BBI RULING | SUPREME COURT JUDGES MAKES A FINAL DECISION
The Supreme Court of Kenya will deliver judgement on the Building Bridges Initiative on Thursday, March 31.
In a notice, Supreme Court registrar Letizia Wachira said the ruling will be made at 9 am.
"Take notice that the judgement in this matter will be delivered on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 9.00am before Supreme Court of Kenya," read the notice.
Both the High Court and the Court of Appeal shot down the push to amend the Constitution through the BBI, describing the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2021, null and void.
The Supreme Court judges then set January 18, 19 and 20 as dates for the hearings where parties presented and argued their cases, following an appeal by Attorney General Paul Kihara.
In his appeal, the AG challenged key findings of the lower courts that overturned the bid to amend the Constitution including asking the apex court to overturn that decision and declare that the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2021 complied with all requirements to warrant a referendum.
The appellants also wanted the opinion of the apex court on whether the Constitution can only be changed by following four steps of civic education, public participation, constituent assembly debate and a referendum, all in sequence.
