The plenary of the House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Health to thoroughly investigate the Ministry of Health over the availability of rabies Vaccine in the Country.

The Houseโ€™s decision was triggered by a communication emanating from Montserrado County Electoral District 5 Representative Hon. Prescilla Abram Copper in which she told plenary that the prevalence of dog bites and risk of rabies transmission which poses a significant threat to public health and safety in Liberia, as a Representative she was concern and urged her colleagues to take immediate action by summoning the Minister of Health, Dr. Louise Kpoto, to address the urgent need for effective mechanisms to ensure access to rabies vaccines for all individuals in Liberia.

The Montserrado lawmaker stated in her communication that Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal, most commonly dogs. Without timely access to rabies vaccines, individuals who have been bitten by rabid animal are risks of developing the disease, which has a high fatality rate if left untreated it is essential that the Ministry of Health takes proactive measures to ensure the availability of rabies vaccines and promote awareness about the importance of seeking medical care following a dog bite.

Following the reading of the communication and debate, plenary took a decision to have its committee on Health probe the Ministry of Health and at the same time during the hearings the ministry should also create a mechanism for treatment or vaccination of all dogs instead of just preventing.

The reaffirmation was made during a press conference held after an emergency meeting by the National Executive Council at the party headquarters in Paynesville over the weekend.

Addressing the press, representatives from the Youth League, Women League, and various county chapters expressed their unanimous commitment to both the CDC and Ambassador Kemeya.

This follows a controversial incident on June 4, 2024, when some party members dismissed Kemeya as the political leader and withdrew the partyโ€™s support from the CDC. A move which was said not recognized by the broader party membership and executive committee.

During the press conference, it was announced that members Mr. Matthew Shine, Jeremiah Paye, Patrick Karmo, and Cassiell Harris have been expelled from the party, accusing them of instigating violence and falsifying signatures of executive committee members during an unauthorized press conference.

The party leaders also used the occasion to name replacements for the expelled members, ensuring that the party's operations and political strategy remain uninterrupted.
