MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Montserrado County District #9 Representative Frank Saah Foko, Jr. has raised serious concerns about the misuse of over US$365,000 designated for inaugural celebrations across 73 districts.
Representative Foko expressed dismay as he disclosed that despite rejecting a $5,000 offer for District #9, the controversies surrounding the funds have now become overwhelming.
The funds, overseen by the Unity Party Inaugural Committee, are alleged to have been used exclusively for partisans of the Unity Party, raising questions about the nationalistic intent of the inaugural celebrations. Reports from District #9 indicate that the $5,000 allocated for the celebration was reportedly stolen, leading to no ceremony in the district.
Similar incidents were reported in Nimba and other locations, where ceremonies were either non-existent or disrupted. FrontPage Africa's research revealed that the Unity Party Chairman requested a deduction of $1,000 from each district.
Representative Foko called for a thorough investigation by government agencies responsible for improprieties, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. He urged the Unity Party Inaugural Committee to clarify the overall usage and proceedings of the inauguration funds to address the growing controversies.
Expressing concern for the state of Liberia under the Unity Party Government, Representative Foko declared, "Under twelve years of UP stewardship, Liberians still carry the scars of misappropriation, corruption, and poverty, and we can't continue by doing the same, especially this early."
In the coming days, the District #9 lawmaker pledged to elevate the discussion among colleagues to ensure accountability and prevent a continuation of alleged misappropriation during the early days of the Unity Party Government. He affirmed the commitment to the check and balances essential for the well-being of the Liberian people, declaring, "We are committed to the check and balances that we were called to do by our people; no turning back."
