The Minister of Finance Development and Planning, Boima Kamara, now faces potential incarceration over contempt charge as the House of Representatives has summoned him to appear before them on Tuesday.

The Plenary has requested the Minister to provide evidence to justify why he should not be held in contempt for impeding the work of the legislative body, but again Thursday he refused to show up; something the legislative body has termed as disrespectful thereby charging him with contempt.

During Thursday’s session, the House invoked its Contempt Power as outlined in rule four, citing actions that obstruct legislative function as grounds for contempt.

According to the House’s Rules and Procedures, the Finance Minister failure to appear for the fourth time triggered him punishment for contempt which can include a fine of up to LD$5,000 or imprisonment for up to one month, or the duration of the current session of the House. The decisions made in contempt cases are not subject to appeal.

Minister Kamara, along with officials from the Liberia Revenue Authority, Internal Affairs, and Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, were invited to provide financial updates on consolidated accounts and bank balances, and validate reports from the Liberia Revenue Authority on revenue collection.

While all other parties have cooperated, the failure of the Ministry of Finance to appear has been considered contemptuous.

Residents of Grand Kru County Raise Concerns Over Deteriorating Road Conditions

In light of the ongoing debate surrounding the 285 Earth Moving Equipment intended to connect feeder roads nationwide, citizens of Grand Kru County have raised alarms about the worsening road conditions and the deplorable state of wooden bridges in the Southeastern Region.

Francis Choloplay, a prominent resident of Chehgbatee, spoke to newsmen about the serious developmental and economic setbacks caused by the poor road conditions. He emphasized that the road between Buah Geeken and Greenville has become nearly impassable for vehicles and citizens alike.

"Traveling on this road has become a daily struggle for residents. It not only damages vehicles but also poses significant risks to our safety," lamented Choloplay. He stressed that improving this infrastructure is crucial for the socio-economic development of the region and for enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

According to reports residents have highlighted the neglect of bridges along the Karkakpoh, Sinoe County, and Geeken, Grand Kru route. Many of these bridges have been in disrepair for decades, with some collapsing entirely and cutting off communities, thereby obstructing transportation between towns.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the current situation has sparked frustration and concern among the people of Chehgbatee. The poor condition of roads and bridges severely impacts their lives, hindering economic activities by limiting the transportation of goods and access to markets.

The residents of Chehgbatee are urgently calling on the Government of Liberia and relevant authorities to intervene. They are seeking immediate repairs and maintenance of the roads and bridges to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population in Buah, Forpoh, and Dorbor Districts.

Internal Rift in United Methodist Church Over Same-Sex Marriage Issue

The United Methodist Church is experiencing significant internal conflict over the acceptance of same-sex marriage, with Reverend Dr. Samuel Wilson clashing with Bishop Samuel Quire on the issue.

Reverend Dr. Samuel Wilson, Chair of the Ordained Board of the United Methodist Church Liberia Annual Conference, has accused Bishop Samuel Quire of unjustly dismissing key board members who are seeking clarity on the church's stance regarding same-sex marriage.

At a news conference on Wednesday in Monrovia, Dr. Wilson highlighted that the church has been grappling with the issue of ordaining homosexual pastors, district superintendents, and bishops, as well as allowing same-sex marriages, for over 50 years. He criticized Bishop Quire for allegedly misinforming the Church in Liberia about the decisions made by the General Conference and their annual conference.

Conversely, Bishop Samuel Quire, in a news conference on June 7, asserted that the United Methodist Church is not a gay church and urged members to continue seeking God in the right direction.

Four soldiers have been dismissed from active duty in the AFL after testing positive for narcotics while on official duty. This announcement came from the AFL Public Affairs office.

The soldiers discharged are First Lieutenant Abraham Dolo, Private First Class Kerkula Rocheforte, Private Essa Bility, and Staff Sergeant Mohammed Rogers.

First Lieutenant Dolo, assigned to the 23rd Infantry Brigade, tested positive for ma*****na. His dismissal followed an incident where a firearm under his control was used to shoot a 15-year-old boy at a drinking spot in the Baptist Seminary community in Paynesville.

Private First Class Kerkula Rocheforte, last assigned to the AFL Engineer Battalion in Gbarnga, B**g County, was found with 32 wraps of Kush in the barracks, leading to his discharge.

Private Essa Bility, from the Armed Forces Training Command, tested positive for four illegal substances, including co***ne and ma*****na.

Staff Sergeant Mohammed Rogers was discharged in accordance with Section 7.7(j) of the National Defense Act of 2008.

Kenya Protests Turn Deadly Amid Tax Dispute

Protests in Kenya against new tax proposals escalated on Tuesday, resulting in multiple fatalities.

In a Tuesday evening address, President William Ruto vowed to use all necessary means to "thwart any attempts by dangerous criminals to undermine the security and stability of our country." Consequently, he has deployed the military to suppress the protests.

Wanjeri Nderu, the Kenyan president of the International Society for Human Rights, witnessed the protests. "What happened yesterday was unnecessary, it was uncalled for, it was painful to see. Nobody deserved to die," she stated.

