K Street Story
Koinange Street is one of Nairobi’s more infamous thoroughfares. What many people may not know is the story behind one nondescript building that has been changing lives for half a century. Right between Monrovia and Mokhtar Daddah streets is the Rattansi Educational Trust Building. However, it's not just another Nairobi building, for what it represents is the powerful legacy of one man’s tenacity, success and philanthropic nature that has transformed the lives of thousands.
Mohamed Rattansi arrived on a dhow at the port of Mombasa at the turn of the last century. Escaping the hardships of drought and famine in his rural Indian home in Kathiwar, he decided to try his luck in the newest colony of the British Empire. He arrived with nothing but the promise of a job as a trader. On arrival, he was dispatched to Nyeri, which was several weeks walk from Mombasa to set up a barter and supply duka in the hinterland. On the demise of the shop owner, he joined hands with another trader, Osman Allu to take over the business. Their business thrived even in the face of opposition from the settler community in the 1930s who tried to drive all Indians out of the colony. Over time Mohammed grew to be one of Nyeri’s most prominent citizens with a thriving business that extended to Karatina. In time he met and married his wife Maniben and had ten children.
Mohammed often shared that he owed his success to Kenya and he was forever bound to the country that enabled him and his family to thrive. In recognition of his dharma, or final duty, with his wife, he founded the Rattansi Educational Trust in 1957. For over 50 years the Trust has provided hundreds of scholarships and bursaries enabling needy Kenyan children to attend university. In recent years it has also turned to supporting infrastructure and technology development resources for Kenyan institutions.
Oh – and that building? All of the bursaries and awards of the Trust are funded by the rent from the Rattansi Educational Trust Building. You see – K Street has more stories than you know!

Kamakwa: How the Name Came About

At the turn of the 20th century, Kamakwa was known as Giathi, a marketplace primarily for livestock and barter trade, much like Mukarara in Tetu and Gakindu in Mukurweini. However, in the early 1920s, the name Giathi gradually changed to Kamakwa. This change occurred as women hawkers, who mainly sold ripe bananas, would scramble for customers, urging them to buy the fruit with the phrase "ke maya maakwa- as some would say-- ka maakwa..." Over time, the name Kamakwa took root.

Today, Kamakwa Ward is a land of diversity, encompassing Kamakwa, Kihatha, Gitathiini, and Muthuaini. During colonial times, and even in the post-independence era, the ward became a hub for cheap labor, especially in the coffee plantations of Nyeri, such as Kwa Munyeni and Seremai Estate, later known as Seremwai. Many coffee estates in the King'ong'o area provided labor opportunities for the young men and women of Kamakwa.

Additionally, homes owned by colonialists, senior civil servants in the affluent Ringroad Estate, and Asian traders' shops in Nyeri town also relied on this labor force. Unfortunately, this dependence on labor greatly affected school enrollment, with child labor becoming a prominent issue. Local high-class hotels also became centers for such labor.

Despite these challenges, Kamakwa has produced notable leaders, such as Gikuyu Chief Gakere wa Ngunju, whose fort was at Kamakwa Market. He was at the forefront in fighting against the colonialists occupying Rware, Nyeri. However, the ward has also been associated with notorious criminal elements, such as Gerald Wambugu Munyeria, also known as Wanugu, from Kamuyu in the ward, who was killed in cold blood by detectives in 1990.
