SLHTA: strong 2024 performance to be tempered; members brace for slow season
The Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association (SLHTA) is highly encouraged by the strong performance of Saint Lucia’s tourism sector thus far in 2024.

The island has recorded month-on-month growth, every month for the first half of this year. The greatest increase was noted in the month of June, when the island welcomed 38,394 visitors to its shores, a 42% increase over June 2023.

The successful hosting of the Jazz & Arts Festival, Lucian Carnival and the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup, bolstered the local economy and generated substantial business for accommodation and tourism service providers.

The tourism industry is now moving into the annual slower season, which includes the months of September and October. The slow season is marked by a contraction in airlift and lower occupancy levels. This period is not unique to Saint Lucia but is also experienced by numerous islands in the region.

During this time contraction in staffing levels and layoffs are not unusual due to low occupancy and/or temporary closure.

Many hotels and villas make strategic use of the slower season to undertake important refurbishments and upgrades, ensuring they are well-prepared to continue delivering world class service in the upcoming peak season.

Seven SLHTA member hotels, with a total room stock of 1032, will be closed at some point during the slow season to carry out refurbishments. This accounts for 20% of the SLHTA member room stock. This will also have a consequential impact on tourism service providers (restaurants, transportation and tours etc).

Chamber reports productive meeting on Inland Revenue Department
On August 14th, 2024, the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce hosted a significant "Listening Session" with Mr. Trevor Brathwaite, former Comptroller of Inland Revenue and current Consultant to the Government of St. Lucia.

The session aimed to gather feedback from Chamber members on their experiences and interactions with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), as part of an ongoing review to enhance the department's service delivery.

During the meeting, Mr. Brathwaite shared insightful updates, including the Inland Revenue Department’s plans to migrate to a new software platform. This new system is expected to integrate property taxes, offering a more holistic and streamlined service to taxpayers. The proposed upgrade is part of the government's broader effort to modernize the department's operations and improve overall efficiency.

However, the session also brought to light several concerns from the business community.

Chamber members expressed frustrations regarding the ease of doing business with the IRD, citing instances where employees appeared to misplace documents, categorise filings with incorrect suffixes, lack sufficient training in new legislation or lack awareness of the appropriate contacts for specific matters.

This, they noted, often leads to inefficiencies within the department, which could potentially result in unnecessary audits for compliant taxpayers.

Another critical concern raised was the protection of taxpayer data, particularly when using the IRD’s online platforms. Members emphasized the importance of ensuring that the new software and existing systems safeguard sensitive information and maintain public trust.

Sign up now for September 4th & 5th Business Continuity Planning workshop
The St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce has organised a Business Continuity workshop slated for the 4th and 5th of September to ensure that its members are prepared to withstand the impacts of hurricanes or any adverse situations or natural disasters.

The Chamber believes developing a thorough Business Continuity Plan after conducting a disaster risk diagnosis and a risk assessment, remains a sure way of preparing and mitigating the many risks the modern business will face at some point in time.

Cyber Risks, biological risks and pandemic risks, are some of the more spoken about risks that one must consider in addition to that posed by weather, natural and climatic conditions. How do you ensure that your business will be able to recover in a multi hazard risk environment.

The two-day workshop will take account of how to conduct a thorough risk analysis of your business, and how to think through mitigation measures. It will offer hands on training in how to develop and review your firm’s BCP.
A tried and tested template will be provided to attendees, before the workshop, allowing in-firm discussion and pre workshop preparation. At the workshop there will then be systematic knowledge transfer to help build that plan.

The Business Continuity Planning workshop will be facilitated by Andrew George, Corporate Planning & Research Officer, Government of Saint Lucia and ISO Certified Risk Management Trainer.

Other Subject Experts may also be brought in to provide further advice.

To register contact (758) 452-3165. You can also email [email protected] for further information.

MOU signed between BOSL and Millennium Heights Medical Complex
Bank of Saint Lucia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) to rehabilitate the existing pediatric ward and install a brand-new ATM machine at the OKEU hospital. Representatives of this joint venture gathered at BOSL’s head office on Thursday last week for a small ceremony documenting this new initiative.

BOSL has committed to donating $75,000 towards the improvement of the MHMC’s Pediatric Ward in addition to installing an ATM machine to give patients and families the convenience of ready access to cash.

According to the Acting Managing Director of Bank of Saint Lucia, Mr. Medford Francis, the monetary donation will assist in the beautification of the ward, acquiring more advanced medical equipment to better diagnose and treat various illnesses and the provision of a mascot, to be called BOSLEE, designated to the ward to uplift the spirit of its patients.

