UNDP Liberia is delighted to announce the signing of the Responsible Party Agreement (RPA) with iCampus Liberia to implement the Community-Based Forestry and Protected Area Management (CBFM) Project, a special cohort of the Growth Accelerator Liberia Programme.

The Growth Accelerator Liberia Programme aims to support impactful and innovative businesses and agricultural cooperatives in Liberia across all industries.

In 2022, the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia signed an agreement with the UNDP Liberia in partnership with FAO Liberia and in collaboration with the Forestry Development Authority, Republic of Liberia (FDA) to implement the Community-Based Forestry and Protected Area Management Project (CBFM).

As a component of the Liberia MSME Growth Accelerator Programme, the project aims to enhance the management of community forests and protected areas in Liberia.

Through targeted support for youth, women, persons with disabilities, and enterprises, the program aims to reduce poverty, minimize inequality, and foster resilient livelihoods, ensuring sustainable and non-harmful forest practices.

This year, the CBFM accelerator will recruit, educate, and award USD 10,000 to (30) thirty forest-based entrepreneurs from seven counties-Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount, Lofa, Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Sinoe, and Rivercess.

- Sampson Lamah Faces Robbery and Harassment Charges for Allegedly Extorting Money from BAO CHICO Mining Affected Farmers

By Henry B Gboluma Jr - March 26, 2024

- In a shocking development in the ongoing saga surrounding BAO CHICO Mining, Sampson Lamah finds himself at the center of controversy as he faces robbery and harassment charges for forcibly taking a significant portion of money from several mining-affected farmers in Gungbayah Chiefdom.

The incident has left the community in disbelief and outrage as they demand justice for some of the exploited farmers.

Jallah Sumo, age 45, whose farm suffered damages due to the activities of BAO CHICO Mining, reported to the police in Bopolu City on March 25, 2024, that he had received a compensation payment of 1,935 USD on March 23, 2024, from the mining company.

However, his relief quickly turned to shock when Sampson Lamah, a figure associated with the company, allegedly visited his home and took 800.00 USD from him without consent.

The accused also reportedly collected 1000 USD from Esther Dorley, another victim who signed for 1,200.00 as benefits from the mining company for damaging her farm.

As for Mamalone Beyah who got 4,806.00 USD, she refused to buy into Sampson's Pressure.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Sampson Lamah strongly defended his actions by claiming that taking the money was a "kind gesture."

However, his explanation did little to satisfy the concerns of the community and the authorities, who swiftly took action to ensure that justice was served.

The Liberia National Police (LNP) in Gbarpolu acted promptly on Jallah Sumo's report and charged Sampson Lamah with robbery and harassment.

Subsequently, Sampson Lamah has been detained pending his transfer to court, where he will have to answer for his alleged crimes and face the consequences of his actions.

Sampson Lamah a resident of one of the mining-affected towns, is working with the Company as the Safety Officer. He is also the spokesperson for the affected communities and most of the time aids the company Liaison Officer, Edwin Darjue who has distanced himself from this reported news.

A list dated March 23, 2024, in our possession which is attested by the Bombom Clan Chief Francis Chewoe has six names including the three mentioned names in this article that received money from the Iron Ore Mining Company for damaging their farms.

Meanwhile, the Clan Chief has distanced himself from Sampson's alleged exploitation.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the affected community farmers and supporters are closely watching the case, hoping for a fair and just resolution that upholds the rights of the impacted individuals and serves as a deterrent against further exploitation in the mining-affected areas.

Macky Sall Congratulates Senegal’s Opposition Leader On The Presidential Election As Rivals Concede Defeat
12 hr. ago

By Paul Ejime

Outgoing Senegal’s President Macky Sall, on Monday, congratulated opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his victory in Sunday’s presidential election.

Almost all other presidential candidates, including former Prime Minister Ahmadou Ba, the candidate of the ruling Alliance for Republic, APR, have also conceded defeat and congratulated Faye.

