ANAMBRA ELECTION: Soludo dedicates victory to policemen killed by gunmen during town hall meeting.

Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has dedicated his victory in the 2021 Anambra Governorship Election to three policemen killed when he was attacked by gunmen in April 2021 during a town hall meeting in his hometown in Isuofia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He spoke during an acceptance speech shortly after he was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday morning.

The Returning Officer of the Anambra Governorship Election, Prof Florence Obi, announced the result on Wednesday morning at the INEC office in Awka, Anambra State.

“That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar said on Wednesday.

Soludo, who was the apex bank governor between 2004 and 2009, was declared winner after a supplementary election was held in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday. He won 19 of the 21 local governments areas including Ihiala LGA.

Sixty one-year-old Soludo won with 112,229 votes beating Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 53,807 votes, and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress who got 43,285 votes. Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party polled 21,261 votes came fourth.

Describing the election as a reflection of the will of the people, Soludo promised to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state while extending an olive branch to his contenders in the race.

Our attention has been drawn to the statement by the Anambra state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC Mr Basil Ejidike where he called for the cancellation of the November 6th Gubernatorial election in the state.

It has become instructive that we address this issue squarely and to make it clear that Basil Ejidike belongs to the fifth columnist that is against the democratic process that we have today.

What locus does Basil Ejidike have to challenge the outcome of the election when the process that produced the candidate of his party the All Progressives Congress APC leaves much to be desired.

Anambra people have spoken going by the results already announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and the rantings of the opposition cannot change the wishes and aspirations of Ndi Anambra to sustain the socioeconomic development of our dear state.

We congratulate His Excellency Gov Willie Obiano, the National Leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA for the victory in eighteen local government areas and it has become clear that Anambra electorates have chosen their governor hence the submissions of Basil Ejidike is Inconsequential and does not hold water .

We urge members of the public to discountenance the statements of Ejidike which is a case of bad looser .

The Anambra governorship election has been declared inconclusive by INEC.
The state Returning Officer for the election, Florence Obi, the vice-chancellor of University of Calabar, who made the declaration in the early hours of Monday, around 12:20 a.m., said this was because there was no election in Ihiala Local Government Area which has over 148,000 registered voters.
INEC could not deploy voting materials to Ihiala during Saturday’s election because of the security threat, she said.
Charles Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), scored a total of 103,946 votes and won the election in 18 out of the 21 local government areas of the state.
His closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 51,322 and won in only one local government area.
“Based on constitutional consideration and provisions of the Electoral Act as well as the Revised Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections issued by the commission, supplementary election is indicated for Ihiala Local Government Area,” the state returning officer, Mrs Obi said.
She said the constitution provides for a candidate to secure both the highest number of votes cast and 25 per cent of votes cast in at least two-third of the local government areas of the state before he is declared winner.
“Therefore, it is important to complete the election in Ihiala to make this determination,” she said.
“Section 179 (3) of the Constitution provides that a rerun election shall take place if no candidate meets the requirement of sub-section 2. Such a run-off shall be between the candidate with the highest number of votes and one among the remaining candidates who secured a majority of votes in the highest number of local government areas in the state,” she added.

Police officers deployed for Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State have protested the alleged non-payment of their feeding allowance.

The officers, on Friday, demanded that the N10,000 approved for their feeding should be paid immediately.
DAILY POST learnt that the cops, many of whom arrived Anambra during the week, were not given accommodation.
According to a video made available to DAILY POST on Friday, the officers gathered at Idemili Ogidi Police Division, chanting “pay us our money.”
“Here are policemen protesting over non-payment of Election feeding allowance. 10,000 naira is the amount for feeding. Meanwhile, over three days now, no accommodation and no food to eat. Many of the junior ranks are stranded in Idemili Ogidi Division where they received 1,500 police personnel from Lagos State,” an affected senior police officer told our correspondent.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, did not answer calls to his phone number, neither did he reply a message seeking his reaction to the incident.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, had deployed over 34,000 policemen to Anambra for the governorship election.
