Senator Dillon pledges Senate’s Committee on Information and Broadcasting support to revamp LBS…

Monrovia-Liberia: The Liberian Senate Committee Chairperson on Information, Broadcasting, Culture Affairs and Tourism, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has pledged the committee’s unflinching support in ensuring the revamping of the State Broadcaster ELBC.

Senator Dillon who is also chairman on the Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee is Privileged to Serve as Chairman of the Information Committee based on the consent of his colleagues.

Speaking when he presided over the Confirmation Hearing of the Liberia Broadcasting System Director General Designate, Eugene L. Fahngon, the Montserrado Senator said the committee will work with the Liberia Broadcasting System and the Ministry of Information to change the narrative of the State Broadcaster.

“This committee will work with ELBC and the Ministry of Information so that we can change the narrative so that it (ELBC) can be what it should be”.

The Senator’s statement stems from the deteriorating state of the Liberia Broadcasting System for the last six years ranging from poor content, Political influence, and partisanship.

Senator Dillon also assured the LBS Director General Designate of his commitment to work with the budget committee of the Liberian Senate to allocate funds to get the LBS back on path with its previous status while harnessing new opportunities.

“When the Budget comes, we can assure our people that we will work with the budget to start this thing going; we (the committee) will bring you here many times not to show power but to help to change the narrative”.

Senator Dillon also wants the LBS to be on top of her game by being the source of any major news of the Government.

Meanwhile, LBS Director General Designate Eugene Fahngon has pledged to welcome the views of all Liberians at the Liberia Broadcasting System in adherence to Article 15 of the Liberian Constitution which calls for all Liberians to be given access to the national broadcaster irrespective of political, and religious affiliations among others.

SOURCE:IPNEWS:

A videotape currently circulating on social which depicts an act of romance in the lure to s*xual in*******se via the internet which carries the bodily image of Mr. Robert Kpadeh, the man appointed by President Joseph Boakai, to head the Liberian Mission at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is igniting towering concerns between and amongst local and international partners in the maritime industry of the world.

The Free Conscious Independent and Object Thinkers of Liberia (FCITOL) at a press engagement Friday in Monrovia has joined others in the Liberian public calling for the President, H.E. Joseph N. Boakai to rescind the appointment of Mr. Kpadeh on grounds of being a bad example of a Liberian poised to head such an integral office for Liberia.
According to the head of FCITOL, Mr. Morris Swen, they believed that the Liberian mission to the IMO is still battling with reputational damage it endured in the last two years following the s*x grammar of two of its Officials, Mr. Moses Owen Browne (Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO) and Mr. Daniel Tarr (Director of the Department of Marine Environmental Protection), who were arrested tried, convicted and sentenced in South Korea for r**e.

Mr. Swen has intoned that they are alerting the President about the graved cyber-s*x tape of Mr. Kpadeh to save the country, and is alarming the President about previous defiant s*xual acts permeated by the former IMO boss, Mr. Browne et al.

The IMO has over time unequivocally maintained a zero-tolerance stance on all types of s*xual and gender-based offenses. Thus, it appears unlikely that the IMO may indulge in doing business with Mr. Kpadeh, if President Boakai plays intransigent.

The Free Conscious Independent and Object Thinkers of Liberia boss, Mr. Morris Swen says he is urging the President, that it’s about time he acts in the best interest of the country and rescinds Mr. Kpadeh’s appointment to the IMO and look out in the country and across the world and select Liberia’s best brains with morals and characters in various areas of professionalism and allow them to contribute their knowledge and expertise to the maritime sector.

RECENT missteps have put President Joseph Boakai and his government under the microscope – a controversial trip by the President to Accra, Ghana, and Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s domineering influence and conflict of interest regarding the use of the private plane of a Ghanaian businessman with multiple interests in Liberia.

THE PRESIDENT’S first official trip abroad following his inauguration on January 22nd has been marred by controversy after it emerged that his host, Ghanaian President John Akufo Addo may have not been on the ground to meet him. On Monday, the Executive Mansion announced that President Boakai had left the country for a two-day working visit to Ghana. It stated that while in Ghana, the President will meet and hold consultation with his ‘brother and friend’ President Akufo-Addo on matters if mutual respect.

