The four individuals detained in connection with the multi-billion-shilling fraud case at the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives (KUSCCO) will remain in custody until their bail terms are decided on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

George Magutu Mwangi, Mercy Muthoni Njeru, George Ochola Owino, and Jackline Pauline Atieno Omolo, who appeared before the Milimani Law Courts, face multiple charges, including conspiracy to defraud, theft by company directors, and forgery.

While the four suspects remain in detention, the court has issued a summons for George Otieno Ototo, the former KUSCCO Managing Director, to appear for a plea hearing on the same day his co-accused await their bond decisions. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed this in an X statement on Friday. Jackline Pauline Atieno Omolo, George Ochola Owino, and Mercy Njeru were arrested in Nairobi County on Thursday, while George Magutu Mwangi was apprehended in Nyeri County.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has voiced his support for Kenya's candidate, Raila Odinga, in the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship elections. Gachagua took to social media on Friday morning, stating that Raila is the perfect candidate to lead the AUC.

"Odinga is unquestionably the best choice for the African Union Commission chairmanship. Africa deserves the best," Gachagua wrote.

He believes that Raila's leadership will unite Africa's regions, drawing from his global perspective and strong advocacy for African people. Gachagua also pointed out the need for a leader who can bridge the gap between Africa's Anglophone and Francophone communities, helping to create a more unified continent.

Gachagua’s endorsement is based on the conviction that Raila’s victory in Ethiopia will validate his Pan-African vision. "Raila Odinga's win will be a positive step for Africa and a reflection of Kenya’s influence on the continent," he concluded.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Kirinyaga County for allegedly setting a miraa vehicle on fire after it was involved in a fatal accident along the Mwea-Embu Highway two weeks ago. The suspect, Titus Wagatitu Kimani, was apprehended in Kasarani, Nairobi, following a manhunt.

The incident occurred on January 27, 2025, when a pick-up truck transporting miraa (khat) struck and killed a boda boda rider. Enraged residents subsequently set the vehicle on fire. Kimani was arrested after an extensive search and was brought to Wang'uru Police Station for questioning.

The deceased, Geoffrey Kinyua Nyaga, 46, was a boda boda operator from Kimbimbi Village in Nyangati Ward. Although the driver of the miraa truck narrowly escaped harm, he was attacked by residents of Kianjiru and nearby areas.

In a statement following his son's arrest, Simon Kimani, Titus's father, defended him, insisting that Titus had no role in the incident. According to Simon, Titus had been on his way home to Kagio Town from the South-Ngariama ranch when he encountered the burning truck at Kianjiru. "My son is innocent. He stopped to check the vehicle, not knowing he would be implicated," Simon Kimani said.

Eight families in Kimunye Village, Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, are dealing with significant losses after a fire ravaged their homes. According to local residents, led by Ephantus Bundi, attempts to control the blaze were unsuccessful, resulting in the destruction of eight houses before firefighters from the Kirinyaga County Government arrived.

John Kiama, a county firefighter, confirmed that they received an emergency call and swiftly responded to the scene in Kimunye. "The village has sixteen houses, and by the time we arrived, eight had already been destroyed. We managed to prevent the fire from spreading any further," Kiama explained.

The Kimunye Police Post officers, along with the area chief, were also present at the scene. They reported that the fire was caused by a leaking gas cylinder. "Our neighbor went to the shop and left a gas cylinder that was leaking, which sparked the fire. Thankfully, no one was injured," said Peter Ndiga, a resident.
