Considering human nature is pragmatic. At_Us consider that writing in ancient times may be for two purposes, controlling and tracking. Starts from controlling and tracking how much grains are stored, how long it could last, until to control for a massive building project. Counting how many slaves it needs to build the pyramids and tracking the progression of it. Tool of power in short.
Indeed communication to both Humans and God(s) may also be the purpose of ancient writing. But it is hard to see the likelihood that writing emerges for such a reason. The reason is that even without writing, ancient people did not have any communication difficulties, even they were able to pass down stories and teaching without the need of it. Second, for the God(s) or praying purposes. Which one emerges first, prayer to ancestors, etc, or writing? The first doesn't it? Indeed writing revolutionized human interaction and communication, but it did not mean that it is the reason for the creation of the writing system.
Rather than that, the urge for power seems more practical and realistic. From power to secure their life in the winter, counting the supply of grains, or taxes, even for documenting something important, and many else. It is all not focused on improving communication, but to gain more power, at least to survive.
Of course, there are lots of possibilities, to explain what is the purpose of writing in ancient times. But at least for now, it is better to do write something useful, like journals! To keep yourself on track.
