Assume that you are not the producer but the engineer. Therefore, you do need to follow some guidelines from the producer below. That means don't say you didn't pan any tracks because you personally like mono. Imagine you have only 2 hours. You should spend the first hour and a half mixing and the last half hour bouncing to stereo and answering the questions below.

The analog tape recorder (a.k.a. analog tape machine) cannot respond to the full 120 dB of dynamic range that human ears can. If you are like most people in the United States, you probably go to the movies regularly. Movies are a great form of entertainment. So is television. And the DVD is, bringing the theater experience practically into our homes. And how about those commercials that got you to want to watch in the first place? When we watch a film or video or commercial, we are not only seeing the images, but also hearing the sound that goes with them. Most of us don't give much thought to the audio we are hearing. We don't see (or hear) the incredible amount of effort that goes into making a soundtrack.

In 1897, Thaddeus Cahill created the world's first electric synthesizer, the Telharmonium. Telharmonium was built with 36 keys and could only produce sine waves. In 1923, Leon Theremin invented the Theremin, which became the first electronic instrument to gain public attention. Life in professional audio involves processing audio signal with things like equalizers, effects programs, dynamic level controllers, etc. When you use these devices they can end up adding more level to your already maximized signal, sending into overload distortion. Once a signal is distorted, no amount of processing further down the path can remove it.