IN A LETTER TO THE LEGISLATURE, the President informed them that the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Sylvester M. Grigsby, will chair the Cabinet in close consultation with the Vice President as His Excellency remains in communication via telephone.

THE PRESIDENT’S TRAVEL has been the subject of much scrutiny because the trip was shrouded in secrecy.

THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE has up until now, failed to post photographs of his trip to Ghana, meeting his Ghanaian counterparts and officials.

THIS HAS LED to mounting speculations once more that the President’s trip was for a different reason, most likely health related.

THE PRESIDENTIAL PRESS SECRETARY did not make the trip, which is said to have been comprised of only family members. There were no protocol officers, neither was he accompanied by other government officials.

EVEN MORE CONFUSING, FPA has also gathered that there was no meeting between the two leaders as President Akufo Addo is currently out of his country leading a delegation to international conferences in Munich, Germany and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This was confirmed by a release issued by the Executive Mansion late Tuesday, Feb. 14 announcing the return of the President from Ghana.

SIMILARLY, VICE PRESIDENT JEREMIAH KOUNG, has also been caught with his pants down in his own conflicting situation.

THE VP’S OFFICE posted on social media this week photographs of him getting on a private plane belonging to Ghanaian businessman, Ibrahim Mahama. The VP explained that he was on his way to Nigeria where he is representing President Boakai to attend the Bayesla State Governor Inauguration.

THE VP TOLD FRONTPAGEAFRICA that he had run into Ghanaian billionaire businessman Mahama at a local hotel and mentioned that he was on his way to Nigeria and the Ghanaian millionaire offered him a ride to Accra, from where he departed for Nigeria on Monday.

MAHAMA IS THE founder of Engineers and Planners, a West African indigenous-owned mining company, who owns several other businesses in Ghana, including Dzata Cement Limited. He is the younger brother of John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017. Dzata is the name written on the plane which VP Koung accompanied Mahama to Accra.

WHAT IS EVEN MORE ALARMING is the fact that FrontPageAfrica has now learned that the VP also used Mahama’s plane to travel to the Parliamentary Conference on South-South Cooperation in Rabat, Morocco. The conference held under the High patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, kicked off Thursday in Rabat, under the theme “Role of National Parliaments and Regional and Continental Parliamentary Unions in Africa, the Arab World, and Latin America in Enhancing.

THIS IS SO WRONG FOR MANY REASONS.

IN THE SPACE OF ONE WEEK, VP KOUNG has used the private Jet – first to Ghana, and now, Rabat, Morocco – owned by the billionaire Mahama who is already doing business in Liberia and is looking to expand his Liberia interests through the recent deal in which U.S. firm High Power Exploration Inc (HPX), founded by mining billionaire Robert Friedland, signed a letter of intent with Liberia’s government and Guma Africa Group to develop rail and road projects linking it with Guinea. The infrastructure projects, known as the Liberty Corridor, are expected to support the West African region’s connection to world markets and are estimated to cost between $3 billion to $5 billion.

THIS HAS ALL THE MARKINGS of serious conflict of interests both Mr. Boakai and his VP frowned on during the government it succeeded, the George Weah-led Coalition for Democratic Change.

THE VICE PRESIDENT’S office posted photographs with him along with Mr. Morley P. Kamara, Senior Economic Adviser to the President, Jake Kabakollie, Officer in Charge at the National Oil Company of Liberia, Senator Alex Tyler (Bomi), a former controversial speaker of the House of Representatives and representatives and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila

FRONTPAGEAFRICA HAS BEEN INFORMED that NOCAL’s former Chief of Staff, Kabakollie and Senator Tyler are reportedly working through a group in Nigeria in a Government to Government deal similar to Kuwaiti Oil in hopes of securing a deal for oil block allocation. In December 2012, the Sirleaf administration announced the signing an oil agreement with the government of Kuwait. During the same time, the LPRC disclosed that it had discussions with the Kuwaiti Petroleum Company (KPC) for the supply of petroleum products at concessionary price.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that NOCAL cannot sign any agreements with any company or country without a board which has not been named by President Boakai. In 2021, President Weah wrote to his counterpart, President Buhari, requesting allocation for crude oil. This subsequently led to NOCAL and NNPC meeting, and subsequently, NOCAL was placed on the list for allocation.

