: THE FUNNY SCENARIO IN ST. LAWRENCE'S MARTYRDOM
Mga bok at ter, today (August 10) we remember Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr. Did you know that the said saint is also recognized by the Catholic Church as patron of comedians? What makes this fact surprising is that he earned that label because, even in the midst of his martyrdom, he still managed to crack a joke.
Lawrence was among the seven deacons who served Pope Sixtus II in Rome in the 3rd century. He was put in the crosschairs of the Roman Empire because of his belief that the Catholic Church possessed huge amounts of treasure. He was then questioned by a Roman official about the location of the Church's treasure. The response of the martyred saint: โBehold in these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you; to which I will add pearls and precious stones, those widows and consecrated virgins, which are the Churchโs crown.โ
His clever answer was not received too well, putting him into prison. It did not take long for the Roman official to sentence the deacon to a brutal death, as he refused to worship the Roman gods. Based on the narration of the Golden Legend:
"The executioners therefore stripped him, laid him out on the iron grill, piled burning coals under it, and pressed heated iron pitchforks upon his body. And with a cheerful countenance [Lawrence] said to [the Roman official]: โLook, wretch, you have me well done on one side, turn me over and eat!โ"
This comedic response made his executioners furious; hence, their decision to simply turn up the heat and let Saint Lawrence burn to death.
