You know it’s gonna be the same old story when an article starts as ‘work life balance’ and ‘time management’. All of those speak about the same set of problems we try to figure out how to overcome everyday. Common factor about these problems is that these are general to everyone; it doesn’t matter if you are still a student, just started working, at the mid in your career, an entrepreneur or an academic.
In your life, you may have at least read one article (let it be online or newspaper), watched a single a video (a movie or a Youtube short video), listened to a speech (live or Youtube), attended a training session on one of those concepts of work-life balance or acquiring time management skills. We all accept that there are more than enough materials and resources available covering a plethora of areas in these concepts, so what is the real reason behind we trying to acquire these skills? Why are we all looking for those sessions or hunt for a seat on those training/ workshops? Why our companies are sending us for those programs?
The true reason is the life we are living now and our busy schedules as children, as parents, as a brother or sister, as employees, as entrepreneurs and also with many roles we play within the 24 hours. Some succeed through-out the whole journey while some fail in most. And many of us are in between with so many ups and downs. First point to remember; there is no one who gets bonus points for their 24 hours. Second is that, everyone has their unique life with their own duties and responsibilities.
Then what should we do?
No one or very little will succeed if they try to copy others’ way of life. Therefore, it’s you who has to create your own system which can make your loved ones happy, while creating your financial stability, achieving those monetary goals and succeeding in all other social causes. No one can do it on behalf of you – not even your parents, your spouse or your children, your best-est friends or even your workplace can make it happen. But of course, they will play a critical role when you are articulating your life’s actions. And, make sure they all are around, because your success means nothing, if they are not around you to celebrate it at the end of the day. Even though you achieve those goals, having your closest and loved ones around makes you stronger and set harder challenges for your next phase. They may not tell you everyday how much they want you, or how much they value your presence around them, but they live with a hope that you will make them feel precious.
And here are some tips for you to re-look at your life and make it an awesome journey keeping your loved ones beside you.
1.Place matters! – it’s true we spend 1/3 of our time at office and another 1/3 to travel & for other work related things. And also it’s true that it’s not easy to draw a sharp line between these two places. We may get a call from office even once we come home, we may still have to complete an excel file, make a presentation for tomorrow’s meeting. So for you it’s always better to work long hours at office and finish it off, isn’t it ? But ask yourself always; is there anyone at home missing me? Waiting till I come home? If the answer is “Yes”, don’t think twice to leave office on time (other than an unavoidable reason) and keep your loved ones closer to you and complete what’s pending.
Of course, they will blame you for taking work to home, but in silently they will enjoy your presence at least. But don’t make it a habit to take your work home, if it’s not that urgent, keep it on your table and come home.
2.Home is not yet digital! – They love when you speak, no matter its harsh or with full of love. Sometimes hearing your words itself make them happy, responding to their queries itself make them comfortable. So try to come out of your digital world for 3-4 hours at least which is the only time you have, to be with your loved ones in this life other than your sleeping time. In total it’s just 85,000 hrs you have for them (Yes, that’s less than 10 years).
3.Have family dinners! – You don’t need to spend for thousands rupees to take them for dinner outings. But you can still make food at home together and enjoy your dinner with them and make it a habbit always for your children too! Why dinner is because you have very limited opportunities for family lunch! Do it once and see how much love, care, affection you will share with each other. If not, very soon taking family dinner at home will come as a rare moment in our lives. Don’t let it happen, please!
4.Make them healthy – Taking them to doctor is not what you have to do, but spend some quality time to make them healthy in terms of their physical and psychological fitness. They will really love when you do so.
5.Attend for family work – You can be a busy person of course. But for some, you are the whole world, your presence is the best thing that can be happen. It’s all about prioritizing! Let it be your parent’s, brother’s, wife’s, child’s b’day; or parent’s meeting at the preschool/ school.
6.Plan family trips – Being at work, you for sure are getting a time for trips, outings, parties etc., but what about being together with your family? How often do you go on a trip with your wife, children, parents or your closed family? You may be doing it couple of times a year, or let me bet that you don’t remember the last time you did so.
At least plan for two trips per year with your closest ones. Invite your friend’s families if you think they would fit in. But ensure you don’t make it an alcohol party – because it will lose the whole point of being with family. So, here we go, two trips per year the least and 4 nights. Though it would be ideal to fill the trip with all the luxury, it’s not about it at all – just make each second count.
7.Be home at least one day a week – Though it would be interesting to go for lunch outs on weekends, let me tell you, there’s no other place like home to bond with your family. Yes, it’s good to go for movies, lunches, dinners and travel-travel-travel, but spending some time at home, just four of you feels fantastic. Keep the mobile devices away – do some gardening or awaken the kid within you with your kids around. It’s time to do crazy stuff!
Like I mentioned at the start of this article, despite you being a student, an academic, a professional or an entrepreneur and how strongly positioned you are in the society, one thing you will not be able to do is ‘Time Travel’, especially to refine the regret you encounter for not caring for loved ones. What better time to start spending time with your loved ones, than a weekend – especially in this holiday season?
