Deputy Speaker Koffa rejects allegations by Speaker Bhofal Chambers linking him to conflict of interest; says Speaker Chambers is misinformed .

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Fonati Koffa has denied allegations made against him by Speaker Bhofal Chambers, and termed it as misleading.

Recently, Speaker Chambers accused Deputy Speaker Koffa of being involved with conflict of interest, by serving as a lawyer for the central bank of Liberia, LTA, Bea Mountain mining Company, as well as undermining the office of the speaker.

However, the Deputy speaker told a team of journalists on Tuesday that his Boss, Dr. Bhofal Chambers is misinformed.

Deputy speaker Koffa denied the allegations of him representing any legal interest of the Central Bank of Liberia, LTA, Bea Mountain and Sloway among other names mentioned by Speaker Bhofal Chambers.

The Liberia Deputy Speaker is heavily challenged for the Speakership by incoming ruling Unity Party Candidate Richard Nagbe Koon.

" Conflict of interest hangs over Koffa "
-Speaker Chambers brands him as unfit Ahead of Speakership Election

House Speaker Bhofal Chambers has branded his deputy, Fonati Koffa, as a compromised lawmaker, rendering him unfit to preside over the 55 Liberian Legislature.

Members of the 55th Legislature are expected to go to the polls on January 15, 2024 to elect a speaker and deputy speaker.

Deputy speaker Koffa is standing in the elections to replace his boss, Speaker Bhofal Chambers, who is challenging the Pleeboe Sodokan district representative election result between he and former student leader, Anthony F. Williams of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP).

Speaking to the Voice of Hope in Maryland County recently, Speaker Chambers said Representative Koffa is already compromised, and electing him to the speakership post would erode the credibility of the House.

"We have somebody who has been compromised, the current deputy speaker who wants to be speaker"

Chambers said Representative Koffa is a personal lawyer for a number of public and private institutions, a contravention of the Liberian Constitution

"It is common knowledge that Honorable Koffa is the lawyer for the Central Bank of Liberia. He cannot be a lawmaker and at the same time lawyer of the Central Bank of the CBL. You cannot be a lawmaker or deputy speaker and you are the lawyer of Liberia Telecommunication Authority and Maritime and Bea Mountains".

The Maryland lawmaker also accused his deputy of undermining the office of the speaker. Chambers claims he complained the deputy speaker to President Weah on the matter.

"But it's sad because for the time we have been in the legislature for the entire six years he has been undermining the office of the speaker to the extent that I even had to talk to the president and the president had to call him".

Meanwhile, Mr. Koffa has rubbished claims suggesting he is the personal lawyer to a few public and private entities in the country.

Speaking in an interview with a host of Liberian journalists up Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Koffa said Chambers is suffering from trauma caused by his defeat to Mr. Anthony Williams.

Meanwhile, the Unity Party has pledged full support for Montserrado County District #11 Representative Hon.Richard Nagbe Koon for the Speakership, it can be recalled that Nimba County District #7 Representative Elect Hon. Musa Hassan Bility who initially declared his intention to contest recently withdraw from the race and endorsed the Unity Party Candidate in the pending race that is slated for January 15, 2024.