The bank has also committed to providing parents of every child born on the 25th of December with a hamper as well as a new bank account with an opening balance for each child born on Christmas and New Years of each year.

Chairperson of the MHMC Board, Joanna Raynold-Arthurton, expressed how grateful she was for the bank’s support and encouraged more corporate sponsors to get involved through the MHMC Trust.

CEO of MHMC, Dr. Dexter James, says that this donation marks a pivotal step forward in the state of childcare offered at the complex and the board’s commitment to providing exceptional people centered healthcare services to all patients.

According to Bank officials, the installation of the new ATM machine has already begun and is valued at approximately $85,000 in addition to the $75K donated towards the improvement of the Pediatric ward.

Auguste historic triple ton sets the foundation for a Saint Lucia victory
Following a historic triple hundred by former West Indies Under-19 cricket captain Ackeem Auguste, the Dominica Under-23 gave up the ghost in the second inning, as they succumb to 124 all out in 37.1 overs; losing by an inning and 10 runs.

Sky LaFeuille started the slide when he first removed Malakai Xavier for 00 – 04 for 1, and then trapped skipper Stephan Pascal for 13 – 28 for 2. Wickets continue to tumble at regular intervals 3 for 41, 4 for 55, 5 for 73, 6 for 94, 7 for 95, 8 for 104, 9 for 123, and all out for 124.

The wickets were shared with Jayden Elibox taking 3 for 11, Sky LaFeuille grabbed 2 for 10, Lee John 2 for 11, Keon Gaston 2 for 32, and Royce Paul 1 for 07, with 11 extras delivered.

J Joseph top-scored with 40, J Vidal made 17, S Pascal and J Alexander contributed 17 apiece, and C LeBlanc 11 as the only scores of note in a disappointing second inning batting display, as Saint Lucia Under-23 won the only 3-day encounter in the inaugural Under-23 Bilateral Series by an inning and 10 runs.

Earlier, Saint Lucia Under-23 resumed on the third and final morning 313 for 7 with Ackeem Auguste 191 not out, and Lee John 16 not out. Auguste was the ninth wicket to fall with the total 474, before Royce Paul 47 not out and Sky LaFeuille with 05 took the score to 488 all out. Auguste knock of 308 contained 23 fours and 18 sixes in 404 minutes off 257 balls with a strike rate of 119.84.

Kyron Phillip bowled his heart out for his team finishing with figures of 24.4 overs-3 maidens-4 for 106, with a wicket apiece going to E Doctrove, JN Alexander, T Leblanc, MI Xavier, and D Alexander, but the dominance of Auguste on the bright, sunny Monday morning removed any potency the Dominica attack may have had as he peppered the boundary and beyond with a classy yet savage display of batting.

Two outstanding knocks mark first two days of U23 clash
Two outstanding innings marked the first two days of the inaugural Under-23 Bilateral Cricket Series between Dominica and host Saint Lucia at the Mindoo Philip Park this weekend.

Saint Lucia, responding to Dominica’s Under-23’s first inning score of 354 all out in 97 overs, were 313 for 7 off 67 overs. The Dominican total was aided and abetted by an incredible knock of 160 off 218 balls and included 18 fours and 5 sixes, by captain Stephan Pascal a former West Indies Under-19 captain, and a Windward Volcanoes player. His inning began on Saturday morning, and ended on Sunday morning; he was the last wicket to fall.

Other notable scores in the Dominica inning was by Kyron Phillip with 48, J. Alexander and J Joseph made 27 apiece, and D Alexander chipped in with 24 at the tail end of the inning, as Dominica lost wickets at 23, 92, 161, 191, 205, 220, 221, 239, 279, 324, and 354.

Extras totalled 28, and bowling for Saint Lucia Under-23 was Sky LaFeuille with 4 for 61 off 21 overs. Giving able support was Royce Paul with 3 for 41, while Keon Gaston, Jaydon Elibox, and Ackeem Auguste taking a wicket each.

Responding to the Dominica massive total, Saint Lucia led by a classy 191 not out by Ackeem Auguste, was 313 for 7 at the end of day two, along with Lee John not out 16. Auguste, another former West Indies Under-19 cricket captain, and currently a West Indies Academy player, hit 15 fours and 9 sixes off 186 balls to date.
Saint Lucia lost wickets at 39, 55, 68, 150, 161, 239, with extras to date totalling 21. Amongst the wickets to fall that of Kimani Melius, another West Indies Under-19 cricket captain.

