Laikipia County has hit a historic KSh 1.202 billion in Own Source Revenue (OSR) for the 2024/2025 financial year. This is the highest amount the county has ever collected from its own local revenue streams, marking a major milestone in Kenyaโs devolution journey.
This record-setting performance reflects bold leadership by Governor Joshua Irungu and the relentless work of the Laikipia County Revenue Board, whose reforms and automation efforts have transformed revenue collection. The county has shown consistent growth, moving from KSh 997 million in 2022/23 to KSh 1.086 billion in 2023/24 and now surging past KSh 1.2 billion.
The Governor hailed the achievement as proof that Laikipia is delivering results through transparency, accountability and innovation. He noted that strong Own Source Revenue means the county can invest directly in the needs of its people without overreliance on delayed national government disbursements.
"This is not just about figures. It is about schools, health centers, roads and youth programs that touch real lives in every ward," said Governor Irungu.
The Laikipia County Revenue Board has digitized systems, sealed loopholes and widened the tax base while maintaining fairness and encouraging compliance. As a result, confidence among residents has grown, with many now paying levies knowing their money is put to work.
Analysts have pointed to Laikipiaโs approach as a model for other counties, showing that effective local leadership can generate resources for development even in challenging economic times.
As Kenya continues to refine its devolution framework, Laikipia's achievement signals that when local leadership is visionary and systems are working, counties can raise and manage their own funds effectively and deliver tangible results to citizens.
Laikipia is not just counting money. It is building a legacy.