THE LACK OF ATTENTION to the little details by both President Boakai and his President Koung has given rise to speculations. It also raises questions about the new ruling party’s commitment and pledge to lead a government of transparency and accountability.

INTERESTINGLY, the official release from the Vice President’s office made no mention of a trip to Rabat, Morocco. In a statement, the VP office said, he was going to represent the President at Baysa State Governor Inauguration. The VP’s office said while on the trip, he would be meeting several leaders of the West African Nation (Nigeria) and was expected to depart from Accra to Lagos on Monday, February 12,2024.

Liberia and Liberians cannot afford another government that operates in the dark. The people have a right to know what their government is doing at all times. Failure on the government to do this will lead to more speculations which is not good for any civilized but vulnerable society.
PRESIDENT BOAKAI and his Unity Party led government must understand that these little inconsistences and conflicting accounts of public functions give rise to distrusts. Previous governments were held under the microscope for similar issues now showing face in the current government.

PRESIDENT BOAKAI WAS CLEAR IN HIS inaugural message that he would restore transparency and accountability to government – and we will hold him to that.

SAID PRESIDENT BOAKAI: “Let us now recalibrate, let us “restore the years the locusts have eaten” by accentuating the positive about our country and about our fellow citizens. As we think, love, and build Liberia, let us take this state of mind to the business of national healing and reconciliation, both the old and new emerging social cleavages. Let us restore inclusivity, transparency, and accountability to governance at all levels of our society, including government. We must discourage the culture of unfinished business, doing things in a haphazard and unserious manner. We must restore hope to ourselves, individually, and as a collectivity. We must also restore dignity and integrity to public service – livable remuneration and pension schemes to civil servants and foreign service government workers. We must restore respect for the rule of law, and respect for officers of the law across our three branches of government.”

IT IS TIME THE PRESIDENT do what he says he would do and lead by the examples he professed on the campaign trail.

LIBERIA CANNOT AFFORD another government that operates in the dark. The people must know what their government is doing at all times. Failure on the government to do this will lead to more speculations which is not good for any civilized but vulnerable society.

Monrovia – President Joseph Boakai has accepted with immediate effect the resignation of the recently confirmed Minister of National Defense, Prince C. Johnson.

In a statement issued in Monrovia Monday, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, said he has received and accepted a letter of resignation from Johnson.

Johnson, in a statement viewed by FrontPageAfrica says he is stepping down for the common good of the country and the institution he has served for the past 18 years. He wants to make sure discipline is instilled in the army and any allegation of him misusing funds is totally false.

Earlier, the U.S. Embassy issued a statement that it was aware of ongoing protests by AFL spouses and the forced closure of major roads throughout greater Monrovia. “While the U.S. Embassy supports the right to peaceful protest, blockading roads and impeding the movement of Liberian citizens is disruptive and counterproductive. This is contrary to the respect of democracy and rule of law. We call on all parties to come together for a peaceful resolution and dialogue.”

Johnson’s resignation comes as the Boakai administration was forced to call off the annual Armed Forces Day celebration. The Proclamation of the day is in consonance with an Act of National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia, declaring the 11th day of February of each year as Armed Forces Day to be observed as a National Holiday.

On the eve of the day, President Joseph Boakai, issued a directive for a scaled-back observance. The President’s call for reduced activities comes amidst ongoing protests from the wives and widows of Armed Forces personnel. They have urged President Boakai to reconsider his nomination of the former Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. (Retired) Prince C. Johnson III as Minister of Defense. For the past two days, the women have carried out protests, blocking the main route leading to the country’s only international airport and other major routes.

