Assume that you are not the producer but the engineer. Therefore, you do need to follow some guidelines from the producer below. That means don't say you didn't pan any tracks because you personally like mono. Imagine you have only 2 hours. You should spend the first hour and a half mixing and the last half hour bouncing to stereo and answering the questions below.

The analog tape recorder (a.k.a. analog tape machine) cannot respond to the full 120 dB of dynamic range that human ears can. Therefore it can never really fool the ear into thinking the recording is real. The dynamic range that an analog tape recoder can accommodate is much smaller than we might think.

If you are like most people in the United States, you probably go to the movies regularly. Movies are a great form of entertainment. So is television. And the DVD is, bringing the theater experience practically into our homes. And how about those commercials that got you to want to watch in the first place? When we watch a film or video or commercial, we are not only seeing the images, but also hearing the sound that goes with them. Most of us don't give much thought to the audio we are hearing. We don't see (or hear) the incredible amount of effort that goes into making a soundtrack.

In 1897, Thaddeus Cahill created the world's first electric synthesizer, the Telharmonium. Telharmonium was built with 36 keys and could only produce sine waves. In 1923, Leon Theremin invented the Theremin, which became the first electronic instrument to gain public attention. It wasn't until the late 1930s that recording equipment began to be invented, paving the way for the future of synthesizers.

Noise is something we are quite familiar with and is a simple sound, yet its precise definition is not actually straightforward. A common definition of noise is 'a sound present in all sound environments, generated by the irregular movement of air particles.' In music, noise is often defined as 'unwanted sound' or 'abnormal sound.' Noise can be heard when the volume is turned up in an audio playback system without any input.

Pre-Delay is the silence before the onset (attack) of reverberant energy. The period of pre-delay is based on room size. (e.g. bigger room --> longer period) Pre-Delay separates the dry signal and the reverb signal by delaying the latter. Pre-Delay is used to enhance the clarity of the reverb. It makes vocal sounds more distinct and drum sounds thicker. This parameter clearly does not change the quality of the sound. Instead, it separates the reverb and dry signal to create a more powerful sound.

Since March 2021, a French film composer has been getting a lot of attention for his homemade MIDI controller. This simple device has been described by people as perfect for adding expression to virtual instruments, especially orchestral ones. The name of this device is the 'Nuances Controller', a professional-grade MIDI CC controller housed in an oiled wood case. The Nuances Controller is specifically made by a composer to meet the needs of professional composers and producers. It is carefully built to last for most demanding composers working with orchestral libraries. Nuances Controller is the ideal product to precisely control your dynamic, expression, vibrato, volume, or any parameter for all modern sampled sound banks, providing a way to finally achieve a truly expressive music score.

Life in professional audio involves processing audio signal with things like equalizers, effects programs, dynamic level controllers, etc. When you use these devices they can end up adding more level to your already maximized signal, sending into overload distortion. Once a signal is distorted, no amount of processing further down the path can remove it. So, we need to become aware of what processors do to a signal and how to use them and still have an undistorted signal.
