Breaking!

Executive Mansion-Liberia was a concerning scene after more than 300 supplementary staff became enraged, creating pandemonium at the nation's highest seat.

Their enragement was as a result of Deputy Minister Cornelia Kruah-Togba telling them in a meeting that the government cannot continue with their contracts and is terminating their services.

They had thought the meeting was intended to pay their at least three months arrears being owed them since the new government came to power, but became disappointed after being told the Ministry of Finance is processing their payment while being relieved of their jobs.

Sources say they besieged the Mansion, throwing stones and breaking furniture, prompting other employees and security personnel to flee. The Deputy Minister had to be smuggled out of the premises as she became a prime target of the enraged staff.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr wasn't at the Mansion at the time, and Minister Grisby was not in the meeting as well.

The situation was brought under control after the EPS sent for backup and riot police.

Some of the supplementary workers were employed by the Weah Government for some time with the hope of regularizing their status as civil servants had he won a second term.

I am told the supplementary workers could return to the Mansion Monday.

Congressman Chris Smith writes...

U.S. Congressman Chris Smith, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, today issued the following statement regarding the need to establish a War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court in Liberia to help redress the wounds of the country’s civil wars:

“In recent decades, Liberia’s people have suffered untold human rights violations and economic crimes while perpetrators acted with near-complete impunity during the country’s multiple civil wars. Since that time, minimal efforts have been made in Liberia to address these crimes, notwithstanding a recommendation in 2009 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to establish a court to ensure justice.

As a presidential candidate, Joseph Boakai stated repeatedly that a War Crimes and Economic Crimes Court needed to be established for the Liberian people to end impunity and for the nation to heal.

In his inaugural address, President Boakai then committed to pursue ‘the establishment of War & Economic Crimes Court to provide an opportunity for those who bear the greatest responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity to account for their actions in court.’

Since President Boakai assumed office, the local and international communities—including the U.S.—have eagerly awaited the establishment of the Court. This promise was made to the Liberian people who want real change—they desire democracy, human rights, and justice.

The U.S. Congress is also closely monitoring the establishment of this Court as a way to advance good governance and healing for the people of Liberia. We have long supported Liberia with foreign aid, providing over $162 million in 2023 and more than $4 billion over the last 20 years.

There must be justice and accountability for the people of Liberia. Establishing the promised War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court is a necessary, critical step for assuring lasting peace and the people’s confidence in the rule of law and the fair administration of justice in their country

Liberia: US$410K Contract Sparks Concern at Road Fund But Managing Director Wento Says Entity Met All Legal Requirements

MONROVIA — In September 2023, Madam Joseta Neufville Wento, head of the National Road Fund, issued contracts to two companies, BLECO Group Inc. and ASIAN Liberia Investment INC., for consultancy and installation of solar lights.

The cost of each project is $410,500.00 and $160,000.00, respectively. According to reports, the $410,500.00 contract was awarded to BLECO Group Inc. for consultancy services, including project evaluation and soil sampling across the country to inform the Ministry of Public Works about future projects.

The $160,000.00 contract with ASIAN Liberia Investment INC. was for the construction of solar lights in Porkpa, Grand Cape Mount County. It’s reported that each contractor received a 60% advance payment with no bank guarantee. Sources suggest this project was intended to support Mr. Luther Collins, a CDC candidate in the 2023 election in District 2, Gbarpolu County.

When contacted, Madam Joseta Neufville Wento confirmed the contracts were issued and met all legal requirements. Contract documents show that Joseta Neufville Wento, Manager of the National Road Fund, signed the agreements, witnessed by John Tokpah, Administrative Assistant, Hon. Samuel Tweh, Minister of Finance, and Hon. Frank Musa Dean, Minister of Justice.

The agreement states that a 60% advance payment of $246,300.00 was made to the consultant without a bank guarantee, and the consultant’s contract remains incomplete.

It’s also reported that the solar lights project supported the campaign of Bintu Massalay, as the lights were delivered to the candidate’s father, Idrissa Bamaba, for distribution in Porkpa District. Bamaba served as the CDC campaign coordinator in Grand Cape Mount County. Some lights were allegedly taken to towns in Sierra Leone, as many supporters of Massalay hailed from there.

During the same period, the National Road Fund contracted Spokesman ClIr. Kanio B. Gbala for the CDC campaign to re-elect Former President George Weah as its legal consultant and campaign spokesperson. His Liberian Bar Association fees for 2023 and 2024 were paid by the National Road Fund Office.

When contacted, Mr. Gbala confirmed the information, stating, “Yes, I was contracted by the Road Fund as a Legal Consultant. A campaign Spokesperson is a voluntary, unpaid position without any contractual arrangements. Additionally, as a consultant and not an employee, I was/am not required to be in the office from 9 am to 5 pm but rather to respond to work requests in a timely and efficient manner when duly informed.”

