This is one post that will scare every parent.
15 years old Ian Gichagua Maingi is a Form 2 student at Njumbi High School. A very bright boy for that matter.
Nothing unusual about him until 17th October when his mother Jennifer Muthoni received a text from Njumbi High School. The school was planning to release the students the following day for the long December holidays. Mama Ian was happy that Ian had a successful term.
Earlier on 15th September Mama Ian had visited Njumbi High School. She had been told the school was planning to send home all students who had not cleared school fees. And because she didn't have enough to clear the balance she pleaded with the school to allow him to be in class as she looked for ways to clear the balance before end of term. The school graciously accepted.
On 27th September the school released students who had fee arrears. Ian didn't show up home so the mother was happy because the school decided to keep him.
So when the text about the school closing on 17th October was sent, Mama Ian was relieved that the term was a successful one. Actually, the messages were two. There was another praising Ian's performance.
What happens at Njumbi High School is that any time a student exits or goes back to school the parent receives a text message. This notification ensures the parent is at all times aware of the movements of the son.
On 18th morning Mama Ian waited for the notification but she didn't get. Knowing the school releases students early morning, she grew impatient. And it takes Ian an hour or less to get home from school. At lunch time she decided to call one of Ian's teachers. The teacher told her the students 'walifunga shule kitambo', meaning way earlier in the day. The family now started looking for Ian's class teacher.
"We tried reaching the class teacher, and when she called back, she said Ian had gone home weeks ago because of school fees. Later that evening, the principal called to clarify that he had not sent Ian home.”
That’s when panic set in.
Ian’s parents realized that their son had been missing for nearly three weeks, and the school had not noticed.
The class representative has been interrogated and mentioned that Ian had said he was feeling unwell and that he would request leave-out after church on Sunday, 28th September. However, Mama Ian says she did not get a notification that my son wanted a leave out and the school does not know how he left or where he is.
The matter has since been reported to Nyakianga Police Station, under OB Number 13/19/10/2025 at 1511 hours.
Now Ian's family is asking where is their son? Is he in school, out of school, in hospital or where?
Fellow parents, Ian is missing.