Nderu urged the president to de-escalate the situation. "What we need to do right now is ask the president to ask his security to stand down. Kenyans are not his enemy. People are suffering. His statement yesterday was scary."

House of Representatives to Investigate Firestone Liberia Inc.

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into Firestone Liberia Inc., following concerns raised by Hon. Ivar K. Jones of Margibi County Electoral District 2. This probe focuses on possible breaches of the company's concession agreement with the Liberian government, particularly regarding employment, education, and healthcare provisions.

Hon. Jones brought forward issues indicating Firestone Liberia's potential non-compliance with the 2008 Amended and Restated Concession Agreement. He emphasized Section 9 of the agreement, which obligates the company to provide free medical care to its employees and their families. Allegations suggest that Firestone Liberia has not met this requirement, instead billing tapping contractor firms for medical services and restricting the number of eligible dependents.

In response to these allegations, the House convened on Tuesday, June 25, and assigned its Committees on Investment & Concession, Labor, Good Governance, and Judiciary to conduct an in-depth investigation. These committees will summon Firestone Liberia’s management, the Minister of Labor, and the Director General of the National Bureau of Concessions to present their explanations and evidence.

"The integrity of concession agreements and the welfare of Liberian workers are paramount concerns for our legislature," said Hon. Jones, Speaker of the House of Representatives. "We take these allegations seriously and will ensure a transparent and fair investigation process."

The Committees will review the evidence and report their findings to the House plenary. Depending on the outcome, the House will consider legislative actions to address any violations and protect the rights and benefits of Liberian workers.

Sinoe County is set to receive a significant $35.7 million investment from the African Project Group (AGP), a UK-based oil palm company, specifically benefiting electoral District #3.

This substantial investment was secured by Representative Alex S Noah of District #3 during a diplomatic visit to Ethiopia. While there, he engaged in productive discussions with UK investors, leading to a shared vision for a venture aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for the district's residents.

Rep. Noah revealed that the project will unfold in three phases. The initial phase will focus on signing the concession agreement between the district's residents and the company's owners, clearing land, and constructing camps and schools.

The project is slated to begin in early August 2024.

Rep. Noah expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to significantly benefit the people of Sinoe County's electoral District #3 by creating job opportunities and stimulating the local economy. He also stressed the importance of executing the project in an environmentally responsible manner.

LEC currently provides electricity to 280,000 customers across Monserrado, Margibi, Bomi, and Grand Cape Mount Counties. To combat these losses and improve its services, LEC has secured substantial funding for new projects.

The World Bank has provided $96 million for the construction of a solar power plant. Additionally, LEC has obtained $300 million for a combined solar and hydroelectric project, valued at $500 million. This initiative aims to ensure consistent power supply during both dry and rainy seasons.

The National Port Authority (NPA) has reported a significant contribution of $2 million to the national revenue over the past six months. During a press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) on Tuesday, NPA Managing Director Sekou Dukuly highlighted this achievement.

Mr. Dukuly pointed out that this six-month contribution surpasses the total of $4 million the NPA contributed during the entire six-year tenure of the previous administration under President George Weah.

Additionally, Mr. Dukuly accused former NPA Managing Director Bill Tweahway, now a Senator for River Cess County, of failing to remit collected social security fees and personal income taxes from NPA employees to the government during his term.

Liberia National Police Suspends Two Officers for One Month Without Pay

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has suspended two officers, Patrolmen Teddy Boulner (ID # 6351) and Gabriel Flomo (ID # 6017), for riding a motorbike without helmets. Boulner is assigned to the Zone Five Base Police Station, while Flomo is with the Lofa County Detachment.

A release from the LNP on Monday stated that the officers’ actions violated Section 6.1.3 "Abuse of Authority" and Section 6.4(a) "Disobeying Lawful Orders," as outlined in the Administrative Instructions on Discipline and Professional Standards.

During their one-month suspension, which takes effect immediately, the officers will not receive their salaries. They have also been ordered to return all government-issued items, including badges, uniforms, ID cards, and boots. Additionally, they must not identify themselves with the LNP to prevent further embarrassment to the force.

The LNP has warned all other officers to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations, emphasizing that any violations will be met with appropriate disciplinary actions.

The Liberia National Police has arrested a former Executive Protection Service (EPS) officer known as James Kelley for reportedly being in possession of a firearm. James arrest came a few minutes after he alleged on Voice of Liberia that he and many of his colleagues were dismissed wrongly by the current EPS boss, Sam Gaye. It is reported that an eighteen-year-old man named Abel Fokpah has allegedly been accused of killing a twenty-four-year-old man identified as Franklin Darkor, commonly known as DADA by his friends and family. Abel Fokpah told reporters that he was involved in a fight with Franklin Darkor on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 2:30 AM during a wake in Bassa Town, District #4, Margibi County. He admitted to stabbing Franklin Darkor with scissors on his arm but denied killing him, suggesting it might have been his three friends who were also present at the wake. The three boys, along with Abel Fokpah, were arrested by the Liberia National Police (LNP) detachment in Weala, District #5, Margibi County. They were subsequently transferred to the Kakata Police Depot in Kakata City, Margibi County, for further investigation pending court trial.
