🎉🤩 On December 16, 2024, scriptwriters of our 'Speak Out, Sisters!' theater play and theater play performers from The Acting Art Academy, along with our survivor of gender-based violence, HONG Savath, visited the PSE - Pour un Sourire d'Enfant Cambodia and engage in discussions with students. Later, we returned to the Meta House and held another performance and conversation with German students and special guests invited by the project team. We greatly appreciate everyone who participated and shared their feedback on the talk show, helping us improve and grow. Thank you so much to all participants, especially to those who comment us for contributing to the success of this project. 🙏🥰

🤔 S*x vs. Gender: What’s the Difference?

👉 S*x: Biological traits you're born with (male, female, inters*x), such as organs, chromosomes, and hormones. This is recorded on your birth certificate.

👉 Gender: How you personally identify (man, woman, non-binary, LGBTQ+) and how society expects you to behave. Gender is about how you feel, and it can change over time.

🌟S*x is assigned at birth and listed on your birth certificate, while gender is how you feel and identify. In Cambodia, women are taking on more leadership roles, and the LGBTQ+ community is speaking out to be seen and respected.

SGBV (S*xual and Gender-Based Violence) refers to harmful acts like r**e, domestic violence, s*xual harassment, and discrimination based on someone’s s*x or gender. It affects many, especially women and LGBTQ+ individuals. We must speak out against these injustices to create a safer and more equal society for everyone.🌍✨

🗣️ What does December 10th mean in Cambodia?
December 10th is International Human Rights Day, a day to reflect on the importance of human rights and the fight for equality. In Cambodia, this day carries special meaning as we honor the resilience of those who have faced injustices, particularly women and girls who endure s*xual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

🗣️ Why do we celebrate this day?
We celebrate to amplify the voices of survivors, to remember the lessons of the past, and to take action for a better future. The legacy of the Khmer Rouge still impacts Cambodia today, with survivors of violence carrying untold stories. Their courage inspires us to address injustice and to promote change.

🗣️ What is important to address today?
SGBV is a violation of human rights that threatens the safety, health, and dignity of individuals. Education is a powerful tool to prevent SGBV. When girls are educated, they can advocate for their rights, and when youth are taught about respect, consent, and equality, a safer society emerges. Men and boys must also be allies, standing against violence and harmful behaviors.

Victims of s*xual and gender-based violence (SGBV) or r**e in Cambodia often face societal stigma, making it difficult for them to seek justice or support. They are often blamed for their own abuse, and the culture of "shaming the victim" is deeply rooted in many communities. This social pressure silences victims, leaving them afraid to speak out due to fear of judgment and rejection.

Many families are trapped in debt, especially in rural areas, and send their young women and children to work, sometimes in hidden brothels or in s*x work. These victims are forced to live in abusive conditions and, in some cases, coerced into having children. Some women, struggling to find work, resort to working in massage parlors or as bar girls, where they feel compelled to sell their bodies to meet basic needs, pay debts, and support their families and parents.

Speak Out, Sisters! (SOS) 🗣️ Khvach Sophoeun is an indigenous woman who was forced to marry her husband during the Pol Pot regime. Forced marriage during the Khmer Rouge era is considered s*xual gender-based violence (SGBV); because women were often coerced into having in*******se with their husbands after the wedding and were compelled to bear children for the regime’s revolutionary and developmental goals. In the framework of a new project, she shared her memories of that time and her fear of being unable to reject the Khmer Rouge's orders for her wedding. Domestic violence is often seen as a private matter, with social norms normalizing or ignoring abuse. In rural areas, it is common for people to view incidents of husbands beating or even killing their wives as part of everyday family life. Arranged marriages have been a part of Cambodian society for generations and remain common today. In Cambodian culture, women are associated with the word សិរី (glory in peace and happiness) and are believed to bring harmony and happiness to their families and society. Social norms expect women to be gentle, submissive, and forgiving, often pressuring them to remain silent and avoid bringing shame or dishonor to their families. Unfortunately, these expectations contribute to a culture where domestic violence is tolerated, especially in arranged marriages. Regardless of the abuse, whether a husband forces his wife to have s*x, uses violence, or even threatens her life, women are often expected not to speak out, perpetuating cycles of abuse and silence from the past to the present.

Speak Out, Sisters! (SOS) 🗣️ Veu Pom is an indigenous woman who was forced to marry her husband during the Pol Pot regime. Forced marriage during the Khmer Rouge era is considered s*xual gender-based violence (SGBV); because women were often coerced into having in*******se with their husbands after the wedding and were compelled to bear children for the regime’s revolutionary and developmental goals. In the framework of a new project, she shared her memories of that time and her fear of being unable to reject the Khmer Rouge's orders for her wedding. S*x education and consent are not taught in schools, and s*xual jokes about women and girls are normalized. R**e occurs in daily life, including minors as victims, society normally shames and blames them instead of holding perpetrators accountable. Marital r**e is widely accepted as a wife’s duty, even though it is a crime. Victims are often pressured to stay silent, accept compensation, or resolve cases outside court. Some are even forced to marry their rapists to protect their family’s reputation.
