Mieruba -ML

Mieruba -ML We are an independent label dedicated to Malian folk and blues, based in Ségou, Mali. We record, edit, package and distribute original music by Malian artists.
(67)

We are an independent record label and a music production house, dedicated to the Folk and Blues of Mali. Mieruba was established in the ancient city of Ségou in 2010 and we are still based here. As an independent label, we make original music productions available to the general public under our own brand name, be they audio recordings or video clips. We do this, because we consider it our respon

sibility to preserve and promote Mali’s rich cultural and musical heritage and make new artistic discoveries. Between 2010 and 2018, Mieruba issued a series of eight albums, as part of its project The Lost Maestros. Almost all of the music was recorded here in Ségou. We are running a number of projects, alongside The Lost Maestros; we will present these shortly. Mali, our country, has earned worldwide fame for its art, especially its high-quality musical productions. We are considered Africa’s premier musical exporter. But in spite of all this artistic wealth, most of Mali’s artists release their work on labels outside the country. This is the main reason why we found it necessary to create a label here and call it Mieruba. At the origin of it all was our desire to create high-quality work in close collaboration with the artists themselves. And it this passion that continues to fuel everything we do. All of us, whether it is the label’s founder, the paid and unpaid workers, the interns and everyone else who works with us in the production and distribution – we all get our energy from this love for music. This is what propels us forward. Our mission really is to put front and centre the kind of music that often gets ignored by the mainstream. In this sense, we are part of a counterculture, standing firm against the kind of musical standardisation you can hear all around you. Through its musical productions, Mieruba helps to safeguard musical diversity and promote musical democracy. We want to become the passageway, taking the music from the realm of unpaid craftsmanship, through emergence and into the professional sphere.

Spoiler de 'Live' by Mama Sissoko on Radio Nova Lyon.
Merci Mathieu Girod !

MAMA SISSOKO_Part #3

In 1988, with the help of Françoise Huguier, Mama formed his own group, ‘le Ton Jon de Ségou’. Three years later, he began a new solo career between his native Mali and Paris. He recorded ‘Narena’, his first cassette under his own name, in 1991. With the help of Rémy Kolpa Kopoul, he performed on several major stages, opening for BB King at the La Villette Jazz Festival, and had a huge success at La Chapelle des Lombards, in particular when he invited the Brazilian singer Teca Calazans to join him in a duet which was to appear on his first CD ‘Jarabi’ (1997). The multiple rhythms of Bobo, Bambara, Sarakolé, Peul, Songhaï and Mandingue weave the fabric on which Mama Sissoko builds his compositions largely influenced by blues and jazz. Then came a second album, ‘Soleil de Minuit’ (1999), dedicated to her sister Nassima, produced like the previous one with her accomplice Michel Zacha and a number of Malian, Guinean and Colombian musicians. In 2000, Mama Sissoko decided to move to Ségou, where he resumed his work with the Super Biton Orchestra alongside other members and new musicians, passing on the baton to future generations. In 2004, Santana and Herbie Hancock asked him to play with them at the Montreux Festival.
In 2023, Mama Sissoko was awarded the Mérite national.

MAMA SISSOKO_Part #2

In 1974, Mama Sissoko joined ‘Le Super Biton de Ségou’, as lead singer and guitarist. For 10 years, the group toured Europe and Africa, playing in Angoulême (Musiques Métisses festival) and Paris (Palais des Glaces, Casino de Paris), and in East and West Germany in 1986.

National recognition came in 1970, during the first Cultural Biennial organised by Moussa Traoré. The Biton regional orchestra - not yet known as «Super» - wowed young Malians with its silky brass, subtle guitars, roaring bass, lyrical vocals and resolutely modern sound. On this occasion, Mama Sissoko won the Ebony Guitar prize. «In 1991, with the change of regime, Alpha Oumar Konaré told the musicians to take charge, and the Biennales came to an end,» he recalls. Marked by the death of several historic members, disillusionment and wanderings, the group went on hiatus and the musicians tried their luck solo.

