Returning to work after 8 week holiday?

Yes, some may have worked from home and some may have had an uninterrupted vacation. Whichever the case, we all have to understand that COVID-19 vacation is almost over. By saying so, I meant 2 months of no work seems to be what an economy can take at best. People who were arguing countries should be locked-down until the disease is eradicated or a reliable vaccine is authorized, are now seeking to sneak for some work hours.

A 10-hour work day, 4 hours stuck in traffic, 2 hours of facebooking and 6 hours of sleep fill up pretty much your average day. This only leaves us with 2 hours to be spent for our own capacity building, reading, studying, writing or spend with your loved ones. Oh, wait! you might not have those 2 hours too – yes, dinner outs with clients, night shifts 5 days a week.

Is this really the life we wanted to grow up to so eagerly 15 years back?

Gyms are fully crowded, walking paths, swimming pools, sports centres are crammed up in early part of every year. People make plans; they make plans to build new habits to their lives. Had they been successful doing so, the same crowd could have been expected in February or June or October as well. But do we see such overwhelming set of people in gyms during those times or for that matter fitness centres may have hit the drought even now (yes, it’s just less than two weeks to start of the year)?

Check out how we can inject Self Discipline and develop new habits to achieve the newly set goals!

Needless to say – all of us go through rough patches in our lives, not occasionally but regularly – most of us have difficulties, rough times for breakfast. That’s how frequent we experience bad times. Average person faces most challenging times in ages between 25 -33; it’s not magic considering how unstable you are at that age. Some might have just graduated, some might be looking for a degree, seeking for scholarships, finding a job, getting married, having their first kid, building their house, stuck with mortgage.
Those are just few common situations most of us might encounter at our so called ‘figuring out age’. Even though these situations can be generalized, the cycle which we endure these cannot really be limited with a specific tenure. Meaning, no one can say you will get over the anxiety of stuck with mortgage in 18 months – just hold on. In simple terms, timelines are different – timelines are so way different from one person to another. Results of course can also be different depending on how we put up with these difficult times.

So can one say – higher the risk so the returns or fortune favors the brave. Strategy to deal with these midlife crisis as one may call it, is known by ‘No One’. Yes you read it correctly, ‘NO ONE’. There will be pundits who could tell stories to fill 1001 nights, but it’s them who would know what they went through and it’s you who has to figure out the climax of your story. Because that hasn’t even started unreeling yet.

Facing each day separately is the strategy; crossing the bridge when comes to it is the strategy; facing each challenge and not giving up is the strategy – as my Grand Parents would say ‘Patience’ is the ultimate strategy. That’s the basic rule of the game, the one who runs out the patience first, looses.
Keep your head high and play the game and do not forget to Enjoy the View too. Because that view is the journey you take and that’s what creates you stories to fill Arabian Nights – one of your own heroic stories.

At the start of a new year, a new month, a long weekend it’s normal that we all get busy with making our plans for the coming year both in our career and personal life. We have made set of goals to go for that next promotion, continue or restart higher education, preparing for marriage, buy a vehicle, build our dream house, planning for a baby, planning to migrate, plans to travel around the world etc. And yes it’s such a good start we all are going to have in this year thanking to a strong foundation laid so many years ago by those seen gods in your life. Of course, those are none other than your loving parents.

For most of us, first day at work in 2020 will be today or is the proper start of work for the year as 1st Jan was filled with celebrations, treats and wishes. Some may have gone to office last few days also but many are going to office after a long spent holidays. You may travelled around the country, been overseas for vacation or stayed home peacefully reading books and watching Kids Movies. Like it or not, the holidays are over and we need our focus shifted to work –AGAIN–.

01/01/2020

You know it’s gonna be the same old story when an article starts as ‘work life balance’ and ‘time management’. All of those speak about the same set of problems we try to figure out how to overcome everyday. Common factor about these problems is that these are general to everyone; it doesn’t matter if you are still a student, just started working, at the mid in your career, an entrepreneur or an academic.

In your life, you may have at least read one article (let it be online or newspaper), watched a single a video (a movie or a Youtube short video), listened to a speech (live or Youtube), attended a training session on one of those concepts of work-life balance or acquiring time management skills. We all accept that there are more than enough materials and resources available covering a plethora of areas in these concepts, so what is the real reason behind we trying to acquire these skills? Why are we all looking for those sessions or hunt for a seat on those training/ workshops? Why our companies are sending us for those programs?

The true reason is the life we are living now and our busy schedules as children, as parents, as a brother or sister, as employees, as entrepreneurs and also with many roles we play within the 24 hours. Some succeed through-out the whole journey while some fail in most. And many of us are in between with so many ups and downs. First point to remember; there is no one who gets bonus points for their 24 hours. Second is that, everyone has their unique life with their own duties and responsibilities.

Then what should we do?

No one or very little will succeed if they try to copy others’ way of life. Therefore, it’s you who has to create your own system which can make your loved ones happy, while creating your financial stability, achieving those monetary goals and succeeding in all other social causes. No one can do it on behalf of you – not even your parents, your spouse or your children, your best-est friends or even your workplace can make it happen. But of course, they will play a critical role when you are articulating your life’s actions. And, make sure they all are around, because your success means nothing, if they are not around you to celebrate it at the end of the day. Even though you achieve those goals, having your closest and loved ones around makes you stronger and set harder challenges for your next phase. They may not tell you everyday how much they want you, or how much they value your presence around them, but they live with a hope that you will make them feel precious.

