🐉Phnom Bakheng is one of the oldest and most significant temples in the Angkor region of Cambodia. Situated on a hill about 1.5 kilometers from Angkor Wat, it is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. Built in the late 9th to early 10th century during the reign of King Yasovarman I, it was the state temple of the first capital of the Angkor region, Yasodharapura.

Phnom Bakheng is notable for its temple-mountain structure, which symbolizes Mount Meru, the mythical home of the gods in Hindu cosmology. The temple sits atop Phnom Bakheng hill, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including a distant view of Angkor Wat, which is a reason why it has become a popular spot for viewing sunsets.

The architecture follows a step pyramid design, with five tiers and a central sanctuary at the top. The original plan was to have 108 smaller shrines surrounding the temple, reflecting the sacred number in Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, although only a few of these shrines remain today.

In modern times, Phnom Bakheng attracts numerous tourists not only for its historical importance but also for its breathtaking vantage point, offering visitors a chance to see the vast expanse of the Angkor Archaeological Park. However, due to the increasing number of visitors, conservation efforts are underway to preserve the site and manage the influx of tourists.
