WACHOMWA NA JUA

Naikumbuka,
siku nilipofika kijijini
na kumkuta nyanya kaketi chini ya,
mgunga akisaga ugoro wake
na
kuyaangalia Machweo,
akiwasikiliza nyuni waliokuwa,
wakiimba Kwa msisimko
kuyaomboleza matanga ya magharibi,
Naikumbuka kauli yake,
'Itajuwa lini nasi kuomboleza
Kifo Cha dhiki?'

Naikumbuka Sauti ya
mama alipokuwa akiwinga bundi aliyekuwa akiimba
mbolezi kuucheka umaskini
kuudhihaki uwezo duni wa
Wana Kijiji.
Naikumbuka Sauti ya mama
Na swali lake:
'Lini nasi tutawaimbia watutesao mbolezi za bundi?'

Naikumbuka siku niliposikia
kilio alichokilia ndugu;
kidole kilipokatwa na machine
ya kutengeneza karatasi
Sauti yake akilalamika,
kutolipwa fidia na chozi,
la kufutwa kazi Kwa kutozalisha,
k**a kabla.
Ndio na swali lake:
'Lini itakatwa mirija ya wanyonyaji wafanyao watu machine?'

Naikumbuka ukwenzi,
Aalioupiga Falahi na Mkulima,
aliyepokea pesa ukufi Kwa,
mazao yaliyomlaza nje na kumvunja,
mgongo akilala hoi,
nayakumbuka machozi yake,
yaliyotiririka na kumkamua nguvu akitoa lawama zilizotoka Kwa shida
niliskia swali lake:
'Lini jasho la upanzi na mavuno litawafaidi wachomwa na Jua?'

Female dragonflies fake their death to avoid male harassment.

The moorland hawker dragonfly, also known as the Aeshna juncea, has a unique tactic to avoid unwanted male suitors during mating season. Females will fall to the ground at high speeds and then pretend to be dead, tricking the male into leaving them alone. The female dragonflies lay motionless on their back until the males fly away. Scientists witnessed this behavior for the first time while studying dragonflies in the Swiss Alps. The females are vulnerable to harassment when laying their eggs, as they aren't guarded by their male mates. This tactic is likely used only in areas with intense male harassment. The behavior has been observed in other species, but typically for avoiding predators, not suitors. Several animals fake their death as a defense mechanism. This phenomenon is called thanatosis or "apparent death", and it has been observed in opossums, frogs, birds, ants, beetles and several other insect species, protecting them against predators.

THE WOMAN WITH WHOM I SHARE MY HUSBAND

Ocol rejects the old type.
He is in love with a modern woman,
He is in love with a beautiful girl
Who speaks English.
But only recently
We would sit close together, touching each other!
Only recently I would play
On my bow-harp
Singing praises to my beloved.
Only recently he promised
That he trusted me completely.
I used to admire him speaking in English.
[Page 37 ]
Ocol is no longer in love with the old type;
He is in love with a modern girl.
The name of the beautiful one
Is Clementine.
Brother, when you see Clementine!
The beautiful one aspires
To look like a white woman;
Her lips are red-hot
Like glowing charcoal,
She resembles the wild cat
That has dipped its mouth in blood,
Her mouth is like raw yaws
It looks like an open ulcer,
Like the mouth of a field!
Tina dusts powder on her face
And it looks so pale;
She resembles the wizard
Getting ready for the midnight dance.
She dusts the ash-dirt all over her face
And when little sweat
Begins to appear on her body
She looks like the guinea fowl!
The smell of carbolic soap
Makes me sick,
And the smell of powder
Provokes the ghosts in my head;
It is then necessary to fetch a goat
From my mother's brother.
The sacrifice over
The ghost-dance drum must sound
The ghost be laid
And my peace restored.
I do not like dusting myself with powder:
The thing is good on pink skin
Because it is already pale,
But when a black woman has used it
She looks as if she has dysentery;
Tina looks sickly
And she is slow moving,
She is a piteous sight.
Some medicine has eaten up Tina's face;
The skin on her face is gone
And it is all raw and red,
The face of the beautiful one
Is tender like the skin of a newly born baby!
And she believes
That this is beautiful
Because it resembles the face of a white woman!
Her body resembles
The ugly coat of the hyena;
Her neck and arms
Have real human skins!
She looks as if she has been struck..

THE COSTLY TOLL!

A Guide for Everyone🏆

Muguka is a plant that many people in Kenya chew. Some people it helps them feel more alert and awake. However, it has many effects on our health, our families, and our money. Let's explore how chewing Muguka affects parents, families, women, men, and youths in Kenya.

Health Effects
Chewing Muguka has several health impacts:

For Everyone: Chewing Muguka can cause mouth and teeth problems, like gum disease and tooth decay. It can also lead to stomach issues, such as ulcers.

For Men: Some men use Muguka to stay awake for work, but it can lead to addiction, making them need more and more to feel the same effect. It also affects their mental health, causing stress and anxiety.

For Women: Pregnant women who chew Muguka can harm their unborn babies. It can lead to low birth weight and other health issues for the baby.

For Youths: Young people who chew Muguka may have trouble concentrating in school. It can also make them feel tired and lose interest in activities they used to enjoy.

Social Effects
Muguka chewing has significant social consequences:

Families: When a parent or family member spends too much time and money on Muguka, it can create tension and conflict at home. Family members may feel neglected or unsupported.

Communities: Muguka chewing can lead to antisocial behavior. People might spend more time chewing and less time participating in community activities, leading to a breakdown in community bonds.

Youth: Young people who chew Muguka might hang out with the wrong crowd and engage in risky behaviors. This can lead to trouble with the law and poor academic performance.

Economic Effects
The economic impacts of Muguka chewing are also significant:

For Individuals: Spending money on Muguka can strain personal finances. Instead of buying necessities like food or paying for school fees, people might waste their money on Muguka.

For Families: When the family income is used to buy Muguka, there is less money for essential things like healthcare, education, and savings. This can lead to a lower quality of life for the entire family.

For the Community: Widespread Muguka chewing can affect the local economy. People might become less productive at work, reducing overall economic growth and development.

NOW WHAT CAN WE DO?

To address the problems caused by Muguka, we need to take action:

Education: We need to teach people about the harmful effects of Muguka. Schools, communities, and media can play a role in spreading this information.

Support: Provide support for those who want to stop chewing Muguka. This can include counseling and rehabilitation programs.

Alternative Activities: Encourage people, especially the youth, to engage in other activities. Sports, arts, and community projects can provide healthy alternatives to chewing Muguka.

Government Policies: The government can create policies to regulate the sale and use of Muguka. This can include age restrictions and public awareness campaigns.

As you go through life, trying to find happiness and success, be kind and careful. Think about the toes you step on and the hearts you might hurt. Remember to be gentle with others' feelings and be considerate of the tears you might cause. Pay attention to the hard work and sweat of those around you.

You never know what might happen tomorrow. Life is full of surprises and changes. So, it's important to be nice and caring today. Treat others the way you want to be treated, because the future is always a mystery.

Being kind and thoughtful now can make a big difference later. Always remember, kindness goes a long way.

A long-distance truck driver on a lonely road through some hills is flagged down by a young lady who asks for a lift into the next town. The driver gives her a lift but it starts raining heavily as they approach the town where the girl says she lives. When the girl points to her house in one of the streets, the driver stops, and he offers her his raincoat, saying, ‘ I’ll pick it up next time I’m driving through.’ The girl thanks him and disappears into the house.
The next time he is driving through the town the driver stops at the house to pick up his raincoat. At the house he finds only one old woman who assures him no young woman lives there. The driver is puzzled. But just then he looks up at the mantelpiece and sees a photograph. It is the young woman he lent his raincoat to. ‘ But,madam’, he says,’ that’s the young lady.’

‘ That’s, my dear young man ‘, says the old lady sadly ‘was my daughter, and she’s been dead five years now, knocked down by a truck in the hills out there.’
‘ I’m sorry, madam’, says the truck driver. ‘But for a moment I thought I was sure.’
‘If you don’t believe me,’ said the old lady, ‘ I’ll take you down to the cemetery and show you her grave.’ So the old lady and the truck driver go down to the cemetery.

Nzi na Buibui

Nzi na Buibui
Watu wengi ukiwauliza dhana ya neno Maisha hawawezi kueleza Kwa uwazi bila kutoa mifano mengi sana. Ni kweli si jambo rahisi. Wapo wataalamu wengi ambao wameona kuwa Maisha hayana maana Kwa wazo kuwa binadamu anaishi Maisha ya matatizo mengi na maisha aliyopangiwa, hivyo yeye Hana chaguo Kwa lolote linalomfanyikia. Wapo wataalamu wengi ambao wanajipa moyo kupitia Kwa dini. Kuna mambo mengi ambayo yanatufanyikia Maishani ambayo hutuacha tukijiuliza Kwa nini tupitie mambo haya magumu.

