World Food Program WFP has postponed the Proof of Life and help-desk activity scheduled todayTuesday, April 23rd to Friday, April 26th, due to the demonstrations held, Monday, April 22nd, which resulted in theft and vandalism at the WFP verification site.
On Monday, April 22nd, Refugees in the Kalobeyei settlement held demonstration as a response to a disagreement between the community leaders and the UNHCR and its partner, the World Food Program (WFP), regarding an impending reduction in food rations.
Last Wednesday, April 17th, the UNHCR and WFP conducted a meeting with the refugee community leaders to inform them about the potential funding shortage and the decision to decrease the food ratio. However, the community leaders were unsatisfied and walked out of the meeting in protest, considering it to be an unfortunate decision made by the organizations.
According to a document obtained by REF FM KK, the reduction in food rations is scheduled to take effect in May, decreasing the current ratio from 50% to 40%. This change is expected to affect the mobile money wired through restricted M-pesa numbers known as Bamba Chakula and Bamba Chapaa.
