Happy Birthday, Max Planck!

This German physicist and Nobel laureate was born in 1858. He is famous for his part in developing quantum theory, one of the most spectacular breakthroughs of 20th Century physics.

Quantum theory explains the behaviour of energy and matter at the atomic and subatomic level. In coming up with this theory, Planck studied the relationship between energy and how it fits into a spectrum of radiation. He suggested that energy has distinct values. These values help scientists account for the differences in how energy behaves, which is not always consistent with classical physics theories. His theory won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 "in recognition of the services he rendered to the advancement of Physics by his discovery of energy quanta".