Sergio De Mello – True Story

Sergio Vieira de Mello was a Brazilian diplomat who dedicated his life to humanitarian work. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1948 and obtained a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1969. In 1969, he joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and began his career as a humanitarian worker. Over the next few decades, he served in various UN missions around the world, including Bangladesh, Sudan, Kosovo, and East Timor.

De Mello’s most significant mission was in East Timor, where he served as the UN transitional administrator from 1999 to 2002. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in helping East Timor transition to independence from Indonesia. He was widely praised for his leadership and diplomacy in the region.

In 2003, de Mello was appointed as the UN’s Special Representative to Iraq. However, his tenure was short-lived as he was killed in a terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19, 2003. He was 55 years old.

Carolina Larriera was de Mello’s partner at the time of his death. She was born in Argentina in 1965 and obtained a degree in political science from the University of Buenos Aires in 1988. She later worked as an adviser to the Argentinean government and as a consultant for the World Bank. After de Mello’s death, she became a vocal advocate for the rights of victims of terrorism and co-founded the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation in his memory.

The life and work of Sergio Vieira de Mello and Carolina Larriera are a testament to the power of humanitarianism and diplomacy. De Mello’s tireless dedication to improving the lives of refugees and conflict-affected communities around the world was a shining example of leadership and compassion. His tragic death underscores the dangers that humanitarian workers face in carrying out their missions, but also highlights the importance of their work.

Carolina Larriera’s advocacy work after de Mello’s death demonstrates the resilience and determination of those who have been touched by tragedy but continue to fight for a better world. Together, their lives and work serve as a powerful motivation to all of us to strive for peace, justice, and human dignity in our communities and beyond.

You can also watch a movie titled ‘Sergio‘ on Netflix inspired by a book ‘Chasing the Flame‘ , by Samantha Power.

Kubali Jana. Uwepo Leo. Kuwa na Imani na Kesho.

WONDERS WILL NEVER END;

I want to draw your attention to a migratory bird and use it as an example of nature’s greatness- or mystery of nature. many things happen that we just take for granted without a moment’s thought. The story of a bird called the pacific golden plover might open our eyes to something that is impossible to understand and that we can only wonder about.

The pacific golden plover hatches in Alaska near the bering strait, but it overwinters on the island of Hawaii, 4500 kilometres away. After hatching, the birds learn to fly very quickly. Before they fly to Hawaii, they have an enormous appetite and put on 70g of weight in a short time so that they have enough energy for their journey. This increases their body weight by more than 50% and is equivalent to a person weighing 80kg suddenly increasing in weight to 120kg. The birds will fly from Alaska, all the way over the open sea.

So, the pacific golden plover has a long migratory journey from the bering strait to Hawaii. It must fly over water all the way with no chance to stop and rest. How does it find its way?

The pacific golden plover is a terrible swimmer, so it has to stay in the air the whole time. There are no islands in the stretch of water where it can rest. The distance between Nairobi and Ankara, the capital of turkey, is 458km.The journey takes 88 hours and the birds must use their wings without stopping for three days and four nights. It has been estimated that each bird makes250,000 strokes of their wings on their journey. No person could manage to move their arms up and down that many times without stopping!

The pacific golden ploverflies at a constant speed of 51km/hr. scientists have discovered that is the best speed in terms of the most efficient use of birds energy reserves. Higher speeds and lower speed would increase the bird’s energy requirements and it would not have enough reserves to reach Hawaii. The pacific golden plover uses 0.6% of its body weight for every hour it is airborne. That means it uses 82.2g on its journey. So surely it put on too little weight before it left for its long trip? How will it be able to get there? Listen to this: for one reason or another, the pacific golden plover knows it must fly in groups in a V-formation. This way it uses 23% less energy. The strongest bird in the flock flies in front and the other birds constantly swap places with it. The further back in the formation a bird flies, the less energy it uses. Scientists have also discovered that birds that fly in V-formations have sensors that tell them exactly where they should be in relation to neighbouring birds in order to optimize their use of the air waves created by the other birds.

The V-formation
The pacific golden plover gets us to ask more questions; how does it know it must eat in such a way as to put on enough weight to last the whole journey? How does it know it must travel to Hawaii, a place it has never been before?How does it know the way? How does it stay on track despite the wind and weather? What kind of highly-tuned navigational system does it have? The birds have never been to school and learned about flying in V-formation. Who has taught them it is vital to fly in that formation? The answers are obvious—yes , there is only one real answer—the pacific golden plover must have been made that way. There must be an intelligent designer behind it!