In response to whether he still holds a contract with the entity, he said, “Yes, I still hold a contract with the Road Fund. Payment of the Bar Fees of Legal Counsels working with public entities and private corporations is a routine practice in the sector and is considered a corporate expense. You can confirm this from any in-house counsel. It is consistent with this very legitimate and legal practice that my fees were paid for 2023 and 2024, covering the period of my current contract. The fees were paid directly to the Liberia National Bar Association.”

Former Representative district 17 Hon. Hanson Kiazolu writers ✍️ ✍️ ✍️ ✍️

BJ, I was in Cape Mount when the BMMC revision took place. It was a stampede approval. I remember Cllr. Sherman wanted it to wait for the new government, but Senator Taylor, as the Lead, did not agree with Sherman, so the review went through, the decadent of which we saw in recent days. Not even a copy was given to the plenary for a photocopy review. So people should take responsibility for some of these things, especially those ones that hurt their people or did not consider the people interests and the country. I have opted to go through the MDA page by page, but I was also heavily evolved into the campaign. There were lots of things that reeling in my mind that the MDA should have considered, the simplest of which was to consider a representative from Cape mount to be present at the airlifting of every shipment and the established monetary value of what leaving our county.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saturday, March 16, 2024

Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress terms as total display of arrogance and sheer hypocrisy some sweeping statements made by Monrovia former City Mayor and Secretary General of the CDC, Jefferson T. Koijee against the Unity Party Government and an attack on the person of NPA Managing Director, Sekou Hussein Dukuly.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress (UPMYC) has described as a total display of arrogance, sheer hypocrisy and scared tactics on the part of Mr. Jefferson T. Koijee, Secretary General of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to have termed as nonsense President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s Asset Recovery Process.

On Friday, March 15, 2024 in a press conference at the CDC headquarters in Congo Town, Koijee was heard describing the President’s Asset Recovery process as a nonsense and emphasized that no member of their political party who served in government position during the last six (6) years will submit to the process; ‘Not even a chicken of the CDC will submit to that nonsense called asset recovery team’ he said.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress is urging Mr. Koijee and other members of the CDC to desist from making comments which are considered counterproductive to good governance and remain to apply civility in raising whatever concerns they may have.

Moving forward, the Youth Congress of the Unity Party in Montserrado County stands ready to use any legal approach to resist any undemocratic move by Koijee and his gangs against this patriotic policy issued by President Boakai.

Let it be made clear unequivocally that the Asset Recovery Team setup by President Boakai is intended to retrieve and recover all government’s properties and other assets illegally taken away or in possession of former officials of the Liberian government but refused to turn them over despite they are longer at the helm of state power.

Therefore, it was so pathetic and unimaginable for the Secretary General of the CDC to have claimed that the process is a witch-hunt of former officials.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress believes the CDC Secretary General’s statement is a testament to the effect that he and his CDC lack the interest in accountability and transparency for effective and good governance.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress firmly holds the importance of accountability, transparency, and the rule of law as these principles serve as an integral part to the democratic process and the responsible governance of our beloved nation, Liberia.

We commend President Joseph Boakai for taking this initiative and demonstrating his commitment to upholding the principles of good governance.

While the UPMYC remains committed to combating public corruption, the Youth Congress kindly asks the Liberian Chief Executive to give all necessary support to the Joint Security to enable them to assist the Asset Recovery Team do their job properly.

The UPYCMC also calls on all political parties, including the CDC, to embrace this process and cooperate fully with the government's Asset Recovery Team as no individual or political party is above the law, and we must all work together to build a prosperous and corruption-free Liberia.

Meanwhile, the Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress strongly condemns the unfounded, baseless, unsubstantiated and boldface lies by the CDC through its Secretary General, Jefferson Koijee that the Managing Director of the National Port Authority, Hon. Sekou Hussein Dukuly recently witch-hunted some CDCians by dismissing them from the entity.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress wants to appreciate Hon. Sekou Hussein Dukuly, Managing Director of the National Port of Authority (NPA) for his high level of professional leadership he is demonstrating to maintain a peaceful and safe working environment for all employees of the National Port Authority.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress condemned the false allegations from the CDC against the Management of National Port Authority that employees who they claim to be CDCIANS are intimidated and wrongfully been dismissed because they are members of the CDC.

As stated by MD Dukuly, administrative actions were taken against some Liberians or employees of the NPA due to their involvement in corruption and other acts against the policy of the NPA, not because the dismissed individuals are members of the CDC.

It was the CDC under her leadership that employees and contractors were harassed, intimidated and unlawfully dismissed because of their political affiliation, especially the Unity Party.

The MD of the NPA is far from any distraction and childish politics of the CDC and focused on restoring public trust in the Gateway to Liberia’s Economy through his able management team.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress assures Hon. Dukuly and his management team, its unbending support to fight corruption at the National Port Authority.

THINK LIBERIA, LOVE LIBERIA AND BUILD LIBERIA.