Leading the bowling attack for the Dominicans is Kyron Phillip with 2 for 80, M. Joseph and D. Alexander with 1 for 33 apiece, M. Xavier 1 for 46, and J. Alexander 1 for 58.

Tuesday August 19, 2024 is day three of this intriguing clash, and will be followed by two 50-over games at the same venue the Mindoo Philip Park on Wednesday and Thursday August 21 and 22, 2024.

Saint Lucia to host Goodwill Swimming later this month
Some 300 swimmers from 10 territories will participate in the 28th edition of the Goodwill Swimming Championship, August 16-18 at the Rodney Heights Aquatics Centre (RHAC) in Gros Islet. This will be the biggest meet ever hosted by the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation (SLAF).
Visiting teams include 2023 hosts Jamaica; defending champions the Bahamas; 2022 winners Trinidad & Tobago; Antigua & Barbuda; Barbados; Curaçao; Grenada; Suriname; and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Guyana, a Goodwill founding member, will miss a third straight meet.
The Goodwill Swimming Championships is an annual, age-group swimming tournament for select countries in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The competition was created as a development meet, providing exposure to younger and less-experienced swimmers.
Saint Lucia last hosted Goodwill in 2017, but this year's meet promises to be more than twice as large as it was seven years ago. The influx of visitors - swimmers, coaches, team officials, family, and supporters - is expected to number in excess of 600.
Teams will arrive on island on Thursday, August 15, with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, August 16 from 4:30 pm. Then will come the three days of intense but friendly competition, with hundreds of swimmers representing their territories to the fullest.
Competitors must either be citizens or residents of the country they are representing. Swimmers who participated in the CARIFTA, CCCAN, CONSANAT Swimming Championships, or higher competitions during 2024 are not eligible to compete.
Each federation may enter a maximum of four (4) swimmers per gender, per age-group, up to a maximum total of forty (40) athletes.
Saint Lucians are urged to come out and support the hosts, as well as all of the visiting teams. The Government of Saint Lucia, the National Lotteries Authority, and the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee are supporting the 2024 Goodwill Swimming Championships.

Jaelyn Henry's triumph and tenacity: doubles win and a fierce singles fight
Jaelyn Henry recently returned home from St. Vincent after participating in the Chatoyer Cup Under 14 COTECC Tournament with remarkable achievements. Jaelyn had an impressive run, reaching both the singles and doubles finals. She clinched her first COTECC Doubles title with her partner Danelle Kennedy from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, defeating the St. Kitts and Nevis duo Laila Harris and Shreya Rawat in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

In what would have been her first singles COTECC title, Jaelyn faced a tough match against the number two seed in the tournament, Shreya Rawat. She lost the first set 4-6, won the second set 6-4, and lost the third set 6-3. Despite this, her performance throughout the tournament was outstanding, showcasing her determination and skill.

Jaelyn's achievements at the Chatoyer Cup COTECC Tournament mark a significant milestone for both her and tennis in Saint Lucia. Her victory in the doubles event, alongside Danelle Kennedy, highlights her exceptional talent and teamwork.

Even though she fell short in the singles final, her performance against Shreya Rawat demonstrated her resilience. Jaelyn's accomplishments reflect her hard work and dedication, and they serve as an inspiration to aspiring young athletes in Saint Lucia. We are immensely proud of her and will continue to support and encourage her as she pursues further success.

Here's one way to pay tribute to our media colleague - broadcaster, author, and entrepreneur. It's on Amazon --
The book deals with a young Dave, growing up in Saint Lucia and its capital city Castries. His immense popularity as a teenage singing heartthrob with the Tru Tones band in the late 60s and the many challenges of an only child under the supervision of his grandmother, a seamstress, as his mother had migrated to England on the heels of his father David Z to end their sham marriage. Dave's broadcast skills are undoubtedly part of his biographical make-up. His insight into the Tourism Industry where he was employed for 12 years and his personal experiences in media, especially after the establishment of DSP, his award-winning PR, advertising and Video Production Company. The Chapters about confronting satanic forces and the embrace of the calypso artform by Saint Lucians are completely engrossing. My story, Your Voice includes interviews with former Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, former Prime Ministers, Sir John Compton and Dr. Kenny D. Anthony and Prime Minister, Allen M. Chastanet. The book also features George Odlum, who is credited for the political education of thousands of Saint Lucians. Originally, the author had thought of the title My Story, My Voice, but explains, wherever I go, people always comment on my Voice and how it has impacted them over the years. So, in a sense, I always acknowledge the Voice as not really my own but a God given gift to be shared with Saint Lucia and all its people.