And here are some tips for you to re-look at your life and make it an awesome journey keeping your loved ones beside you.

1.Place matters! – it’s true we spend 1/3 of our time at office and another 1/3 to travel & for other work related things. And also it’s true that it’s not easy to draw a sharp line between these two places. We may get a call from office even once we come home, we may still have to complete an excel file, make a presentation for tomorrow’s meeting. So for you it’s always better to work long hours at office and finish it off, isn’t it ? But ask yourself always; is there anyone at home missing me? Waiting till I come home? If the answer is “Yes”, don’t think twice to leave office on time (other than an unavoidable reason) and keep your loved ones closer to you and complete what’s pending.

Of course, they will blame you for taking work to home, but in silently they will enjoy your presence at least. But don’t make it a habit to take your work home, if it’s not that urgent, keep it on your table and come home.

2.Home is not yet digital! – They love when you speak, no matter its harsh or with full of love. Sometimes hearing your words itself make them happy, responding to their queries itself make them comfortable. So try to come out of your digital world for 3-4 hours at least which is the only time you have, to be with your loved ones in this life other than your sleeping time. In total it’s just 85,000 hrs you have for them (Yes, that’s less than 10 years).

3.Have family dinners! – You don’t need to spend for thousands rupees to take them for dinner outings. But you can still make food at home together and enjoy your dinner with them and make it a habbit always for your children too! Why dinner is because you have very limited opportunities for family lunch! Do it once and see how much love, care, affection you will share with each other. If not, very soon taking family dinner at home will come as a rare moment in our lives. Don’t let it happen, please!

4.Make them healthy – Taking them to doctor is not what you have to do, but spend some quality time to make them healthy in terms of their physical and psychological fitness. They will really love when you do so.

5.Attend for family work – You can be a busy person of course. But for some, you are the whole world, your presence is the best thing that can be happen. It’s all about prioritizing! Let it be your parent’s, brother’s, wife’s, child’s b’day; or parent’s meeting at the preschool/ school.

6.Plan family trips – Being at work, you for sure are getting a time for trips, outings, parties etc., but what about being together with your family? How often do you go on a trip with your wife, children, parents or your closed family? You may be doing it couple of times a year, or let me bet that you don’t remember the last time you did so.

At least plan for two trips per year with your closest ones. Invite your friend’s families if you think they would fit in. But ensure you don’t make it an alcohol party – because it will lose the whole point of being with family. So, here we go, two trips per year the least and 4 nights. Though it would be ideal to fill the trip with all the luxury, it’s not about it at all – just make each second count.

7.Be home at least one day a week – Though it would be interesting to go for lunch outs on weekends, let me tell you, there’s no other place like home to bond with your family. Yes, it’s good to go for movies, lunches, dinners and travel-travel-travel, but spending some time at home, just four of you feels fantastic. Keep the mobile devices away – do some gardening or awaken the kid within you with your kids around. It’s time to do crazy stuff!

Like I mentioned at the start of this article, despite you being a student, an academic, a professional or an entrepreneur and how strongly positioned you are in the society, one thing you will not be able to do is ‘Time Travel’, especially to refine the regret you encounter for not caring for loved ones. What better time to start spending time with your loved ones, than a weekend – especially in this holiday season?

Living in a world filled with rat races of some kind – inevitably being participants of which, many of us have become tired of this competition. What’s wrong with us? Is there anything really wrong? Can we do something about it? If so, how can we start doing it? YES, you’re about to find-out

Wake-up in the morning – 6 or some may start the day at 5 or earlier, prepare ourselves for another hectic week cursing its Monday, go for work – spend good 90 to 120 minutes of angry time on the road trying to get there; sometimes we are on time and on other occasions we might be late. Hardly it turns into ‘early’ which in turn makes us realize that ‘I could’ve slept another 15 minutes’. Then we be spending most valuable 8-10 hours of the day, at work – making someone else rich. Day goes along – it’s already 5.30 and we rush home to be ourselves – yet again stuck on those mighty roads for good 1 1/2 hours. Angry? – yeah, yet again. Takes a bath – not a whirlpool bath – tired, yet hopeful, have dinner with the family – not much chatting though. Might be so tired that even the personal laptop is kept away – does some browsing through the newsfeed anddddd goes to sleep thinking of the work to be done next day – AND THIS REPEATS EVERYDAY and has become our routine more or less.

If we quit this rat race and stop for a second to really think about ourselves, what we’ve become; who we’ve become. Our answer might be, yes, I’ve always wanted this life or some would say ‘no never, I hate this competition’.

Doesn’t matter what your answer is, you’re reading this because you’ve fallen or exposed into the trap of rat race; social competition for most of your life.

Have we stood for others? Been someone’s voice? Shared our knowledge for not-for-money? Healed a seriously wouned person? We might have done maximum one, but surely not more. Sometimes the best idea comes-out when we’re feeding someone who is hungry-teaching a person who doesn’t have money to spend on studies; we understand the meaning of life while protecting someone we don’t care for-sacrificing everything for the beloved person of ours.

So never be too driven with your ultimate goals – get stuck at routine work so that you forget the real meaning of life – rather give it a shot; a moment of second thought – its never falling behind, its learning to enjoy the race.