MAMA SISSOKO_ Part #1

Mama Sissoko was born in 1949 in Nioro du Sahel, 450 km north of Bamako. When he was a teenager, his father Bassidi Sissoko and mother Manthia Kouyaté sent him to Bamako to live with his uncle Djeli Baba Sissoko. Djeli Baba Sissoko was a renowned griot and n'goni player in Bamako, and young Mama was naturally introduced to music in this environment. Mama began by accompanying Sissoko on percussion, before taking up the guitar. It was then that he spent his school grant money on an acoustic guitar and managed to convince the mayor of his home town to invest in an electric guitar. He began to play the guitar, self-taught, and developed his own particular style, derived from n'goni playing and Bambara specificities. When he did his military service, he joined the 'Orchestra A de Bamako'. For six years he played with the 'Orchestre National de Bamako' and accompanied it on tours throughout Mali and abroad, including Libya. During the presidency of Modibo Keïta, he played for Kwame Nkrumah, Haïlé Sélassié, and for Che Guevara in Mopti. During the 70s, the Malian music scene was heavily influenced by American music, and Mama affirmed his affinity with blues and soul music, particularly that of Otis Redding.

📣📣📣Without waiting any longer, Mieruba is excited to announce the forthcoming release of Live, the album by the greatest guitarist Mama Sissoko!!
A veteran of the great Malian orchestra, the Super Biton de Ségou, Mama Sissoko is an accomplished musician. His music traverses Mandingo, Bambara, Sarakolé, Songhai, Bobo, Peul, Malinke and Bozo traditions, all while flirting with jazz. On stage, Mama Sissoko is a purist who engages with the audience bringing his energy, urgent vocals and truly inspired guitar solos throughout the concert. ‘Live' brings together recordings from a concert given in Paris at La Villette in 1998 and takes us back to a high point in Mama Sissoko's career.
In ‘Live’, we find tracks from Mama Sissoko's second solo album ‘Soleil de Minuit’, which was released in 1999 by Buda Music. As on the album, the different guitars overlap without compromising the unity of the music, rendering an earthy atmosphere despite being very complex. The recording of this concert was superb. We can hear every note, every nuance, every instrument and voice in the many-layered compositions.
Accompanied by incredible musicians, including Toussaint Sainé, his partner in the Super Biton orchestra, ‘Live’ plays in the timeless way of Malian music. What's more, it gives us the gift of its most direct and powerful dimension, that of live music, as if 20 years hadn't passed.
'Live' will be released on 2LP Gatefold/CD Digipack and digitally on 26 January.
PRE-ORDER our copy now and taste the opening of the concert:

📣📣📣SUPER BITON DE SEGOU - Afro.Jazz.Folk Collection Vol 2 OUT NOW!
Mieruba is thrilled to present this new collaboration with Deviation Records: the 2nd Volume of Super Biton de Segou’s Afro.Jazz.Folk collection. The collection includes early and rare 70s recordings showcasing the diverse musical roots of 1970s Mali, combining Afro-Latin percussion, Mandingo songs, jazzy brass, and funky guitar.

Ségou is a crossroads between the Bambara, Peul, Mandingo and Somono cultures, and Super Biton has drawn on all these traditions to create a repertoire extremely rich in rhythms and lyrics. The modern, sophisticated compositions incorporate electric instruments and brass, and open up to Cuban music, with congas and bongos completing the orchestra's sound. Super Biton triumphed at the Biennales Nationales du Mali in 1972, 1974 and 1976, thanks to its silky brass, subtle guitars, roaring bass, lyrical vocals and resolutely modern sound. Since then, it has become Mali's best-known and most sought-after orchestra outside the country's borders.

Afro.Jazz.Folk Collection presents previously unreleased tracks by the legendary orchestra that have been confided to Mieruba by members of the orchestra to bring them back into the limelight.

The album contains eleven tracks, the first of which, 'Nantan', serves as an introduction. It is followed by the stunning song 'Bouguel' which starts right in with one of Super Biton’s signature guitar riffs, urgent vocals and tart brass. Underneath and supporting these elements are the beautifully complex percussive mix of trap drums, shakers and hand drums including an impressive drum solo about mid-song. The horns and vocals reemerge and are followed by a more impressive guitar solo. The next song, 'Atou N Diaye', introduces a keyboard that carries the rhythm while the scorching guitar plays rippling notes on top.

And so it goes throughout the album: one rare gem of a song after another. These older recordings intentionally retain the original sound of the tapes whether recorded in live or studio settings. Super Biton’s version of the classic song 'Farafina' presented here is a standout in the collection as it is the one song that is a studio recording. Another outstanding moment is the band’s previously unheard version of 'Diarabi Muso', another classic interpreted here with the unique musical artistry that only Super Biton de Ségou can provide.

The Collection is a vibrant testimony to the musical effervescence that reigned in Ségou and in Mali in these years of overflowing cultural creativity and a tribute to all its talented musicians who crossed the road to Super Biton.
