Hon. Banks receives NEC Certificate as GRAND BASSA Lawmaker Ahead of INAUGURATION
LIBERIA, JANUARY 19, 2024)—Following legal electoral battle at the Supreme Court, the National Elections Commission of Liberia has finally certificated Hon. Clarence T. Banks as winner of the 2023 Elections in Grand Bassa Electoral District Two.
The Thursday, January 18 ceremony was triggered by ruling from the Supreme Court of Liberia that rendered incumbent Representative Mary M. Karwor’s complaint non-substantive to overturn the outcome of the District Election as was prayed for by the CDC female candidate.
The Supreme Court’ Wednesday, January 17 Ruling upheld the Result that declared Hon. Banks winner of the October 10 Elections on account that there was no electoral malpractice contrary to the claim of Hon. Mary Karwor, thus making her a former Lawmaker of the 54th National Legislature.
The legal argument prevented Hon. Banks from being formally part of Legislative functions including Oath of Office, Speaker and Deputy Speaker’ Elections as well as other recent legislative activities since the kickoff of the 55th National Legislature.
The legal pursuit begun at the Local Office of the National Elections Commission with Hearing Officer’s involvement upward to the Board of Commissioners prior to the Supreme Court’s probe and subsequent Ruling.
The newly certified Electoral District two Representative, Clarence Banks democratically retired the Female Legislator who was pursuing a third term GOAL after serving from 2011 to 2023 [12 years].
Mary Karwor is the wife of Liberia’s Traditional Council of Chiefs and Elders Chairman, Zanzan Karwor who is also expected to be replaced under the Unity Party’s Administration after serving as Leader of the Council for over 18 years under three Presidents.
As it stands, the certification of Clarence T. Banks as Representative paves the way for his immediate participation into ongoing legislative functions ahead of the January 22 Inauguration of Hon. Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr and Senator Jeremiah Kpan Koung as President and Vice President of the Republic of Liberia on Monday; a ceremony that will be hosted on the grounds of the Capitol Building.