“I salute the smooth running of the election and congratulate the winner, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye, who is the winner by the trends. This is the victory of Senegalese democracy,” Sall said through a post on his X, former Twitter handle, hours after Ba had congratulated Faye.

The National Electoral Commission, CENA, is still compiling the official tally of the election in the country’s 14 regions.

But unofficial estimates indicate that Faye might have received about 57% of the vote, against the runner-up Ba’s 31%.

Under Senegal’s Constitution, a candidate requires more than 50% of the vote to win the presidency in the first round of balloting, otherwise, the two frontrunners go into a run-off vote.

The Appeal Court of Dakar is expected to announce the final figures of Sunday’s contest on Wednesday, and this will be validated by the Constitutional Council if no objections are raised.

The Council has the final say on electoral matters in the country, while CENA supervises the electoral process.

President Sall will hand over power to Faye, as Senegal’s 5th and youngest President on April 2nd.

It is a perfect birthday present for Faye, who turned 44 on Sunday, the election day, and a great relief particularly to pro-democracy advocates in Senegal and ECOWAS, which is battling growing military incursions into politics in the region, with four of its 15 member States now under army rule.

Credit should also go to the Senegalese population, especially the civil society groups for their resilience in checkmating Sall’s political manoeuvrers.

Among the immediate tasks of Faye, a former tax collector is the reconciliation of a country, whose democratic standing had been shaken in the past couple of years, particularly by Sall’s tenure elongation plan, which he was forced under local and international pressure to abandon.

But this was not before the attendant political tension and street protests that killed at least 20 people, followed by uncertainties over the rescheduling of the presidential vote originally fixed for 25 February, before it was moved to March 24.

As an appeasement gesture, a subdued President Sall declared a general amnesty for detainees recently, including Faye and his comrade Ousmane Sonko, who were released to join the campaign trail.

Sonko was barred from contesting the presidential election following his conviction for radicalizing the youths, a charge critics consider politically motivated.

Meanwhile, Faye has promised to tackle corruption and address the needs of Senegal’s youthful population from where he and Sonko draw their most support.

Given the unsalutary experiences of “anointed candidates” or Godfatherism in Africa, political observers will closely monitor the Faye-Sonko relationship with political power in their hands. # #

The Chairperson of the Bomi legislative caucus and district number two lawmaker, Honorable Mannah Bishop Johnson calls for regional infrastructural development.

Speaking to scores of journalists over the weekend in Tubmanburg, honorable Johnson stressed the need for regional development with priorities on constructing a regional university, regional hospital, regional sports pitch, and recreational center amongst others.

His statement comes immediately after the three Western Liberia legislative caucuses conveyed a sitting and formed the Western Region Legislative Caucus.

The Bomi caucus chairperson also used the opportunity to inform journalists about benefits for Bomi County from the regional formed legislative body.

It can be recalled the Western Region Journalists Association (WReJA) on March 1, 2024, in her Press Statement called on the three counties' caucuses to amalgamate under a singular legislative regional body to urgently intervene in the rising protests in the region.

It noted in that release that a singular legislative regional body needed to be formed to directly lead the charge in pursuing concession companies to implement agreements that benefit the citizens in those concession areas.

A Call for Help to Enhance Skills of Physically Challenged People for Livelihood

By: Ibrahim Kalise Sesay

March 24, 2024

Bomi County - Across Bomi County, People living with Disability (PWD) have many issues that continue to impact them negatively in the community they live in.

The problems are enormous; it covers the inaccessibility to their physical environments to negative attitudes of people towards them.

Several people, including advocates and humanitarian organizations, as well as human rights groups, are working to remedy the situation.

Amidst these existing and emerging problems, there is gradual progress being made in some areas such as inclusion into decision-making at the county level, giving them the space to speak on issues affecting them but with greater improvement needed.

