Reports of Graduation Fees Hiking by Schools

As the new school year approaches in Monrovia, parents and students are frustrated by sudden increases in graduation fees and tuition at several schools, despite government regulations capping these fees.

According to multiple sources, schools like Best Brains Academy and John Lewis Morris United Methodist Schools and many others have raised graduation fees to over US$200, far exceeding the government-mandated limits of L$5,000 for public schools and US$100 for private schools.

The Ministry of Education has warned that schools violating these guidelines will face penalties, including fines or closure. Parents and students are calling on the government to enforce the regulations and ensure education remains affordable.

Hope MoE and the authorities follow up these kind of reports and provide appropriate actions where applicable.

Education Ministry Announces 2024 School Reopening and Major Initiatives

Monrovia, Liberia – The Ministry of Education, led by Minister Jarso Jallah, has announced the official registration and reopening dates for all schools across Liberia.

Registration was scheduled to have started on August 1 and will run until August 31, 2024, with classes set to officially resume on September 2, 2024.

Minister Jallah emphasized the Ministry's commitment to the ARREST agenda, particularly Pillar 3: Human Capacity Development.

This section of the agenda highlights the Ministry’s plans to increase primary school enrollment by 20% and reduce the number of out-of-school children by 40%.

In line with these goals, the Ministry will launch a nationwide Enrollment Drive Campaign, themed "Back to My Classroom," on August 9, 2024, at 12:00 pm.

The initial focus of the campaign will be on seven counties—Gbarpolu, Bomi, Grand Bassa, Rivercess, River Gee, Grand Gedeh, and Sinoe—where school enrollment was notably low during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Minister Jallah disclosed that the initiative will be an annual event, with plans to expand progressively to all counties in Liberia.

A national enrollment drive committee, consisting of various education stakeholders, has been established to ensure the success of this exercise annually.

"Our goal is to ensure that every child in Liberia has access to educational opportunities," Minister Jallah stated.

Regarding school operations, the Ministry of Education will maintain the current process for obtaining operational permits.

The annual permit fee for schools will be equivalent to the tuition fee charged for one student.

The Department of Instruction, under the leadership of the Deputy Minister of Instruction, remains solely responsible for managing the permitting process.

In another significant move, the Ministry has initiated steps towards implementing a National Youth Service Program.

This program, aimed at instilling values of service, responsibility, patriotism, and national pride in the youth, will focus on their growth and development, emphasizing nationalism, civic responsibility, and providing them with skills and opportunities for future success.

The program is being spearheaded by Student Personnel Services, led by Assistant Minister Sona Traore Sesay.

Additionally, the Ministry will launch a nationwide volunteer teacher and staff profiling exercise from August 12 to August 31.

This initiative is aimed at ensuring that educators across Liberia’s public school system are properly credentialed and equipped with the necessary skills to deliver quality education.

The profiling will include a registration process and verification of credentials, leading to a comprehensive nationwide registry of volunteer teachers and staff.

The first phase of skill assessment will commence following the profiling exercise, with a detailed schedule of events to be released soon.

Minister Jallah reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to professionalizing and enhancing Liberia's education system, stating, "These initiatives reflect our dedication to providing quality education for all and fostering the growth and development of our youth. We look forward to a successful academic year and the positive impact these changes will bring to our education system."
