Dear Friend of Palestine-Israel Journal
of Politics, Economics and Culture,

We are in the process of preparing a special 25th Anniversary Issue of Palestine-Israel Journal, and are seeking funds to ensure that we can celebrate the occasion with a timely and important issue. It will feature as a centerpiece a

CONVERSATION ABOUT ISRAEL-PALESTINE BETWEEN PROF. NOAM CHOMSKY (US) AND DR. TONY KLUG (UK), May 2020 to April 2021
_____________________________
For nearly a year, world-renowned public intellectual Professor Noam Chomsky engaged in a wide-ranging email conversation focused primarily on Israel-Palestine with veteran Middle East analyst, Dr Tony Klug, a frequent contributor to the Palestine-Israel Journal and an international board member. The correspondence, which was sparked by Klug’s PIJ article: Should Trump’s “Vision” for Israeli-Palestinian Peace Be Taken Seriously? prompted an initial response from Chomsky. Klug’s reply provoked a further Chomsky response, and the stage was set for a fascinating, free-wheeling tour d’horizon that surveys both historical and contemporary events, vacillating between areas of broad agreement and points of candid disagreement.
Both Chomsky and Klug believe that Israelis and Palestinians are facing critical junctures in their histories. What needs to be done by the different parties, including most importantly the international community, to change the current wretched reality and bring the long-running clash finally to a tolerable end is also probed.
This 92-page enlightening and stimulating exchange will be followed by a series of articles by Israeli and Palestinian members of the Palestine-Israel Journal editorial board, and by other relevant Israelis, Palestinians and international commenting on the contents and conclusions in the Chomsky-Klug exchange.
The exchange and the comments will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of the conflict and the quest for a realistic solution, for the sake of both peoples and the broader international community.

Our friend Dr. Tony Klug was one of the first people to advocate the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel back in 1973, and Prof. Chomsky has of course been one of the leading, influential (if controversial) public intellectuals active for many years. We need to raise at least $30,000 to be able to prepare, publish and circulate this special issue. Support for this special project can be sent in one of the following ways:

Today the first ever totally virtual J Street national conference starts, I guess not in DC, but in cyberspace. It's not clear to me how this is going to work. Palestine-Israel Journal has an Exhibitor's "Booth" at the conference, and in theory you can talk with us. Meanwhile, here's a special introductory video that my colleague Ziad AbuZayyad and I prepared, with the aid of Ava Shaevel: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y_tVQxV9kkrPwrZ4z15Pnlj5nq5q4ja1/view

The new issue of Palestine-Israel Journal has appeared, "Israel-Germany-Palestine: History and Responsibilities", an unprecedented cooperation between PIJ and the Berlin-based diAK. With the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, it will be published in both English and German. As the title of the editorial notes, it's a "very challenging triangle." Much food for thought, and also action.

Before one of our interns Abbey had to leave, she gave us a little gift with a beautiful little letter inside. Here is what she so kindly wrote:

"Dear PIJ team,
Thank you for having me over this past month. Jerusalem certainly is an enigma. It is an interesting and crucial time to be here and I really do feel that PIJ is doing THE most interesting and crucial work there is to be done. I believe in both its content and its vision. So here is a gift from Australia - a journal of much smaller size - but a symbol nonetheless of the power of writing. I will do whatever I can from the other side of the world to keep the vision of PIJ alive.

PIJ Cultural Editor Prof. Galit Hasan-Rokem was so angry and ashamed by some of the Israeli government's recent actions towards Palestinians, that she felt she had to express those feelings in writing. Many other PIJ editorial board members shared her feelings, resulting in the exchange which is published below.