While others see disability as a major tragedy, some of those in said condition remain optimistic and still tailor their lives to the popular saying by Stephen Hawking which states that "concentrate on the abilities, your disability doesn't hinder and don't dwell on the things it interferes with. Be disabled physically, not in spirit."

One person who dares to challenge his disability to make his life productive is Mr. Boka Powell.

Mr. Powell lives in Tubmanburg with his wife and young daughter in a small apartment given to him by Father Gareth Jenkins, a Catholic Prelate.

He and his family have lived in this cream and brown-painted apartment for many years.

Mr. Boka Powell also known by his popular name Pa Boka, seems very resourceful and productive as he engages in agricultural work and bread making.

As I sat with him at his residence to interview him, he told me about his education and the skills he has acquired as a person living with a disability.

He looked me in the eye and said "The time I was in School those days, though I didn't go far I didn't learn any trade in school, I just got in the junior and I drop due to financial strength so the war came and I went to Ivory Coast and from Ivory Coast to Ghana."

He said to me that with his considerable knowledge in reading and writing, it is sufficient for him to make life without furthering his secondary education because he was aging and decided to enroll in a vocational program to help his family and to leave a legacy for the future.

"This time when you look at education, once I can speak, you I can write l, it is okay for me," he said, "I am getting old and tomorrow I thought I would become a family man so I should take a trade, I decided to do so that I will be able to help my family. When I know my trade, I will be able to pass it on and leave a legacy for the future."

He said that he specializes in making different kinds of bread, and he wants to continue his business of making bread to sell for sustainability for himself and his family.

With a deep smile on his face, Mr. Powell said, "I learned a big skill but due to the financial strength that is not there so I decided to bring myself down in the other way to get my food on the table."

As an internationally certified baker by profession, he pleads with goodwill people to assist him with bread-making machines or any other bread-making equipment to get him back in business.

To help him start at the moment, he needs a mixer and an oven to enable him and his wife to produce quality bread according to him.

"Now now I and my wife don't have a mixer and a bigger oven," he stated.

Although Mr. Powell has distinguished himself and added value to his life as a Person Living With Disability, he expressed genuine concern about the welfare and well-being of PWDs in Bomi County.

He feels despair about the poor conditions of People with disabilities. He says those in the street "don't have the mind to be in street corners begging for handouts to survive but they are suffering. They are not getting the money so easily because they spent the entire day in the hot sun to get money for food."

He described the dwelling places of some of his colleagues disabled as horrible, adding that such places are not meant for human beings.

Meanwhile, to find a solution to their existing programs, Bokai Powell calls on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr and the caucus of Bomi County to come to their aid.

"Even some of the people whose living conditions in the houses they stay in are not very good so I pray, I am asking the caucus of Bomi, the president of Liberia, to come to our aid." He said

Similar concerns have been re-echoed by the human rights officer of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) assigned in Bomi Mr. Christopher Johnson. He is concerned about the human dignity of PWDs and their children.

He wants the national government to aid PWDs. Chris Johnson cited that Children of PWDs not being in school breeds poverty in Liberian society.

Parents of many of those children, according to him, do not have money to send their children to school which results in taking them around to beg to have something to survive on.

"I think about their human dignity, I think the national government needs to come and aid them," he said, "Imagine the child or children of a physically challenged person not in school is a human rights issue and it breeds poverty. You know the man is physically challenged and financially incapacitated at the end of the day, he takes the child around and they will have something to survive on."

It is a hope that people and relevant institutions responsible will come to their aid, Mr. Johnson pleaded.

PRESS RELEASE
March 11, 2024

Bea Mountain Mining Corporation
A Subsidiary of Avesoro Resouroes Inc

The Board of Directors and Senior Management of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation has read with utter dismay, statements by some Liberians, calling for the removal of its Country General Manager, Mr. Debar W. Allen (himself a Liberian).

The statements and protests allege that Mr. Allen is responsible for the actions and inactions of the Company in matters concerning the performance of its obligations in the various communities and the Country.

