Mount Tambora, also known as Mount Tamboro, is a volcano located on Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. Before the eruption in 1815, Mount Tambora was known as one of the quiet and fertile sleeping mountains in Indonesia. On April 5, 1815, this mountain erupted with extraordinary force. This eruption occurred explosively and resulted in the disappearance of most of the mountain's crater. This eruption released volcanic ash that reached a height of more than 40 km (25 miles) in the atmosphere. This volcanic ash spread widely throughout the world and caused several dramatic effects in various parts of the earth. The impact of the eruption of Mount Tambora was very powerful. This eruption resulted in the disappearance of around 12,000-15,000 people and destroyed several villages around the mountain. Almost all the vegetation around the mountain was destroyed and buried under a layer of ash along with animal carcasses that were swept away by the pyroclastic flow. Apart from its local effects, the Tambora eruption also had a significant global impact. The volcanic ash produced by this eruption reduces sunlight reaching the earth's surface, resulting in a decrease in global temperature. The year 1816 was known as the "Year Without a Summer" in many parts of the world because of the extremely cold weather. As a result, there has been a decline in agricultural production and the emergence of famine in several regions of the world. The eruption of Mount Tambora has also been an inspiration for scientists and volcanologists in understanding the mechanisms of volcanic eruptions. Research is continuing to study this mountain and further understand the potential for similar eruptions in the future. Until now, Mount Tambora is still active and a destination for tourists and mountain climbers.
