Fellow constituent members of District # 5, B**g County, greetings!
In fulfillment of his constitutional duty guaranteed under article 54-56 of the Liberian constitution, H. E Joseph Nyumah Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia has recently constituted an Assets Recovery Team.
The Team, according to the President, is expected to drive an asset recovery policy and lead the charge for the identification, location, recovery, and retrieval of public resources and properties believed to have been converted to private use by past and present public actors.
It is important to note that we frown on corruption in every aspect as we are knowledgeable that undetected and unchecked corruption in both the public and private sectors can cause serious damages including undermining public trust in government and wasting public resources and money.
We note with conscience that globally, the World Economic Forum has estimated that the cost of corruption is about US$2.6 trillion per annual. The impacts of corruption disproportionately affect the most vulnerable people in society and this is against accountability and the rule of law.
Widespread corruption deters investment, weakens economic growth, and undermines the rule of law. We, as public officials need to demonstrate high level of commitment to processes that promote good governance even if we think these processes are going to affect close associates of ours.
In as much as we welcome the fight against converting public resources to private use through the setting up of an Assets Recovery team, we would like to encourage the President to extend the mandate of the Assets Recovery period beyond the last six (6). This, we believe will demonstrate fairness, transparency and deemed the process wholistic and void of witch-hunting. This move will further point to the President’s willingness to run a government that prefers one group of people over the other, especially through our collective fight against corruption.
