Myanmar's ruling party led by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has captured much more seats than it needs to retain power, according to official results of Sunday's general election. The party so far Friday evening secured 396 seats while it needed only 322 to retain majority in the over 600 seats bicameral parliament, of which 25% are reserved for military appointees. The military-backed main opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party has so far won a meager 30 seats, while ethnic minority parties have got 47, according to the commission.

The IFJ said: “Access for media workers is critical, especially during a health crisis and in the lead up to an election. Journalists are frontline workers in gathering information that may save lives and help mitigate the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. IFJ urges the authorities to ensure the free movement for journalists so that they can work freely and ensure that authorities are accountable during an election campaign.”

Foreign reporters are unlikely to cover the run-up to Myanmar’s general elections in November because of COVID-19 restrictions.

However - “The FCCM understands that the relevant ministries will coordinate with the UEC to ensure a prioritised process for foreign journalists, if and when they apply for an entry visa at respective Myanmar embassies for the election coverage.

The Foreign Correspondents Club of Myanmar has noted that the latest “Stay at Home” restriction order for Yangon Region dated September 20, issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports, doesn’t include media coverage operations in the list of exempted activities.

Myanmar is currently facing a serious second wave of COVID-19 pandemic while the country gears up for the 2020 General Election set for November 8.

Amid this background, rumors and fake news on social media have been gaining momentum among the public, thus becoming a powerful setting for exploitation and abuse by the perpetrators.

Under such circumstances, FCCM believes that it is of utmost importance the news media be able to perform its professional duties, including news coverage activities, to be able to deliver correct information to the public and the international community, in an accurate and timely manner.

The FCCM has sent a letter signed by its chairman, to the chair of the National Level Central Committee for Prevention, Control and Treatment of COVID-19, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, demanding to include media coverage operations in the list of exempted activities from the latest “Stay at Home” order for Yangon.
