North Koreans generally cannot choose where they work and are given work assignments by the state. However, a bribe to the right person is often enough to thumb the scale in favor of placement in a better location or more profitable industry. The secrecy around bribes also creates opportunities for con artists to scam parents. Such was the case in Sariwon, where a man was caught issuing fake job placements to the tune of thousands of dollars.

North Korea might be having a bit of a convenience store boom. Some private vendors are filling a niche for households far from the markets by setting up small street stalls in convenient locations. The stalls are small and have limited inventory, but generally sell daily necessities like snacks and ci******es.

North Korea is experiencing a boom in car culture, but growth has been held back by strict government limits on imports. Private traders generally secured import licenses through official trading companies and focused on used cars bought cheaply from China and resold at a mark up. Now, the government is only allowing new cars to enter the market, but most traders can’t afford to purchase a new car or make any profit from selling one.

Your boss making more money than you is nothing unusual, but what if your boss took your pay raise as well? Chinese factories are now paying more per worker, but since the North Korean trade companies are acting as intermediaries, workers’ wages have not changed. Workers were already only receiving 10~20% of their actual salaries, but that percentage is now effectively under 10%.

Soldiers are a major part of the manpower behind North Korea’s rural development initiatives, but logistics officers frequently siphon off the food and supplies earmarked for workers in rural areas. As a result, the Ministry of Defense has launched a corruption investigation and revealed that approximately 10% of soldiers working on the factories were bedridden from severe malnutrition.

Smugglers bringing South Korean cosmetics into North Korea often have to completely repackage products as Chinese items to clear customs, making it hard for buyers to be certain that they are getting the real deal. For those who have been using South Korean cosmetics for years, however, many say they can tell from something as simple as texture or smell.

Now education officials are trying new methods to separate out the fakers, including interviews about the content of the papers they have (supposedly) written.

One such agent was well-known to flaunt his wealth taking taxis and motorcycles, but these days, he has downgraded to riding a bike like everyone else. His fall in stature reflects dwindling income for smugglers, and as a result, the agents who take a cut.

North Korea has always struggled with electricity, but the lights illuminating statues of the Kim leaders and other similar propaganda features manage to retain electricity around the clock. However, a total blackout across North Hwanghae is so far-reaching that even these top-priority facilities have gone dark. The failure is believed to be the result of a surge in electricity demand, side effects from over-heated equipment, and minimal safety features.
