As we commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day, UN expert Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond calls for urgent action in Lesotho to address the challenges faced by persons with albinism. These challenges include stigma, discrimination, and a lack of access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment.
During her recent 10-day visit to Lesotho, Miti-Drummond emphasized the critical need to remove barriers that prevent individuals with albinism from fully enjoying their rights. She highlighted that concrete measures focused on the specific needs of persons with albinism can have far-reaching impacts, significantly improving their quality of life and life expectancy.
Persons with albinism in Lesotho often experience serious barriers due to their condition, including visual impairments and an increased risk of skin cancer from lack of access to sunscreen. The stigma and discrimination they face due to their skin color further hinder their ability to access education and employment, leading to poverty and social exclusion.
Miti-Drummond urged the Lesotho authorities to prioritize removing these barriers to ensure that individuals with albinism can lead dignified and fulfilling lives. By addressing these issues, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Boosting investments #ForPeopleForPlanet along with coordinated & scaled-up action in key areas is vital to accelerating the #GlobalGoals.
