Join United HomeCare® in honoring 2025 Claude Pepper Hispanic Leadership Award recipient, Mario E. Tapia, Founder, President and CEO of Latino Center for Aging (LCA). For well over 40 years, he has worked indefatigably to develop and improve access to services for the elderly throughout our nation, especially on behalf of the less fortunate, the frail, and the minority older persons.
A native of San Felipe, Chile, Mr. Tapia earned a degree in Philosophy and Education from the Pontificia Catholic University of ValparaĂ­so, Chile, prior to moving to the United States. His first elderly-related role was as Planner/Coordinator for the Somerset County Office on Aging, Somerville, New Jersey, in 1977.
Latino Center for Aging was established in 1991. As an advocate of our nation’s seniors, Mr. Tapia has been called to serve on various entities, such as Miami-Dade County’s Elder Affairs Advisory Board and the New York State Senate Advisory Committee on Aging. He has also participated in numerous conferences as well as the White House Conference on Aging on multiple occasions. Mario Tapia hosts and produces the Para Mayores program on Miami’s La Poderosa 640 AM radio.
This year is especially significant as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Senator Claude Pepper’s birthday and the 30th anniversary of our Claude Pepper Awards.
Congratulations to Mario E. Tapia and all outstanding honorees, both past and present.

United HomeCare is pleased to share the 2025 Claude Pepper Award Honorees with you! Join us on May 16th in recognizing South Florida’s most inspiring leaders —dedicated changemakers who, like the late Honorable Claude Pepper, have profoundly impacted the lives of elderly and disabled adults and enriched our community.
The awards, hosted by United HomeCare® with the generous support of The Claude Pepper Foundation, are named after Senator Claude D. Pepper, an unwavering advocate for the poor, disenfranchised, and elderly, who dedicated 60 years to serving Florida in the U.S. Senate from 1936 to 1951 and in the House of Representatives from 1963 to 1989. Notably, he sponsored the Older Americans Act and played a crucial role in protecting Social Security benefits, Medicaid, and other programs related to the health and welfare of older Americans.
This year, we are proud to celebrate, along with the Honorees, the 30th anniversary of these prestigious awards and the 125th anniversary of Senator Claude Pepper's birthday.

Join United HomeCare® in honoring 2025 Claude Pepper Education & Advocacy Award recipient, Rudy Fernandez, Executive Vice President for University Operations and External Affairs and Chief of Staff at the University of Miami. He focuses on advancing organizational excellence across UM’s areas of endeavor —education, research, health care, and athletics.
A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Miami, Mr. Fernandez held various leadership roles in the federal government in Washington D.C, including Special Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs at The White House, until 2007 when he returned to Miami. He is a member of Iron Arrow, the highest honor attained at UM, and the Orange Bowl Committee.
This year is especially significant as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Senator Claude Pepper’s birthday and the 30th anniversary of our Claude Pepper Awards.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
United HomeCare® joins the South Florida community in expressing its sadness at the passing of former Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart, a tireless champion for freedom, democracy, and justice. His unwavering dedication to public service and his advocacy for human rights, particularly for the Cuban-American community and those seeking liberty, have left an indelible mark on history.
He served as Florida State Representative from 1987 to 1989; Florida State Senator from 1989 to 1993; and U.S. Representative / Florida’s 12th Congressional District from 1993 to 2011.
Throughout his career, DĂ­az-Balart fought for the voiceless, stood firmly in his convictions, and worked relentlessly to create a better future for so many. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to justice will never be forgotten.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