Monrovia – Vice President Jeremiah Koung has categorically denied reports Sunday that he flew out of Monrovia Saturday afternoon on a private plane.

The Vice President’s office posted photographs with the seal of his office boarding an Accra-Bound private plane.

The VP explained that he was on his way to Nigeria where he is representing President Joseph Boakai to attend the Bayesla State Governor Inauguration.

The flying of private was a major issue during the administration of former President George Weah, who reportedly spent More than US2million on Private jet during his presidency.
The VP acknowledged that he had run into Ghanaian billionaire businessman Mahama at a local hotel and mentioned that he was on his way to Nigeria and the Ghanaian millionaire offered him a ride to Accra, from where he departed for Nigeria on Monday.

The VP’s office later reported that he is being accompanied by Mr. Morley P. Kamara, Senior Economic Adviser to the President and they are expected to meet several leaders while on the trip.

Article 90 (b) of the constitution prohibits public officials and servants from directly or indirectly demanding or receiving special privileges or benefits for what they do.

The Code of Conduct forbids officials from receiving gifts of more than US$200. The Act states: “No person holding public office shall demand and receive any other perquisites, emoluments or benefits, directly or indirectly, on account of any duty required by Government. c) The Legislature shall, in pursuance of the above provision, prescribe a Code of Conduct for all public officials and employees; stipulating the acts which constitute conflict of interest or are against public policy, and the penalties for violation thereof.”

Source:IPNEWS:

Unofficial results from Maryland County, Pleebo District No. 2, says youthful Anthony F. Williams, of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) has finally defeated former House Speaker Bhofal Chambers, of the former ruling CDC with a margin of 549 votes.

According to the report from Old Sodokan, Pleebo, Maryland County, says at Polling Place No. 1, Bhofal Chambers received a total of 75 votes, while Anthony F. Williams of 350 votes.

At polling place No. 2, Anothony Williams received 321 votes, while Chambers received a total of 47 votes, bringing the total votes counted to 763 votes.

It may be recalled, prior to this rerun, former House Speaker, Bhofal Chambers suffered a major headache ahead of vote recount in the controversial between he and Anthony Williams, of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) in Old Sodoken, Pleebo District Maryland County, following the arrest of Harper City Mayor Mechizedeck Toe.

According to a dispatch from Harper, Maryland county, Toe who is one of Chambers’ major campaigners alongside other accomplices, Reed H. Harmon and Hodo Bedell, were arrested and charged after Police preliminary investigation determined both that Reed and Hodo were spotted stealing voter’s cards, and subsequent transmission to Mayor Toe.

Recently Namu Johnson 38 and Anthony Nyema 35 alarmed over the disappearance of their voter’s card to the police attachment in Harper, Maryland county, leading to the retrieval of their voter’s card from the two suspects.

Following thorough police investigation, Mayor of Harper, Mechizedeck Toe, Reed H. Harmon and Hodo Bedell have been charged with Theft/Criminal conspiracy and criminal facilitation, and are now in Police Custody in Harper, awaiting court trial.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission will today Friday, January 19, 2024, conduct a re-count in 70 polling places in Electoral District Number Four in Nimba County.
A release from NEC, states that the re-count in Nimba County is based on a mandate from the Supreme Court of Liberia.

The release noted that an 18-member team of technicians from the headquarters of the commission has been deployed to assist the Magistrate to conduct the re-count in Nimba County.

In a related development, the National Elections Commission has announced that it will conduct a re-run in Electoral District #2, with Precinct Code 27020, in Old Sodaken Town Hall, Maryland County on Friday, 25 January 2024.

It noted that the campaign for the re-run in Old Sodaken Town Hall Precinct, in Maryland County begins Wednesday, January 17 and will end Wednesday, January 23, 2024.

NEC is at the same time inviting all stakeholders, including political parties, local and international observers and the media to witness both the recount in Nimba and to observe the re-run in Maryland counties.’

In December 2023, supporters of Pleebo Sodoken District #2 Representative-elect, Anthony Williams were happy after the National Elections Commission (NEC) declared their candidate victorious over former Representative Bhofal Chambers who earlier complained of dissatisfaction during the October 10, 2023, elections.

