Hanging in our new space as a tribute to our heritage, the Ndebele Woman is a reminder that while Africa and Asia might be miles apart geographically, there are threads and stories that connect and history that binds our different cultures. It is also a reminder that we will always be deeply connected by our humanity.

ＮＥＷ ＳＰＡＣＥ ＬＯＡＤＩＮＧ．．．

To most this is just an empty space… a box... but to us it’s a space to tell stories, to create and to incubate... it’s a space filled with opportunity.

The South African history of the Ndebele people can be traced back to Mafana, their first identifiable chief. Mafana's successor, Mhlanga, had a son named Musi who, in the early 1600's, decided to move away from his cousins (later to become the mighty Zulu nation) and to settle in the hills of Gauteng near where the capital, Pretoria is situated. After the death of Chief Musi, his two sons quarrelled over the chieftainship and the tribe divided into two sections, the Manala and the Ndzundza.

The Manala remained in the north while the Ndzundza, also known as the Southern Ndebele, travelled to the east and the south. Both groups remained distinctly Ndebele.

The famous house-painting, beadwork and ornamentation often spoken of as Ndebele are produced mostly by the Ndzundza Ndebele of Mpumalanga and Gauteng (Southern Ndebele). Gauteng is also the province I am originally from.

This incredible piece, when framed, will hang in our new space as a tribute to our heritage as well as a reminder that while Africa and Asia might be different geographically, that culturally and ritually, we can find similarities (such as the Padaung or Kayan Lahwi tribe in Myanmar and Thailand and the neck rings or brass coils that are placed around the neck for a multitude of reasons).

There is a part of me that is incredibly excited and another part that wonders if I have gone totally mad and lost the plot... but, regardless... we have a space and are we are creating something new and exciting. 3 weeks today to occupation...

Pride is a time for us to reflect on the progress we’ve made towards LGBTQ+ equality and to acknowledge the fact that we stand on the shoulders of all those who have fought so hard over the years to achieve this. It is also a time for us to acknowledge that we still have so much more to do. Pride is also a time for celebration of the many vibrant, dynamic and powerful LGBTQ+ communities.
