Much of the South Korean property in Kaesong Joint Industrial Complex was demolished, but some of it has been repurposed for the regime’s own needs. This appears to include the Hyundai-brand buses, which were recently spotted in satellite imagery stationed outside Wonsan Kalma Coastal Resort. The allocation of these high-quality buses and scarce electricity demonstrate the regime’s top priorities.

In another sign of how tight the North Korean economy has become, even police officers have reduced their expectations for bribes. In the past, officers often demanded sums of $70 or more, but most have adjusted this number and become far less aggressive. Citizens attribute this change to an awareness that even the most well off targets for bribery and extortion are no longer making as much money as before.

It might sound like something straight out of 1984, but North Korean authorities recently publicly shamed a young boy for writing “I love you” in a love note to his girlfriend. The outright expression of romantic feelings is associated with the influence of South Korean culture, turning a simple sweet confession into evidence of a “decadent lifestyle imbued with capitalist views of love.”

Coffee is a daily necessity for most South Koreans, and the trend has now made its way northward. A coffee from a cafe in North Korea costs about $5 USD, roughly the same as a cup in South Korea. But those $5 are an exorbitant sum for most North Koreans. As a result, coffee is a key form of conspicuous consumption among young North Koreans and the upper classes.

North Korean workers are on their way to becoming a staple of the Russian economy. Russia had previously hired laborers from neighboring countries like Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, but recent terror incidents involving Central Asian nationals have changed employer’s preferences. Now, Russia is pivoting towards filling the labor void with North Korean and Pakistani workers, effectively opening the door for Kim Jong Un to deploy thousands more workers.

October celebrations might be just a tad sweeter for North Koreans this year, thanks to a massive Chinese aid shipment of refined sugar. The shipment is believed to be tied to Kim’s recent visit to Beijing and is intended to highlight the good relationship between the two socialist states. The rationale for sugar specifically is unclear, but foodstuffs like sugar are exempt under international sanctions.