During the ruling today at the headquarters of the NEC, it was declared that Representative Chambers complain against Williams had to legal basis.

It may be recalled, contrary to reports from Maryland County about several persons being wounded in rival clashes and ballot boxes seized by Country Devil in the county, the authoritative Independent Probe Newspaper, investigative team has established that there was no incident of ballot boxes seizure by Country Devil in the Old Sodoken communities of Pleebo Sodoken District.

Cross-section of Elders and Youths spoken to in Old Sodoken, explained that the community which hosted the polling precinct of the National Elections Commission (NEC) ‘Mission Town’ is a secret traditional place that does not allow Country Devil.

According to an Elder of the town (anonymous) stated that ‘Mensanwloh, Mission town’- (Grebo vernacular), especially the ‘Bea’ Town Hall, does not allow Country Devil entry based on tradition, in that, this town hall is also used by other citizens of the Mensanwloh, Mission Town for Church Services.

“In mesielo, Nation Town, we do not allow Country Devil in this town. Our people are peace-loving people and nobody should be telling you that we put the country devil outside. We put Country Devil outside for what?” The Elder question.

According to a previous report in Old Sodoken, Pleeboc District, the violence erupted following the tally process of ballot papers in Maryland County after the closure of voting on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

The reports further stated that clashes left several persons wounded in Old Sodoken at a precinct comprising two polling places. Polling staffs and poll watchers from different political parties including NEC officials reportedly fleeing the scene abandoning ballot boxes due to the appearance of a ‘Country Devil.’

Contrary to this report also, several persons including a NEC staff (anonymous over growing life-threats), told IPNEWS that all six ballot boxes at the two precincts are in the possession of the National Election Elections Maryland County Magistrate custody with proper records filed with the National Headquarters of NEC, duly marked and parties and candidate’s representatives signing thereto respectively.

“This report of country Devil invading Old Sodoken is sickening and shows the insecurity of some of our leaders. How can you say ballot boxes we seized by the Country Devil and NEC has all the records with all those parties and candidates representatives signing on this? This wrong for the image of our tradition!”

“Look this is just a mere propaganda to buy time. As you can see, NEC posted all the results here in this very Bea’ Town Hall before leaving. No devil brought any ballot box outside to stuffed. As for the report of town chief coming in the polling center to pre-marked ballot papers is unacceptable. How could NEC allow a town chief to enter the polling station and begin marking ballots for the town people? This is a well-crafted propaganda which is not good for our country.” An anonymous NEC staff narrated to IPNEWS.

Since the October 10 presidential and legislative elections, Sodoken district has garnered attention for the wrong reasons due to allegations of ballot stuffing, including an incident where traditional chiefs allegedly used a country devil to take control of ballot boxes at a particular polling center.

Chambers has represented Maryland District #2 since 2006, but his quest for a fourth six-year term has been brutally resisted by Mr. Williams, a young former student leader.

Following the NEC’s announcement of poll results from the district, Chambers filed a complaint demanding a rerun of the election in some parts of his district, alleging ballot stuffing and interference by traditional leaders. Chambers’ legal team said it has evidence to support their claims.

In light of the evidence Chambers’ legal team claimed to have, IPNEWS investigation points to a harmless error from the records of count as part of NEC’s filling process which cannot overturn the NEC’s pronouncement of Pleebo Sodoken District presumptive winner Anthony F. Williams as winner.

According to sources close to NEC, the copy being circulated by Chambers from polling precinct #27020 is the actual copy of the record of count signed by Chambers’ representative Joseph Huge, indicates log of records/data from various rooms within the election center which accounts for number of ballots used, damaged ballots, etc. However, data from the other polling room was mixed up with data from another room which does not have anything to do with number of votes for a candidate because it does not interfere with any candidate vote (harmless error).

Another issue that may suffered Chambers chances is the inclusion of Gbololu polling precinct in their complaint submission before the supreme court of Liberia.
