Heman Bekele whipped up the most dangerous of what he called his “potions” when he was just over 7 years old.

Last October, the 3M company and Discovery Education selected Heman, a rising 10th-grader at Woodson High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, as the winner of its Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000.

His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. It may take years before such a product comes to market, but this summer Heman is already spending part of every weekday working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, hoping to bring his dream to fruition.

The co-founder of LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman, has gone viral on the internet with his prediction that typical 9-5 jobs will no longer exist by 2034. In a newly released video clip, Mr Hoffman gives an explanation of how he sees AI strongly disrupting today’s workforce, eliminating traditional job arrangements.

He feels that the future worker may not be necessarily employed but rather participate in the gig economy. It means you would be working with various companies in multiple sectors under contract. Compared to the more traditional positions, this way could mean lesser job security, even if it does give you greater flexibility and more options.

The Summer Olympics will return to a familiar landing spot in 2028 in Los Angeles, which will be hosting for the third time.

As is customary, the International Olympic Committee has green-lighted several new (and old) sports for 2028 and subtracted another from the program list that was featured in Paris.

The Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee proposed five optional sports: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. They were approved by the IOC in October 2023 as part of their policy of introducing Games-specific sports to maximize local interest and growth.

Lacrosse has not been an Olympic sport since 1908. Cricket was contested once, in Paris in 1900.

The 2024 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship came to a close on Sunday with League C hosts Aruba winning their category after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Saint Lucia.

Amaya Emmanuel continued her rampant ways, scoring her 11th goal for Saint Lucia in this competition. The young striker from Soufriere is also a talented table tennis player, not to mention a former goalkeeper, at the Under-10 level. But she has been banging them in for Soufriere and Saint Lucia over the past two years, having also had experience in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Girls’ Under-14 Challenge Series.

After Emmanuel’s goal in the 12th minute, however, the home team tied it up in the 27th as Adannayah Breinburg scored from a gorgeous long-range strike.

The “I Like It” rapper, 31, is pregnant and expecting her third baby, the singer confirmed on Instagram on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Cardi’s pregnancy announcement comes one day after she filed for divorce from husband Offset, 32, after six years of marriage.

In a remarkable Olympic debut, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred finished first in heat two of the opening round of the women’s 100M. Alfred clocked a time of 10.95 seconds, which comfortably secured her place in the semifinals.

Alfred, the reigning World Indoor 60M champion, has been widely regarded as a serious gold medal contender, especially following the withdrawal of Shericka Jackson from the 100M to focus on the 200M.

Her strong performance in the opening round has further solidified her status as one of the top competitors to watch.

Joining Alfred in the semifinals is the defending 100M world champion, Sha’Carri Richardson, who finished heat one with a time of 10.94 seconds.

The Court of Appeal just ruled that he and three co-accused should not be retried for murder.

Freedom, a day before Jamaica celebrates Emancipation Day, caps an almost 13-year journey of arrests, trial, convictions, and a successful appeal for Kartel and Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones.

Jones, however, will remain in custody because he is serving a sentence in an unrelated case.

The highly anticipated decision was delivered by newly minted President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop. She led a panel of three judges which comprised justices Paulette Williams and David Fraser.

The men were charged in September 2011 and convicted in March 2014 of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams’ murder. They were sentenced to life in prison in April 2014.

It was established in 2011 by the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF) and is recognized each year on July 24th as a symbol that the benefits of self-care are experienced 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
