The name Angkor Thom means β€œGreat City” in Khmer. However, it was also known as Nokor Thom, which is believed to be the correct name due to a mispronunciation.
The word β€œNokor” is derived from the Sanskrit word β€œNagara,” meaning β€œCity,” combined with the Khmer word β€œThom,” meaning β€œBig” or β€œGreat.”

Angkor Thom served as the capital of Jayavarman VII’s empire and was the center of his massive building program.
It overlapped with the earlier city of Yasodharapura, and the Khmers did not clearly distinguish between the two.
The last temple constructed in Angkor Thom was Mangalartha in 1295.
The Ayutthaya Kingdom later sacked Angkor Thom, leading to its abandonment before 1609.
The city likely sustained a population of 80,000–150,000 people.

The Elephant Pond, also known as Srah Damrei, is a captivating site located on Kulen Mountain in Cambodia. The Elephant Pond area is overflowing with stone-carved animals that can only be reached by foot or motorcycle.
Among these sculptures, you’ll find a life-size stone elephant, which was once considered the β€œguardian” of the mountain.
Other smaller stone statues include lions, a frog, and a cow.
