Question of the Day: Umewahi test for HIV? If yes, how was the experience?

The current trend of new infections reported among adolescents and youth threatens to undermine such gains and possibly revert to the high prevalence that saw HIV and AIDS declared a national disaster in the country. The HIV epidemic still poses one of the greatest challenges in Kenya affecting health and social economic spheres of people’s lives. The epidemic has changed the family landscape, resulting in a re-organization of roles and responsibilities, disrupting the lives of adolescents and youth driving up health care costs. Apart from increasing the number of orphans, HIV infection and AIDS-related illnesses also contribute to the vulnerability of adolescents and youth putting them at risk of exploitation. Therefore, this episode is meant to increase awareness among young people about the current state of HIV and AIDS in Kenya as we dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding HIV transmission and prevention. We are also sharing a success story of an individual who has overcome challenges related to HIV/AIDS and she will be sharing positive narratives to inspire hope and resilience within the community .

Activities at Moi University were brought to a standstill on Monday by protesters who have since apologised to former Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof Laban Ayiro as they demand the removal of the current VC who they say is a 'non-performer'.

The demonstrations follow mounting pressure for the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey over allegations of poor leadership and poor performance.

The protesters, who included members of the local community and rights activists, gathered at the main entrance of the university on Monday in preparation for the demonstrations, accusing local leaders of protecting Prof Kosgey amid claims of poor performance and bad leadership.

The demonstrators now accuse the local leaders of fuelling previous demonstrations that led to the removal of Prof Ayiro, the former VC, whom they described as a performer who was the victim of a tribal witch-hunt.

"We apologise to Professor Ayiro. We were deceived by local politicians to chase him away, but he was the best," said Mr Richard Tarus, a local community leader.

The protesters claimed that local politicians incited them to demonstrate against Prof Ayiro in 2016.

"Since Prof Ayiro left this university, we have never had a performer like him. We thought the university would excel if we had one of our own. We are demanding that a competent leader be appointed as VC of Moi University," said Ms Irene Too, one of the protesters.

In 2016, Uasin Gishu political leaders led by then Governor Jackson Mandago, his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos, MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Silas Tiren (Moiben), James Bett (Kesses) and Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker Isaac Terer vowed to stop the university's 32nd graduation ceremony if the government did not appoint Prof Kosgei as a substantive VC.

Why are the youth using lending apps – One can easily access a soft loan from as low as Ksh 200, which is way faster and convenient than getting one from a bank or a micro-finance. The digital borrowing craze by the youth can be attributed to the lack of paperwork, guarantors or collateral needed while applying for normal loans. Thus, offering a quick fix to one’s problem.
On the other hand, the youth have admitted that most times they end up taking these loans so as to keep up with their peers and show off a flashy lifestyle on social media. With the borrowed money they end up buying alcohol, going for concerts, buying cloths or going to fancy restaurants. This craze is due to the fact that majority of the youth would rather have instant gratification as compared to a delayed one where they have to save money so as to buy what they want at a later time.
Youths are being advised to strive to live within their means amid the pressure that comes with wanting to live a flashy lifestyle so as to show off on social media that will ultimately cost them highly.
