Lisa Jawahir, Communications Director of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), said the soon-to-be introduced minimum wage will alleviate suffering for thousands of workers.

Jawahir was reacting to Guy Joseph, Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), who said that the government's proposed minimum wage estimates are insufficient.
"Many of our families, thousands of people, do not earn $6.50.
And for individuals who make $700 or $600 per month, this minimum wage of $1,126 will be nearly double what they earn," noted SLP Communications Director Lisa Jawahir.

The proposed minimum wage is $6.50 per hour or $1126 per month, and the Minimum and Equal Wages Commission will accept comments and objections until June 6, 2024.

The minimum wage will be fully implemented on August 1 this year, directly benefiting an estimated 13,000 people.

The opposition UWP has expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed minimum wage, claiming that $1126 is insufficient.

Jawahir believes that, while not much, this proposed value is a solid starting point for creating a minimum wage.

"Of course, the government, through the Minimum Wage Review Committee, would have examined and conducted research in the formal sector to determine whether firms can afford to pay their employees more. "Things are so hard in our country, and this is only the beginning," she remarked.

This minimum wage is expected to benefit mostly retail, security, and hospitality jobs.
