"Ammar designs frameworks where “structure can become the architect.” In constructing the bridge at The Royal Academy for Nature Conservation, his aim was to design the “thinnest and lightest arch possible” using local material and techniques. The challenge is set, not only structurally, but also in engaging the poetics of the materials and histories integral to the location"

Excerpt from DAS 01 - Ammar Khammash - Notes on Formation.

31/01/2023

Notes on Formation: Ammar Khammash is the first book in our Architecture Series, a platform to publish multi-layered readings of conversations with Arab architects working across the region’s contemporary landscapes.

DAS 01 features Ammar Khammash whose work in building, painting, sculpture and music, together with his social, geological and botanical research break and intersect with every possible disciplinary mold in favor of an ongoing momentum of production and dissemination of knowledge. His practice is an act of mutual formation, an ongoing collaboration between himself and nature, which is, in his regard, the only real architect.

Stay tuned for information about the book launch coming soon!

This is an excerpt of many inspiring conversations we had with Ammar to build the narrative of DAS01: Notes on Formation.

This book is the product of several visits to the Khammash Architects offices in Amman, and numerous calls with Ammar after border closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than package the practice, this book aims to reveal associations, untangle connections, and trace loose threads. In exploring these various processes of formation – material, intellectual, and otherwise – this book works to offer a reading of architecture that draws on experimentation, context sensitivity and cultural introspection as main foundations.

We invited Ammar Khammash ( )to be our guest for the first edition of DAS.

Ammar exemplifies our quest. His work in building, painting, sculpture and music, together with his social, geological and botanical research intersects with and breaks every possible disciplinary mold in favor of an ongoing momentum of production and dissemination of knowledge. His practice is an act of mutual formation, an ongoing collaboration between himself and nature, which is, in his regard, the only real architect.

For the past two years, we have been developing a new architecture book series we will be releasing very soon!

Dongola’s inquiry of architecture is rooted in the discipline’s lack of discipline, in the way it generatively leaks into other fields as a true intersection of thought and practice.

Through architecture, we aim to uncover and publish intimate perspectives of life in the Arab region by drawing on noteworthy approaches of leading Arab architects to context-specific situations, processes, legacies, and materialities.

Stay tuned!

🟡 Ambit and Dongola Challenge the Spectacle of War 🟡

It was February 2022 when Ambit Magazine, having missed one opportunity to collaborate with Dongola Limited Editions, reached out again in hopes of them both getting a second chance. Ambit invited Dongola to co-edit their 248th issue and Dongola happily accepted the invitation. A publication house primarily concerned with art books, this would be their first time working on a magazine. So, as Russia invaded Ukraine, the two publishers – one British, one Lebanese – came together to create Ambit 248: The War Issue.
Dongola Limited Editions
Kirsty Allison, editor of Ambit, Sarah Chalabi, founder of Dongola, and Zeina Chamseddine, junior editor and project manager at Dongola spent February establishing the magazine’s structure, in March they called for submissions, by June the content was set, design in July, with a release in September, not knowing whether the war in Ukraine would still be raging, whether it would be over, or whether yet another war would have begun. In regards to the magazine, no foreseeable events could diminish its relevance. The issue of war demands more attention every day.