For the record, Mr. Allen joined the Company in 2013 as a result of a nationwide search by the then CEO and President of Aureus Mining Company Mr. David Reading, with the approval of the Board of Directors.

Contrary to what some may believe, the position of Country General Manager (General Manager for Country Affairs) is not occupied by a person recommended by the Government of Liberia.

ln fact, no such positions exist within the structure of the Company. The Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) that Bea Mountain holds with the Government of Liberia calls for the hiring of qualified and competent Liberians, with no obligations to hire from any specific counties.

Mr. Allen is a model employee and Manager with an impeccable service record. Companies look for employees of such that are ready, wiling and alble to serve with such long-term commitment and distinction.

Bea Mountain Mining Corporation is Liberia's first and largest commercial gold producer, providing employment opportunities for more than 3500 Liberians, and he has contributed enormously to this success story with his commitment, dedication and expertise.

The Board of Directors and Senior Management of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation has NO intentions of seeking his resignations. It is also important to emphasize that whatever actions taken or not taken by the Company cannot and should not be attributed to any one Manager, so the idea that Mr. Allen is responsible for the company not meeting its obligations to employees and communities I cannot be further from the truth.

As a member of a team of more than 10 Managers that runs the business here in Liberia, he is continually seeking creative ways by which the Company can strengthen its social license both in the project areas and the country at large.

An example is the additional commitment to communities today known as the Clan Development Fund which he suggested and championed because the County leaders failed to access and utilize the Community Development Fund that now exceeds 1.3 million USD.

We call on those seeking his resignation or removal to cease and desist and instead join the company in finding more positive ways to strengthen the symbiotic relationships between the Company, the host communities and the country. No amount of pressure or protest will cause the company to act illegally against any of its employees.

Our confidence in our General Manager for Country Affairs, Mr. Debar W. Allen, remains strong, unwavering and uncompromising as he continues to serve at the will and pleasure of the CEO and Board of Directors.

Signed:
Serhan Umurhan

Western Region Journalists Enhance Civic Engagement Skills Through Community Media Forum Training

Three dedicated members of the Western Region Journalists Association (WReJA) have recently completed specialized training in Planning & Moderating Community Media Forums (CMFs), underscoring their commitment to fostering civic engagement and democratic discourse in their communities.

The training program, aimed at equipping journalists with the skills necessary to engage with diverse stakeholders effectively, has significantly boosted the confidence and capabilities of the 18 participants.

The two-day intensive training sessions organized and facilitated by seasoned experts from the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiatives-LMDI with support from Internews in Liberia, provided the journalists with practical insights and tools to plan and conduct impactful CMFs.

Through hands-on exercises and real-world simulations, the participants honed their abilities to facilitate discussions, navigate differing viewpoints, and promote constructive dialogue among community members.

As a result of the training, the three WReJA members emerged with a sharpened understanding of the role of CMFs in promoting civic participation and informed decision-making.

The Manager of Radio Cape Mount 102.4FM Jenneh Kemokai and RADIO BOMI 98.9 FM Manager Tarweh Surkula along with the manager of Voice of Gbarpolu Radio / TV Henry B Gboluma Jr gained valuable improved insights into strategies for involving marginalized voices, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard and respected during public forums.

Armed with their newly acquired skills and knowledge, the journalists are now better equipped to spearhead initiatives that promote civic engagement and democratic values within their communities in Gbarpolu, Bomi. and Grand Cape Mount Counties.

By leveraging the power of CMFs as platforms for open dialogue and exchange, they aim to amplify the voices of citizens, advocate for transparency and accountability, and contribute to the robust public discourse essential for a flourishing democracy.

The Western Region Journalists Association applauds the dedication and commitment of its members to enhancing their professional capabilities and believes that their newfound expertise in planning and moderating CMFs will be instrumental in driving positive change and fostering a more engaged and empowered citizenry in Western Liberia.
