THE LOUDNESS WAR

The "Loudness War" refers to the increasing trend in music production to prioritize loudness over dynamic range, often at the expense of sound quality. Dynamic range is the difference between the quietest and loudest parts of a track. Compressing this range allows producers to make music sound louder, but it often results in a loss of depth, clarity, and emotional impact.

The "war" began in the late 20th century when producers realized that louder tracks stood out more on the radio and in music charts. This led to the use of dynamic compression to increase the overall volume of recordings. While some genres, like pop and hip-hop, have embraced this louder, punchier sound, others—particularly rock and classical music—have suffered from a loss of dynamic range. The result is often a flattened, lifeless sound that lacks nuance and excitement.

Interestingly, modern streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music now try to normalize the loudness of tracks to provide a consistent listening experience. This means that excessively loud tracks aren’t automatically favored, potentially signaling the end of the Loudness War. Some mastering engineers and artists are pushing for a return to greater dynamic range, advocating for sound quality over sheer volume.

In conclusion, while the Loudness War has pushed the boundaries of how loud music can get, it’s come at the cost of musical dynamics and listener enjoyment. Audiophiles and producers alike are now rethinking this approach, focusing on delivering a more balanced, high-quality sound experience that respects the dynamics of the original recording.

Our Native DSD Music Album of the Week is Hope by Pigeon is My Friend.

This is an Analog Recording, transferred to Stereo DSD by Vladas Straupas at AnalogFather studios. It is on sale at 25% Off until July 23rd.

Pigeon Is My Friend is a rock band from Lithuania. The band consists of three people who listen to very different styles of music, so they are always experimenting and searching for their real sound. The band describes their music as post-rock.

Since the first album Pigeon Is My Friend changed their style and in 2022 released an album titled Hope. Through their music the band members are telling stories about their lives and the inner struggles that we all have.

NativeDSD Listener Jon Dennerlein says "This is great music with an expansive sound stage and separation of instruments. The musical and technical quality of sound from the mix of electronic and real instruments is done very well here and that is rare. Sometimes I’m disappointed in a download but definitely not this one."

2022 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Jazz Fusion.
The album was recorded to Analog Tape at Studijofonas Recording Studio in Lithuania. It was transferred to Stereo DSD128 by AnalogFather using the Korg MR-2000S DSD recorder and Analog to Digital Converter for release at NativeDSD Music as part of the first trio of DSD albums from the label.

NativeDSD.com was founded in 2013 and launched early in 2014 by Jared Sacks (Channel Classics Records founder and recording engineer) and his son Jonas (cinematographer and music/web enthusiast). Starting out with just the Channel Classics Records catalogue and two other small labels with about 170 albums (in DSD at the time), their goal was to create a central place where highest resolution music fans could go to find the best quality recordings in the world in both Stereo and Multichannel, directly from labels recording in DSD and/or DXD.
