Dr. Kizza Besigye, a former personal physician to President Yoweri Museveni, has been one of Ugandaβs most prominent opposition figures. His political rivalry with Museveni dates back decades, stemming from their time together during the liberation struggle in the 1980s.
During this period, Besigye was closely associated with Janet Museveni before she married Yoweri Museveni. Additionally, Winnie Byanyima, an aeronautical engineer and daughter of businessman Boniface Byanyima, was a key figure in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and was seen frequently alongside Museveni in the early years of his presidency. Byanyima later married Besigye in 1998.
Their political rivalry has only intensified over the years, with Besigye challenging Museveni multiple times in presidential elections. His opposition activities have led to numerous arrests, with his most recent legal troubles making headlines. In November 2024, Besigye was reportedly detained in Nairobi, Kenya, and later appeared before a Ugandan military court on charges of possessing illegal fi****ms and attempting to undermine the government. Human rights organizations, including the Commonwealth and Amnesty International, have called for his release, citing concerns over his trial and health condition.
As Uganda approaches another election cycle, Besigye's case continues to fuel political tensions in the country.
