Smart, cost-saving and recyclable wingsails for cargo ships

FastRig technology is suited to existing commercial vessels with available deck space – dry bulkers and tankers – because freestanding rigs allows access to holds. Some 10,000 of these ships are suitable for conversion to sailing hybrid (i.e. clear deck space, windy routes).

The environmental benefits
• Can save approximately 20% fuel on a transatlantic crossing on a Panamax-sized bulk cargo ship

• 20% fuel and associated GHG emissions for up to 40,000 existing cargo ships
• Potential to save 736,000 MT of ship's fuel consumption by 2030

No port-side infrastructure changes required – FastRigs fold to allow standard loading and unloading processes.

👏N2 Applied has developed a technology that enables local production of fertiliser using only livestock slurry, air and electricity. The technology adds nitrogen from the air into slurry, which increases the nitrogen content. The reaction prevents the loss of ammonia and eliminates methane emissions, making it a real solution helping to achieve climate target commitments on an industrial scale.

The end-product is a nitrogen enriched organic fertiliser (NEO), which has the same characteristics as normal slurry, but contains more nitrogen and significantly less emissions. It can still be spread using existing farm equipment, enabling farmers to improve their own food production, reduce the need for chemical fertiliser, and make farming more circular.

Behind many medicinal drugs is a dirty truth. Inadequate environmental laws allow pharmaceutical factories to dump their waste in nature. In Hyderabad, India, a place where many of Sweden’s medical drugs are manufactured, the water contains enough drug residues that we could actually extract it. The result was ​Sordidum Pharmacum - ​a medicine few would take voluntarily.

Sordidum Pharmacum is made of water derived from the vicinity of several pharmaceutical factories. In collaboration with Research Institutes of Sweden, we have analyzed and extracted the active drug residue from this water. The result became a ”medicine” that really shows what the pharmaceutical factories are exposing the environment and millions of people to.

Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, from the Mbororo pastoralist community in Chad, talks about the challenges facing this indigenous community and their land from climate change. Located in the middle of Africa, Chad is a very vulnerable nation, threatened by rising temperatures and frequent drought. The Mbororo live a semi-nomadic or nomadic lifestyle, herding livestock in search of water and pasture - but with increasing droughts, there is often not enough water to support livelihoods.

▶️During her fellowship, Ibrahim documented indigenous traditional knowledge to help climate scientists better understand the effects of climate change in that region and, ultimately, to help her community adapt. ◀️

She is an expert on indigenous rights, climate change adaptation and mitigation techniques, and is a co-chair of the International Indigenous Peoples' Forum on Climate Change, which represents indigenous groups worldwide in U.N. climate negotiations.
