Centaurus engine and armed with four wing-mounted Hispano V cannon, the Sea Fury FB.11 was a fighter-bomber, which saw action in the Korean War, and one even managed a MiG-15 kill.

Nowadays the aircraft remains a popular warbird and racing aircraft.

With the arrival of the first VIP Global 5000, the Slovak Government Flying Service has retired one of its two Fokker 100s, OM-BYC, on February 11th. The aircraft is being stored at Bratislava and will be used for spares recovery to keep its sister-ship OM-BYB flying.

The grounding of OM-BYC brings the number of flying airworthy Fokker 100s in Europe three - one being the other Slovak Government machine and the others being F-ZAFT and F-ZASN of the French Air Force's FLight Test Centre..

Air Greenland has signed an agreement with leasing company Carlyle to lease an A320neo aircraft, which is scheduled to join the 2027 summer schedule. The lease agreement runs for six years with an option to extend and gives Air Greenland the flexibility to operate the new route between Ilulissat and Copenhagen, while further complementing the A330neo.

The aircraft will be delivered in December 2026 and will then be adapted to Greenlandic conditions. It is expected to enter service in spring 2027, just in time for the first peak season at North Greenland's new airport, which is expected to open in late 2026 with a 2,200 metre runway. The A320neo will support the increased capacity made possible by the new international airport.

The Museum Complex in Upper Pyshma, Russia, has acquired what appears to be a Junkers Ju-87G-2 'Kanonenvogel', an anti-tank variant of the Stuka dive-bomber used on the Eastern Front. The aircraft is said to have originated from Austria and Germany, and is understood to be a hybrid replica aircraft with a number of parts originating from wrecks.

The aircraft was reportedly smuggled into Russia via Kyrgyzstan in order to circumvent sanctions currently imposed on Russia.

Today in Aviation: 19.02.2002 - First Flight Embraer EMB-170

The EMB-170 was the first of the larger Embraer E-Jet family short- to medium-range, twin-engined jet regional airliners designed and produced by Embraer.

The first E170 was delivered to LOT Polish Airlines in 2004, and the larger E175, E190 and E195 were introduced over time.

The E-Jet achieved commercial success, by providing jet travel even on lower-demand routes, allowing airlines to provide a more consistent offering even on feeder regional routes.

Today in Aviation: 19.02.1982 - First Flight Boeing 757

The Boeing 757 was a narrow-body airliner designed in parallel with the wide-body 767, mainly to replace the 727. 1,050 were built before production ended in October 2004, as the 737 continued to be stretched to the point that it was competing with the 757 for capacity.

Most 757s still in service are freighters, although there are some also in use as bizjets, where the aircraft's fantastic performance really shines.

A New Zealand SH-2G Super Seasprite has successfully fired a Penguin missile for the first time, as part of workups for HMNZS Te Kaha (F77)’s deployment to the Arabian Gulf to participate in Combined Task Force 150 (CTF150). Penguin-armed Seasprites are very significant for New Zealand since its two Anzac-class frigates are not armed with anti-ship missiles.

Five Seasprites remain operational with the RNZAF fleet, and are scheduled to be replaced by new maritime combat helicopters in time for their planned withdrawal from service in 2028.

The world’s only airworthy Douglas A-20G Havoc, N747HS, was substantially damaged when it was involved an accident during the WBCA Air Show at Laredo International Airport, Texas.

The sole pilot onboard sustained serious injuries.

Preliminary information suggests the 1943-vintage aircraft suffered a "mechanical issue", possibly an engine fire, and was forced to land outside of the airport.

It appears that the aircraft had conducted a lowpass over runway 36L and was climbing out when it conducted a left turn followed by an orbit and landed in an open field north of the airport. Post-accident photos show that the airplane came to rest upright and intact, but sustained substantial damage.

17/02/2025

Australian firm Stralis is developing a hydrogen-electric powerplant to create a retro-fit conversion for the Beechcraft Bonanza. This system, it claims, will have 50% less operating costs compared to a traditionally-powered aircraft.

The powerplant has already been tested on a ground-based test-bed aircraft, and first flight of a similarly-configured Bonanza is expected in late 2025.

The company is also working on a conversion kit for the Beech 1900D while also developing the clean sheet SA-1, a 50-seat twin-motor aircraft.
