While her win was well-deserved, hosting the event in her home country might have added extra attention and support.

𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 | Martina Thorogood was crowned Miss Venezuela 1999 and represented her country at Miss World, where she placed as 1st runner-up.

Martina faced a double whammy from her national director, Osmel Sousa, who initially decided to send her to Miss World to gain more experience for Miss Universe. However, he later created a separate pageant to select a different Venezuelan representative to compete in Cyprus.

What is certain is that Martina wanted to compete in Miss Universe more than in Miss World.

Martina personally went to the Miss Universe offices in New York to inquire about why she was not accepted into the competition, as she did not have any signed contract with Miss World. There, she was informed that Miss Universe had no objection to her participation. Instead, the decision ultimately rested with the National Directors, who had the authority to select and send their candidates. Notably, numerous Miss World finalists had previously competed in Miss Universe without any issues.

It is also true that several National Directors, including Mexico’s Lupita Jones, strongly opposed Martina’s potential participation in Miss Universe, arguing that she would have an unfair advantage as the 1st runner-up at Miss World.
