Ordinary North Korean workers, especially skilled workers from wig and eyelash manufacturing factories, have been forcibly mobilized for work at munitions factories in Chagang and North Pyongan province. The sudden spike in production is thought to be connected to Kim Jong Un’s arms trade with Russia, but workers are being told the munitions are needed to counter American and South Korean aggression.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the French Embassy yesterday to celebrate “UMG-Daily NK Content Day 2023!”

“Content Day” was a wonderful chance to re-cap UMG and Daily NK’s activities and the wide variety of content we have produced for North Korean residents this year, as well as an opportunity to share the insightful feedback from our listeners.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the French Embassy and Ambassador Philippe Bertoux for their support in graciously hosting our event (and for the macarons!).

Kim Hyung-gi and Cho A-young acted as our delightful hosts for the evening, and Mrs. Cho joined Daily NK Editor-in-Chief Ha Yuna and UMG Radio Producer Jeon Taewoo for a fascinating peek behind the curtain of the custom content-making process.

We were thrilled to see familiar and new faces alike, including UMG and Daily NK’s own producers, announcers, journalists, and staff, as well as our representatives from the institutions supporting our mission, BBC journalists, members of the French, German, and Australian embassies, and many others.

The night also featured two exhibitions. One exhibition featured media devices used by North Koreans to consume foreign content, while the other shared some select excerpts of the invaluable feedback sent back to UMG and Daily NK from North Korean residents.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us to make “Content Day” possible. We had a wonderful time, and we hope that you will continue to support us again next year as we continue to work to advance freedom of information in North Korea.

[Continuing Story] China began implementing its revised anti-espionage law in July this year, and its current implementation is a clear threat to freedom of the press. State security agents have labeled working for foreign news outlets or intelligence agencies as a threat to national security. Efforts to counter spying on Chinese institutions also appears to extend to guarding the secrecy of North Korean enterprises operating in China as well.

For many, a few years’ sentence at one of North Korea’s prison camps can become a death sentence due to dangerous work conditions, miniscule rations, and poor hygiene that encourages disease. While these conditions are well-documented, Reporter Mun sheds some light on what happens if a prisoner dies and the way that the regime continues to deprive inmates of dignity even after death.

The North Korean authorities are collecting a list of Chinese nationals wishing to re-enter North Korea, including their passport information, in what appears to be preparations to allow overseas Chinese back into the country for the first time since the pandemic. Some Chinese living in North Korea paid to leave the country during the lockdown, and now returnees expect to have to pay to get back in as the borders slowly reopen.

A spot of good news: Many men in the city of Hyesan have suddenly (and rather mysteriously) turned over a new leaf. Many women have reported that their husbands have started doing housework after returning from work. In North Korea, men are not expected to contribute to chores, so this sudden attitude shift has been a much needed change for wives who stretched thin between chores, child-rearing, and earning money in the markets.

[Tech Trends] North Korea has recently released a new smartphone line (the Hwawon), but the phones remain mysteriously absent from store shelves and only available by special phone order. [Tech Trends] North Korea’s online payment system has made a key adjustment designed to entice users with foreign money. For the first time, the pre-paid card system will reflect market exchange rates rather than the highly overvalued “official” rate (40x times higher than the market). Despite increases in security in the lead up to the November elections, a recent murder has shocked many in Hyesan. A woman carrying harvested soybeans was killed by an unknown assailant on her way to the market, presumably to steal her crops. Some residents, however, believe that the murder may have had a political motivation.

North Korea’s overland trade has been steadily increasing in 2023, and a new move signals the regime may intend to expand maritime trade next. Trade officials have been ordered to procure second-hand cargo ships, a process involving setting up paper companies to funnel funds and finding and comparing vendors. The trade ministry is demanding the ships by early next year, a likely impossibly fast timeline.

North Korea may be getting closer to a third satellite launch. The country has deployed ~20 personnel to Russia for training on satellite imagery and communications technology needed to make an effective “spy satellite.” As for the propulsion errors that doomed the first two launches, Daily NK sources say domestic scientists have already resolved the issue.

“Winter vacation” has taken on a slightly different meaning in North Korea. Schools normally collect firewood from families to heat schools in winter, but economic struggles have left schools short on supplies. To make up the difference, many schools in Hyesan are going on “firewood” breaks and mobilizing elementary school students to gather firewood.

Home-made radios pieced together from stolen parts have proliferated in North Korea’s military, prompting censorship authorities to launch an investigation and crackdown against individuals surreptitiously tuning in to foreign broadcasts. Interestingly, the recent Office 79 orders deem radio broadcasts “a capitalist poison” even stronger than foreign videos and publications.

Pyongan authorities have announced they will be cracking down on fakes and false advertising in local markets. While the move can be viewed as consumer protection, it may also possibly be an attempt to ferret out state enterprises distributing their wares outside of official avenues.

North Korea is gearing up for its first elections since the Covid-19 pandemic. North Korea’s elections have often been referred to as a “political census” since participation is mandatory and each race has only one candidate. This year as well, authorities are using voter registration to identify and track down people who have left their home jurisdictions.

North Korea is currently celebrating a major drug bust just in time for the October 10th KWP Party Foundation holiday. The individuals arrested are said to be members of a nationwide drug chain that produced drugs for distribution and sale both inside North Korea and across the border in China. Effects of the bust are expected to ripple out to the cadres and officials who had previously covered for the gang’s operations.

Mid-October is kimjang (kimchi making) season in North Korea, and residents have been receiving rations of cabbages and radishes from their workplaces to prepare for winter. Yet, some residents have been debating forgoing kimchi this year in the face of high prices for key seasonings like dried red peppers. One possible solution? Soymilk.
