First Bishop of Rev.Fr.Joseph Van Reeth was on a mission to set up educational institutes in his newly formed diocese in Southern part of . After setting up St. Aloysius' College-Galle(1895) and Sacred Heart Convent {Galle}(1896) he wanted to establish another institute in Matara. He called upon the priests from Belgium who arrived in the Island in 1896 and Rev.Fr.Augusts Standaert along with rest of the priests on 2nd of November 1897 established an English medium school with 05 students on a small plot of land on the banks of the Nilwala River in Pallimulla, Matara.

By 1898 school had 54 students and constructions began with funds received from St.Servatius Jesuit school of Liège, Belgium for a new building to house students. School adopted the name of the patron saint of the benefactor and called it St. Servatius College Matara and Rev. Fr. Augusts Standaert became its first principal (1897-1901). In 1906, school shifted to its present location in Kotuwegoda, Matara.

School since then has excelled in studies and sports whilst Servatians shining bright as a beacon from the southern tip of the Island gaining a name for their Alma mater and nation by following their ‘Be a Man’. One such personality stands out; master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya
